its not the worst thing ever, its not cancer. but I've earned this, through a lifetime of extremely poor dietary and lifestyle decisions, knowing it was in my family.

also being told I'm mildly on the spectrum earlier this year gave some explanation as to my extreme aversion to trying new foods and issues with texture, but I've no choice but to overcome that now.

No you dont

My mmol was over 20, took me 5 months to reverse my type 2

Also got that 'tism, I genuinely recommend seeing specialists who understand food and autism. A therapist, a dietitian, etc. But make sure they ACTUALLY understand things like same food, safe food, and the cravings we have (particularly the need for sugary things because our brains are working on hyperdrive).

It's only after you actually understand the hurdles that you can make a real plan to change something as fundamental as eating. It's hard as fuck, but I know you can do it.

Back in 2016 I thought I had diabetes. Turned out to just be MS, so glad I dodged THAT bullet….wait

Can you join a gym?

We all deserved it, bud... we all did... BUT DAMN THOSE SODA CHOCOLATE PIZZA AND CHIPS DID TASTED GOOD!!!!

A health issue can be preventable, and you still don’t deserve to get it. No one deserves health issues.

Changing diet and habits is hard, try a little at a time if everything at once is too difficult. Go easy on yourself friend.

Keto and intermittent fasting got my A1C down from type 2 diabetes 8.4 to normal 5.3 in 6 months. Low carbs and lower glycemic foods with fasting can definitely help. Lost 63 lbs too. It takes discipline but you can do it!

Nobody deserves it. Don't give up!

Taking responsibility for your health management is important, but please don't blame yourself for developing this condition. The fact that millions of adults have it shows it's not simply personal failure.

Hey. It's not "in my family." And while I never eschewed sugar, I'm neither significantly overweight, nor unhealthy otherwise. But... back in late '19 there I was. Finally at a Primary Care Physician's office looking at a glucose level of 444. I cut out sugar almost entirely (especially "added sugar") my wife went all organic, fresh cooking for herself (which means me too) and I occasionally check my glucose meter. Runs mid-100s unless I just ate. Not the end of the world.

Trick is to have someone who cares about you, help you along.
After my mom died, I've been on my own, and let myself slip badly, to the point I have a wound on my foot that seems to never heal. I'm told if it continues for terribly much longer, they'll just cut it off.

9 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Not your fault, and no, you don't deserve this. Furthermore, covid can trigger diabetes 1, so please be careful and check sugars, because after the honeymoon (who called it that) your body might fully stop producing insulin. Keep checking those sugars.

Start taking sugar out off your diet

9 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

If you cut me I bleed carbonated sugar water. I earned my fat girl diabetes. All we can do is accept responsibility and make the needed changes. I still mostly drink carbonated sugar water (processed sugar gives me life) but I made other conscientious changes along w/meds and my A1C is a 5 and I’ve lost 30 pounds.

9 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

pepsi is a big part of how I got here. I'm surprisingly at peace with drinking zero sugar from here on out

Husband has type 2. Red or baby potatoes are your friend. Potato waffles and wraps over bread, wholemeal if you can stomach it. Look at what you can have instead of what you can't. Mainly, remember to take your medication. Watch out if they give you Metformin. It can interfere with b12 absorption and also have an adverse affect on mental health. The annual check up is not optional.

How would you rate your muscle mass?

9 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

as a certain drill sergeant once put it, a "disgusting fat body"

9 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

That contributes to your insulin resistance. Start building your body up. Glucose is used by your muscles and brain. You can’t get more brain but you can get more muscle.

It is often when we are at our lowest point that we are most receptive to change. I have faith that you can change for the better, random stranger!

Yeah, I was diagnosed myself with Type 2 last year, and in much the same way, I couldn't really be surprised with my diet, lack of exercise, etc.

Cut your portions and eat less junk.

9 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 6

Anything in an ingredients label that ends in "-ose" is sugar( like lactose in dairy products). Also any bread or pasta should be whole wheat.

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oddly, a lot of "whole wheat" and "12 grain" type commercially made breads are loaded down with sugar, moreso than their white-bread counterparts. So eating whole wheat or multigrain bread may not be a win.

9 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I really don’t think that your previous diet brought on diabetes. It’s pretty much genetic. I do miss my daily ice cream.

9 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Type 2 is typically brought on by lifestyle and diet. Type 1 is genetic.

9 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, everybody on my dad's side of the family gets type 2 diabetes, fat, thin, doesn't matter. Lifestyle choices play a part but so does genetics.

9 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Massive hint> "Daily ice cream"

The good thing about Type
II is that if you lose enough weight and change your eating? It’s highly manageable.

9 months ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Second this. Im type 1, but ive known 3 people that have been diagnosed type 2 and reversed it. People can do it in 1-2 years easily now with semaglutide or tirzepatide drugs.

9 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I was originally diagnosed as a type 2, but I'm actually type 1.

I would advise against the mental framing of "having to overcome" food sensory difficulties. You're more likely to run into situations where your mind knows you should eat but your body cant and you'll end up 'beating yourself up' about it. instead try and focus on finding slightly the healthier alternatives to safe foods (and keep those on hand for snacking, which is not a death sentence <3) gl mate

9 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

This is the best advice. It's what I've been telling my son's bf.

