This makes me sad since I know I'll never be able to provide as much comfort to victimized people as this cat can.

Just place yourself in their laps and purr.

I'm in an abusive relationship with my youngest cat. She shows love to lure me in, then BAM, scratches to hide from my friends.

But really, what more could you ask for? 🥰 your cat sounds lovely. They can abuse me any day.

Looks cute, but is not.

Cats are serious about their boundaries and a lot of people who hate cats seem to not understand that. Could this be why they connect with the cat so well? Boundaries are a serious topic for both parties?

Insightful question. My initial reaction is to doubt it, since both parties tend toward exclusionary boundaries, but a mutual respect for boundaries could lead to that exclusion being quickly overcome.

That and it's just a really, really good kitty

People love dogs because the dogs generally worship you wholesale. People love cats because when a cat bonds with you, it's 100% the cat's choice. And it feels special to be included in that kind of trust.

Having a cat that has been traumatized, shy, scared, afraid go from hiding, hissing to trusting you whether it's over days, weeks, months or even years is unlike anything I've ever experienced. My 1st foster fail was 12 weeks having been born outside she had no contact with humans until she came to me, she didn't like being picked up, after months she let me pet her for the 1st time. Fast forward 8 years she sat on my lap twice this summer and will sit on the couch with me most nights.

If someone tells me they don't like cats it's a red flag to me they have boundary issues, trust issues, or are impatient.

Do people not have trust issues? That sounds like a red flag to me.

yep. i adopted 3 cats (my old girl died, and went to adopt a new one a year later, well she was one of a bonded trio, so + 3 cats. took a month or two to bond with the one i initially chose. the other took longer. the third, well it’s been almost 2 years and the third one finally comes up to me for pets but won’t let me pick him up and hold him yet. but slow steady progress with him and he’s learning to trust. just today for the first time, he climbed on my chair’s footrest while i was>

sitting in it. which is huge progress for him!

When I bought my house I realized I needed company. 3br all to myself, I adopted a 6 yr old girl from humane league. Asked them “what cat has been here the longest?” And it ended up being this cat that had been owned by an old person that needed to go to a home but could not bring their cat. The cat was very stand-off-ish, independent, and would not let anyone pet her. It’s been 5 years and She still won’t let me pick her up, won’t sit on my lap or walk on me but she does snuggle up to me and

Enjoys a good session of hard scritches and has, since adoption, evolved her language into about 4 or 5 different meows (mows) to tell me she’s happy. She only just started letting my kid pet her this year (kid is 11)

More likely if they have cats they are inpatients! https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38041862/

How dare you post an actual source from a published article in a reputable journal! Especially one that doesn't explicitly agree with the un-sourced (or at least not cited) opinion in this thread that anyone who doesn't like cats is an abusive prick!

And it was a pretty good joke on the OPs phrasing.. oh well.. you dont win em all

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure a lot of people probably read it as "impatient" juat glancing over it and didn't think about it any more than that. I almost did the same, didn't even notice the link until I looked closer and realised it said "inpatients"
