Day # whatever of me trying to change people’s minds about spiders

Apr 10, 2026 9:31 PM

This is Yellowjacket and she is a grade A goofball. I usually find her playing and exploring in her enclosure; she rarely sits still! See how dark and shiny her head and legs are? That’s because she’s rubbed off some of her setae, or sensitive hairs. But have no fear! This video was taken right before her big girl molt :) She now has a beautiful weave back in place

Yellowjacket is part of a national breeding project to make her species, Hyllus diardi, more readily available in the pet trade so we can avoid taking them from the wild for the pet trade! H. diardi are my absolute favorite species to work with, so I’m honored to be part of the project! I’ll introduce my other mamas soon :)

Please remember that Yellowjacket is a pet and part of an amazing breeding effort that a lot of people are working so hard on! She’s an ambassador animal, NOT a pest!! Keep all nasty or violent comments to yourself and simply scroll past. Thank you! :)

She’s like if Big Bird was a spider.

I invite you to come my page with an open mind! I post silly, educational, approachable content about jumping spiders. There’s no jump scares or feeding without a still picture and warning first. I aim to show people that spiders are sooo much more than their misconceptions 🕷️ Jumping spiders are a great “gateway bug” because of their fuzz and large, forward facing eyes. If you give it a chance, you might learn a little something & maybe even change your mind ;)

She is very happy in this video!

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Her color and markings are really pretty.

20 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you! You’ll have to come back for the updated photo shoot- she’s sooo much cuter with all her “hair”!

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Energetic Goldilocks. Looks pretty tho, I like the black and gold color scheme a lot.

20 hours ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She’s even prettier post molt! I’ll try to get some good footage to show off her new fit

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

She wants uppies!

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She’d had enough of uppies, at least on my hand! Lol. We were doing choice-based handling (I captured that on video! Yay!) and she had noped off my hand a few minutes before

18 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Haha nice. Gotta thank you for your posts. I’ve had bad arachnophobia all my life. I’ve always respected what they do, though. You’ve really helped me see how cute they can be!

I love Yellowjacket! <3

She’s SUPER yellow now!!

BIG PERSONALITY!

22 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OMG YES. Yellowjacket is something else… her personality changed as much as her fit and she’s a sorority girl on adderall now. Not my fave

I had a spider crawl into my ear while I was asleep back in 2021. Waking up to that clicking, ticking inside my head, my wife thinking I’m having a stroke as I clawed at my head, and having to get it out in the middle of the night will haunt me forever. My mind is uh… pretty well made up on spiders

I’ll take ‘things that never happened’ for $600, Ken.

19 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Unfortunately, this is a true story. It was tremendously unpleasant. I don’t understand why the knee jerk reaction was that it couldn’t possibly happen?

18 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It really did happen. I’m his wife. He about gave me a heart attack when it happened. We just moved into our house and we were finding about 15-20 spiders a day. I didn’t believe him at first until he showed me the dead spider on his finger.

How bad is it to rub them off?

21 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So she was imported, and probably rubbed off a lot of her setae on the paper towels etc used to cushion her while being shipped. It’s pretty common. Once a female is mature, she usually starts to very slowly go bald; it’s typically worse and faster if they’re breeding moms

We have no idea why that is, but we’re trying to figure it out!

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That is very strange they all go bald but if it is normal? At least they are okay and not stressed!

17 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I sincerely hope they can understand the concept of fun, and that theyre having a lot of it when exploring etc.

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I genuinely think they do understand the concept of play and fun as they’ll pounce on dust bunnies, bat down their excess webbing like a cat, and genuinely explore and observe what’s going on around them! They also all have a very unique personality ranging from super sweet to very energetic to literally snuggly. Jumpers are amazing creatures!

She's absolutely gorgeous! Can't wait to see her in her new finery! <3

23 hours ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

She is soooo yellow now!

Unfortunately her personality changed as much as her outfit. She went from sweet but cautious to fuckin methhead. Not my favorite

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Once again, I'm reminded of the character Kath Amalthova, in the novel _Seveneves,_ whose sub-race of humans is subject to epigenetic shifts that profoundly affect both the physical and psychological dimensions of the individual. Can't help wondering if the author was thinking of spiders molting.

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ohhh I have 4 books on my TBR but I might have to add this! It sounds hella interesting

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Only novel I've read that's divided into two parts by a page that says simply, "Three Thousand Years Later. . . ."

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Interesting! Have you read Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky?

18 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What is their life span?

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Females up to 3.5 years, males up to 2.5 years. Significantly less than a tarantula, but longer than the average jumping spider. However, this is an advanced species to keep as they need veryyy specialized husbandry and set-up

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Wasn't planning on getting one, just was surprised there was any pet trade involving them since, to my knowledge, jumping spiders did not live long.

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry, I was just giving extra info and context because I have a touch of the tism and do that sort of thing lol

In the grand scheme of pets, no, jumping spiders don’t live very long- 3 years is a good age for a jumper. However, just because something doesn’t live very long doesn’t mean it doesn’t leave a big imprint on your life 🖤 Jumping spiders are actually exploding in popularity in the pet trade!

19 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No need to be sorry!

18 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I see the waving arms and all I can hear is "uppies".

23 hours ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

She was kind of asking for uppies! we were doing choice-based handling and she did let me hold her a few times

Then she molted and now has the personality of a caged crackhead

19 hours ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

That makes them crazy?

19 hours ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Molting can drastically change a spider’s personality- sometimes for the better andddd sometimes for the worst. She is incredibly jumping and hard to handle now

18 hours ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Will that settle eventually?
