I know Artemis II is not landing on the moon, but this whole mission is reminding me of this.

I always liked this one. It conjures up images of astronauts fighting moon ghosts, and there's just something majestic about that.

Apollo 18?

I love the humor, but a conventional firearm won't discharge on the moon.

And now I've given someone the idea for making moon-guns, which I suspect have been designed already by one or more governments.

Not likely what you envisioned, but your comment reminded me that Verne guns are a thing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_gun

It doesn't even matter; since when can you shoot ghosts?

Rock shot and goofer dust loaded into shotgun shells. Winchester brothers taught me that.

Or depleted uranium, if you listen to Dresden

Why would a conventional firearm not discharge on the moon?

Also the vacuum of space could cause lubricants to evaporate, so the mechanics could theoretically cold-weld together leading to jams. Changes in gravity & propellant could be an issue, as is the lack of O2.

Originally it was because oxygen was needed for the explosion for the ammo to fire I believe, but I think modern ammunition contains their own oxidizers allowing ignition, but it’s never been attempted to my knowledge.
