Yay me?

I just started a new job last week and the bosses are all super impressed with me even after just a few days. My boss broke one of her rules and had a private conversation yesterday with me about a less-than-stellar employee and said she wished she could replace someone like him with more guys like me. I got a call today asking if I could cover his shifts for the rest of the week because he just got fired.

Hard work pays off, kids.

TL;DR: I'm apparently kicking ass at my new job and now someone else is unemployed.

storytime

Just remember that if the boss is breaking that rule a few days in with you, they're doing it with someone else.

sounds like the old employee got themselves fired and you happened to be available, that's different from getting them fired; not your fault

Just dont do too well or they'll kick you when you have an off day. This way you can rebound on something.

One time the person I was replacing was fired in the same room as me. That was an awkward first shift.

Boss shouldn't be having a conversation with you about another employee, it's unprofessional. You should get her fired too.

Good job bub. More work for same pay. Sounds fun at first, "yay I'm a winner," but gets old pretty fast. Good luck brosef!

It's really very simple. Show up on time. Do what they say. Don't fiddle fuck around. Don't complain. Do the job. Go home.

This victory will be short lived, I guarantee it

Keep in mind once you become "used" to your job after a while, someone new might come in & do the same thing to you.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Be careful of your boss. She's not very professional if she is confiding in a new hire about who is underperforming. Not to be trusted.

Nice.

Get ready for "The Curse Of Competence". Where if you do good work at the beginning they expect more from you later.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well that sounds like a toxic work environment.

Sure thing, Torbjörn.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just don't burn yourself out trying to be the golden child at work. You'll be the first they call but unless you get extra pay be careful.

One job I made the guy training me look really bad on my first day, so much so that he kept complaining about me until I got fired.

Plot twist: OP is a porn star

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Good job. Most people can't do it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cool. Now fuck your boss.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No one wants to put someone out of a job, but it's not your fault they weren't pulling their weight

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

I disagree, there was a few coworkers I'd have put out of a job if I could. They were barely doing anything and management was oblivious.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Your employer just found out that you could do the job. Your reward, more work. I'm sorry @OP. Good luck, though!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In some jobs this is true. In some, the more work you do, the less your coworkers do and noone notices

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you sir are every bosses dream and every fellow employees worse nightmare.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Domestic outsourcing?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I love having good co-workers who do better work than I do. I can learn from them and get better at my job too.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's not your fault someone else sucks.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It is dog eat dog out there.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It is, but please don't feed your dog other dogs.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's a doggy dog world and employees are a diamond dozen. Oh the ironing

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel ya. I start a new job next week, and someone got fired for me to get it. :/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Eh. Sounds like turn n burn to me . Keep an employee for a while give him a raise or two then when he gets too expensive replace him .

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Sounds like maneuvering to me : They hired someone (you) who is ready to do the work of two employees. Use flattery to ask you to do more.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Then fire the one who's doing doing a regular amount of work. I hope I'm wrong.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good for you OP. I started work at a gasstation, and within a month I began receiving 40ish hours and the old night guy was cut to 16

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

^years ago. The morning workers made jokes about how I had basically taken his job

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Past. Everything she knows can be taught to me, but they don't quite trust her- so I got it. Someone quit over me getting it and said (3)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

She was better at the job cuz experience but had apparently expressed displeasure in the form of threatening to quit several times in the(2)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep. Started working at a gas station ~6 months ago, ~3 in I applied for full time and got it over someone who had been there 8 years. (1)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't deserve it because I was new. (4)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good job being bulletproof?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nothing to lose.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Five pints of blood?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So get ready for the soul crush that is "being the guy who works hard" when you get more and more work piled on you because you might do it

9 years ago | Likes 649 Dislikes 7

That's called my childhood

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and everyone around slacking off because they will expect you to pick up on their mistakes/shortcomings

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I learned this the hard way. Sadly hard work doesn't always pay off.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I'm happy for the time being. Hell just yesterday I made $20 more than I would have made working the same hours at my previous job.

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

All about setting expectations. Sprint into a career, marathon to retirement. leave room for improvement, the candle can only burn so long

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

This happened to me. It was "wow look what she can do, let's give her more" until "wow, I think we broke her" . This has been since resolved

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The hardest working mule gets the heaviest load. I know, i'm that jackass.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

No good deed goes unpunished.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He already did, sounds like hes doing the work of two now.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The reward for good work is more work. But that doesn't have to be a bad thing if the work is interesting.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You are a pansy bitch. Do your best. When it gets tough you got to communicate. Put your fear and pride aside.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No good deed goes unpunished.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tru dat 100% "You know how to do this thing better so we really need you to do it." Know why I know how? Because I learned the fucking job.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea. Because showing responsibility is not at all how you get ahead. Do the fucking extra work. It does pay off. Attitude matters, too.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

The only reward for hard work is more hard work. You have to balance that shit. Not lazy, not overachieving.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I alway believed attitude means more than work. Just do what you're asked, get along with people you don't like, dont whine. Theyll love you

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'd like to add don't wander around too much from your station if your job has one

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on the boss really. If you got a great boss, it'll pay off. But if your boss is a massive douche, well, I've seen my friends got 1/x

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Their overtime money got robbed in the daylight by their direct boss by not reporting it in pretext of "less overtime means better 2/x

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Performance" by the main office thus the cunt would get better review.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and no pay increase

9 years ago | Likes 272 Dislikes 1

And then you get shit if you make one little mistake...they seem to instantly forget all the hard work you've done for them

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It's a poor manager who knows which of her employees are reliably competent yet doesn't reward reliable competency. It's a disincentive.

9 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

As a manager, it pains me not to be able to fire the guy who does just enough right to meet our minimum standards.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

well there is a lot of poor managing going around if you hadnt noticed

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

Mines restricted by HR policies :/ but he gets me a few extra percent when bonuses come around so thats cool.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And they question why you seem frustrated when you're really just getting burnt out but still trying to do your job well

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

I was at that point a few months ago. I quit and started contracting for just the technical work at 70% more. A lot happier now.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In that boat right now.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'm slowly approaching that and I'm trying to figure out how to handle it while still doing a good job.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Im looking of chasing a different profession. I dont really feel stimulated at my job anymore.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think that's good. Like you don't feel that sense of fulfillment or motivation anymore so it's time to move on. I'm near there

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly. You start getting slight feelings of bitterness and cynicism and that's not a fun place to be!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My thing is that I try hard because I feel good about producing quality work and I believe it's the right thing for me to give my best
