I've been having a hard time lately. Depression, schoolwork piling up, money troubles, and to top it all off, I have COVID, so I had to cancel my anniversary dinner with my girlfriend.
I met her a year ago today. We went on an amazing date after talking online for a week or so. She's been my best friend ever since, and I never thought I'd ever love someone this much.
I was going to propose to her at dinner, but since we're quarantined, I just decided to drop down on my knee while she was on the couch, and I popped the question.

Engaged =/= married. They can stay engaged for a long time. I proposed to my wife after 3 months of dating while I was still in high school. We were engaged for 2.5 years. Just had our 24th wedding anniversary.

I was engaged 3 years because for some silly reason my wife's father wanted her to graduate college first and it made no difference to us. Will have been married 39 years next feb.

Engaged does equal getting ready for marriage and even remotely thinking about marriage or any kind of extreme commitment within a year of meeting someone (on top of all the other stuff OP is currently dealing with) is just ill advised for multiple reasons. Guy needs to get his life in order first and actually really get to know the girl before all that, otherwise it could and most likely will end in a total dumpster fire and possibly ruin his life if he rushes everything and it all goes south.
