Mea culpa! I absolutely misread what you wrote! As compensation I will share a tale.
I was in college in TX at the time of her death, and I went to my friend’s dorm room whereupon she asked if I’d heard that Selena was shot. Now, we had another friend on campus named Selena and there was a good minute where I was shocked and afraid and couldn’t figure out why she wasn’t more upset. So when I understood who’d been shot, as shocking as that was it actually came as a bit of a relief to me.
I think you got that backwards. She sang in Spanish but couldn't speak it. This is coming from my very limited knowledge of Selena from watching the movie Selena.
you are correct, like many Mexican-Americans of her generation english was her first language (our parents generation discouraged us of learning Spanish since they received corporal punishment for speaking it here in Texas public schools)
I try to explain this to more recent migrant generations and they look at me in disbelief, I tell them its minor compared to the stories from grandparents and great grandparents generation, they'd lynch or assault you just for being present and brown.

I said this couple of days ago about some Japanese folks singing Bluegrass:
Music isn't a nationality, it's a feeling.

Well, he lived for some time in New York, so I think he might have learned a thing or two of English by now. Amazing singer.

I can sing along with most Rammstein songs. While I took a couple years of German back in high school I can't say I speak it at all.

I don’t think that’s right. She just didn’t sing in English until later on.

Did Selena note the OBGYN for her birth was future politician Ron Paul?

I am not surprised. Everywhere I look in history it is the ruling group trying to make a pure, offten white, culture by any means necessary.

My grandparents got punished for speaking Cajun French in school. So my mom, aunts, and uncles never got to learn it.
