awesome

I hope they remake a movie like The Right Stuff to include the space race of the 90s onward.

A life sacrificed on the altar of human achievement is a loss borne by all. Thoughts and prayers to the families of these brave individuals

I wish this was on the front page. I just spent an hour pretty much bawling my eyes out. :(

Damn it.

Considering the odd design, it's a wonder it got off the ground at all.

It's been going to space just fine for ten years.

I didn't downvote, but I've seen about 10 other posts on it... :(

They're tweeting about it, though conservatively (CHiP reported the death).

Who the fuck posts a dead guy like this? Would you like your death shared in such a manner?

There's no "dead guy" in the picture. It's called news.

Yes, I know, he's out of the frame in a different piece of the wreckage. I can read the news. This is morbid sensationalist infotainment.

Two space-based failures in one week..... damn.

Well, unmanned payloads are lost from time to time (satellites mostly). Bigger bummer in this one. ):

It's almost like it's difficult to do... What the hell is wrong with these cracker jack engineers?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, no kidding. Just get your TI-83 Plus out and use the freaking buttons, engineers!

But in all seriousness, Orbital Science's failure didn't come as a surprise to me. They're using modified NK-33s, which were N-1's* engines.

*all 4 of the N-1 flights ended with explosions, shortly after launch.

Took the words right out of my mouth, man. I mean, why not shift the game forward and bring in some N-1.5's*, ya know?

Or, buy SpaceX's Merlin 1-Ds, which offer higher thrust:weight ratios, in a smaller package, with a (MUCH) better track record.
