So apparently this social justice warrior @jasondeslin doesn’t believe people are capable of growth or changing their views. They come across as very closed-minded. In their view, anyone who was ever a Republican is permanently labeled a Nazi.
I don’t share my story for praise—I share it to show that people *can* change.
I was raised in a very conservative Christian household where I was told what to think and believe. I grew up hearing that Democrats were destroying America and that being gay was a sin, so yes, I was homophobic. I believed “All Lives Matter” because I didn’t yet understand what “Black Lives Matter” actually meant. I was fed Republican talking points from a young age, so naturally that shaped how I saw the world.
Am I proud of those beliefs now? Of course not.
When I was old enough to vote, I voted for McCain. Looking back, I do wish I had taken the time to educate myself sooner. It wasn’t until I joined the military and got out on my own that I really started thinking independently. As I continued my education, I became more open-minded—but I still didn’t engage much with politics and even stopped voting for a while because I fell into the “both sides are the same” mindset.
Over time, though, my perspective kept evolving. I started questioning everything. I eventually walked away from religion because it no longer made sense to me. I became supportive of people living their lives how they choose and grew to be pro-choice.
Then Trump emerged, and that’s when things really clicked for me. Seeing how people rallied behind him despite his behavior made me take a harder look at everything. I’ll admit, I didn’t know enough at first and still didn’t vote when I should have. That’s on me. But I did learn, I did change—and I made sure to show up and vote against him.
People can grow. People can change. Writing them off forever only ignores that reality.
May get downvoted to hell but despite being a liberal, this kind of behavior is toxic and I do consider myself liberal because of what I now believe.
TLDR: Justice warrior doesn’t think people can change.
This is just my story of how I was once a republican but completely changed my view.
Edit: looks like keyboard warrior tried to comment but was unable to as his comments do not appear. Guess I have a stalker now. Keep trying because I don’t have anything to prove to anyone but will continue fighting fascism and this toxic mindset. I’m proud I voted Democrat and even if toxic people like this don’t think people can change then that’s their problem. Doesn’t excuse my mindset in the past but I know I’m doing the right thing now. And stop using autism as an excuse to justify your shitty behavior. I’m also on the spectrum but choose to hear people’s mindsets to better understand.

My mother was a "knee-jerk" Democrat, and I finally understood what she was talking about by the time I was 18 years old.

I have NEVER voted for a Republican, in any local, state-wide, or federal race. I've been a good Democrat for 40+ years in Texas.

They just want to lash out anonymously on the internet. No real interest in common grounds or changing minds.

Their mindset is almost as bad as a maga. Nothing is worse than a Nazi but Nazis have closed minds and this guy definitely seems to as well

A lot of people have been angrier (rightfully so) at the state of the world since he was elected. That anger has had very few options for release for an extended period of time. And we have too often seen someone claim to be improving themselves or learning from their mistakes, only to turn around and maintain the status quo when it suits them. Trust has been shattered, trust that took generations to build. I hope you continue on your journey of self improvement. But trust is not guaranteed.

That’s understandable. I was angry when he got elected again because I knew how things would turn out. I went off on family and people I knew that stuck by him.