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, i have sensory issues with food, dont force yourself, instead try to think of alternatives. I hate flavor and texture of avocado, but if i choose greener ones they are firmer, and if i put them on crunchy tortillas they work so much better to oppose the yucky avocado texture, i can eat them now. Just forcing myself wouldn’t work

9 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I thought I wasn't making terrible food choices but who knew that carbs were so bad for you. Brought it under control with metformin/no sugar/highly reduced carbs. If you can I recommend the Libre 2 sensor, it really helps learning what kind of diet spikes your numbers

9 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Carbs are basically just sugar with extra steps as far as the body is concerned. And not enough people understand that. As the body only gets energy from two things, Fat and Sugar. And Vitamins and Minerals are just needed to keep it in working order. Most people know this stuff, but they don't really take in the information.

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The medical community has been beating the drum for 50 years that "fat is bad for you but carbs are OK". The result was a lot of foods that were advertised as "FAT FREE!" but were loaded down with sugar and then high fructose corn syrup. There are three cheap ways to make food taste good: sugar, fat, and salt, and the medical profession demonized the second two.

9 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's only two ways to fuel the body from food.
Fat or Sugar.
That's it, nothing else will give you energy and keep you alive.
Vitamins and minerals will keep the bodies functions going in a healthy way, but that's not energy.
So if people cut fat from their food, then it needs to be replaced by sugar. If they cut sugar, it needs to be replaced with fat. If you cut both, then it's not food, as it will give you no energy. And salt just makes both taste better.

Ah yes, cannabis, the famous appetite suppressant.

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Explain the munchies i get afterward.

9 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Helped how?

9 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Well the flavors of food really came out after I smoke weed. That and accompanied by the munchies was a great driver of trying new foods with friends.

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

From context, I'm pretty sure they mean "helped me try and enjoy new foods despite texture/familiarity issues."

9 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ah that could make sense. I have only tried weed a few times, decades ago, so I don't remember if it would affect that. Genuinely interested :-)

It's not the end of the world. Tiny octopus has type2 and manages with medication and diet. You're going to have to learn to love veggies and meat and learn that potatoes and rice and traditional noodles are off the table now.

Get a blood testing kit and check your blood sugar in the mornings and an hour after every meal so you get an understanding of your insulin resistance. There are great recipes for low carb dishes that are delicious.

And exercise is your new best friend. Walking, cardio.

9 months ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 5

So many pricks. Someone should invent a transdermal test.

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was hving trouble with controlling blood sugar until got a monitor and did regular checks, lets you adjust your diet as required day to dy and not wait for an HbA1C test

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are you able to have rutabaga? I have learned that they are delicious fried or baked with a sriracha mayo dipping sauce. When I was trying to reduce carbs I feel in love with rutabaga :D

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Welcome to the club! I had to forego the double cheeseburgers and beer, and save all that for about once a month treats. Not a big deal! And I feel so much better!

9 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sensor + app makes monitoring WAAAAAY easier, and will alert you if your sugar is too low.

9 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Tiny octopus' insurance won't pay for a sensor monitor because his diabetes is "under control".

9 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The logic behind that for T2D is mind boggling. Glad you are managing yourself well!

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow that fucking sucks. They seem amazing. So youd have to actually sabotage your health to get that ultra convenient monitor?

9 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same here; I normally can't stand the taste of most vegetables, but I am SO happy that in recent years they've finally made veggie-based 'fake meat' that actually are tasty. I think I like "spicy black bean burgers" more than regular ones anymore.

9 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

YO! First I confess I do love veggies. I ate salad as a kid and didn't mind it at all. Mushy canned veggies NO WAY. Fresh steamed or grilled veggies with seasoning and some EVOO - YES! But I digress. I am also dieting because I like my bourbon and hate working out so in my quest for more veggies I found in the frozen section at Costco these flame grilled vegetable medley bags. onions, squash, mushrooms, zucchini, peppers, with broccoli or brussel sprouts, etc. /1

9 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They have 2 different versions - Primavera and Melange. I make a quick lunch and just heat them up in a skillet on medium heat for 5-7 minutes and add a little dab of stir fry sauce or sriracha and toss in a some cubed chicken chunks or whatever protein you desire. I know rice is probably not an option but I still plate it over half a bowl of the sticky rice (also Costco) and it's only about 350 calories but tastes great. Just an alternative if you're looking for quick and easy. Good luck! /2

The greatest success at hitting my numbers and losing weight has been by replacing unhealthy foods as snacks. Having pickle spears on a break at work or cottage cheese before bed has not ruined my life.

I could never stand grapefruit. why people love it it mystifies me. If someone is making palomas or salty dogs, I'll drink one but never more than one.

Not to mention under- or over-dosing on a lot of medications.

I don't agree with most of your framing ... but I do agree grapefruit is delicious

9 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fruits are fine, but Grapefruits are way too sour.
They aren't liked by people because they are a low tier fruit. There's better fruits people can eat.

9 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I love grapefruit and it makes me sad that it fucks with some of my medications.

9 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Technically it doesn't mess with the meds, it messes with your body so it absorbs more of the meds.
As the body typically never absorbs all the medician in medications, due to the body being inefficient at it. And Grapefruit has an enzyme that helps the body do a better job, which is why some medications can become dangerous if taken together with grapefruit, because it can turn a safe dosage into a less safe dosage.

9 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It goes both ways. Some medications are active until the enzyme breaks them down, others need to be broken down by the enzyme to become active, so by messing with that enzyme you can either get way too much or way too little of a drug, depending on which way it interacts
