We’re living in 2017 while these guys are living in... ahh, forget it.
NRXNext
Here we go killing again.
XenomorphZZ
What's its fucking range?
cuntybumsox
top speed 300km/h, ok, lets see the transition.
Dometheus
and when they fall from the sky................
FlyNaked
Ummmm.... Ducted fan. NOT a jet. And how long does it take to recharge?
RaptaGzus
"air taxi for up to 5 people." lol just waiting for the kickstarter campaign for it.
RayLynch
All for the low, low price of YOU'LL NEVER AFFORD IT.
krishwedds
Jets have multiple types, EDFs are not included. It typically requires a sort of Venturi that increases velocity
Nightcaste
I'm going to need several bananas here.
jarsoffarts
The fact that they were so thrilled it even lifted, does not instill a lot of confidence in me
hotLipsMilo
Banana for scale?
DC1888
Looks a bit like the ships from the old TV mini-series "V".
JackBurtonME
It looks like the shuttle from V. +1
AkridCascade
One flight closer to Nexus.
UnemployedReceptionist
I'm so happy because tod... oh, it didn't say lithium... my bad.
kashmoney02
So it's got a bunch of those Dyson air-blades on the wings instead of in the bathroom... BenderNeat.gif
BillyBurnesMcGurne
I think "Jet" here is a misnomer. I jet is essentially a rocket that gets it's oxidizer from outside of the aircraft.
Jjfirefly
It's basically a drone that you could sit in, not a jet. It doesn't look very fast either from the video.
asteroidcomplex
uhh HELL YES!
Isaypoopythingsbecausemostofyouannoyme
With 300km distance, I'm going to say about 80% of this things weight is in batteries
TheAnswerWasAlwaysMoreLube
And that is with no passengers.
nardokor
Got bored and did the math when this first went around. Batteries would be 1200-1500 pounds alone.
Sansdurlannite
The "jet" in the video doesn't have a pilot in it. Right now, it's still just a big RC quadcopter.
potatoardvarkhybrid
^this
helpusdrzaius
Shouldn't have a pilot in it. We ain't going to get Back to the Future or Fifth Element shit if the vehicles are driven by people.
Sansdurlannite
Let's call it a passenger then.
perverteddouchbag
Wouldn't it nose dive the second you lose power with the wings that far back? Especially with an american flying huehuehue
baldewok
American models will have the wings at the front.
YouCantHaveMyHouse
By design, yes it would. It has no control surfaces beyond the motors. Without power, no control at all.
OfficialBenderRodriguez
Much like, say, a helicopter?
Mavgurian
The falling of a helicopter makes its rotor keep spinning. It can only go down at that point, but the fall is controlled, part of training.
TheLastSouthernGentleman
As long as the rotor is spinning you can control a helicopter without power. Just not a lot of say in where you're going to land
TheBlueMuppet
You have more say in where than when, though.
YouCantHaveMyHouse
Helicopter has plenty of control after losing power. Landing is safely performed given they have enough altitude and airspeed to find a spot
vkjk860
Probably cost less than the Obama motors "Volt"
dietderpsy
Flying cars will make it easier to get to work, that is until everyone has flying cars.
TooFewGuitars
But the bad drivers won't last long
Nuttsy
Neither will everyone under them.
Automatvapen
People can't handle driving in a parking lot. How the hell would people be able to drive in three dimensions :P
ej255
No jet fuel, not a jet. Electric airplane is cool though.
LTR2009
Just a bunch of hairdryers strapped to a long-ez
JohnnySandwich
Rutan is rolling in his grave after that comment. And I'm not even sure he's dead.
Cazador115
It's the engine that defines it not the fuel type
ej255
If it was using an electric drive to mix particles of fuel with compressed air before igniting them, then it's a jet, otherwise its a fan
M0buis2
We can be pretty sure its not using a jet engine, you know, being electric and all
RedIronCrown
"Jet" includes more than turbines. Rockets and water jets are jets, too.
st1uc1f3r
Yea but shrouded fans are not jets. Lilium is just using it as marketing buzz.
Cazador115
https://lilium.com/technology/ from what it says here, it's a jet engine, but the intake fan is powered by an electrical motor rather 1/2
Cazador115
then a gas turbine 2/2
st1uc1f3r
Yea that's a fancy way of saying it's a shrouded prop with no turbine at all. If there's no combustion, it doesn't need to pull energy ...
photog
Yeah but does it fast charge with USB-C?
MmmmmmDonuts
Does it have 3G LTE?
ohDannyBoi
3G? Dude come on...if you're going to joke at least make it realistic and relevant
MultiplePersonalitiesProfile
Asking the real questions.
MetaSomma
No because you don't have any USB-C ports so you need an adapter anyways
AnalSexInTheWoodsDontMakeBabies
Epandable storage?
neoevolution
What about the audio system?
bretticusbrettilicious
Does it have a fingerprint scanner?
JamiesEPIRB
Only on the floor models.
LTR2009
6 hours of charging, 10 minutes of flight time.
littlegoblin
How many apps can it have?
wasting2muchtime
What about the headphone jack?
hsindi91
Dongles are where its at
spoodermon
they didnt have any space to fit it in - apple
kevinallover
It's becoming an epidemic. Even Google now.
GraphicsInterchangeFormat
Hahahahahahahahaha and people said nobody would be so stupid to repeat it. Headphone jacks are fossils. Replace them with something better.
kevinallover
Next you're gonna tell me AC power has been around too long...
thelaaaaaw
what? which model?
kevinallover
Pixel 2
JohnnySandwich
The aeronautical scientist in me says "that's not a jet".
[deleted]
[deleted]
JohnnySandwich
That's not jet propulsion though, it's fans. Jets use combustion to accellerate air, turning fans. These are using electric motors to turn.
Ilikegiraffesandfood
The internet scientist in me says, "you're not a sandwich."
DubhIainn
My thoughts exactly. It's somewhat sad that the people making the thing don't use proper terminology. Anyway, it's cool nonetheless! :)

Jet just means it produces thrust by moving a fluid, it has nothing to do with the means to move the fluid
Mavgurian
"Budditsmovinair!!"
cptwott
no. multirotor, at best.
AwkwardKeming
Jet engine: an engine that produces motion as a result of the rearward discharge of a jet of fluid; specifically :an airplane engine (1/2)
AwkwardKeming
(2/2) that uses atmospheric oxygen to burn fuel and produces a rearward discharge of heated air and exhaust gases. - Merriam Webster
AwkwardKeming
So, maybe it's a "jet" engine but not a "jet engine".
throughthoughtthough
Ducted fan is the term you are looking for.
DoktorLurker
So long as it sucks, squeezes, bangs and blows right?
thatlamer
Kind of hard to pull off the "bang" part with all electric, unless you're looking to have it fall out of the sky on fire due to a short.
boneh3ad
So does the engine in a lawnmower, but I wouldn't call that a jet.
TheAnswerWasAlwaysMoreLube
I will now.
FortressCraft
That's a 2-stroke tho, not an Otto cycle; does that still SSBB?
FlyNaked
intermittent combustion (piston) vs continuous combustion (jet)
DoktorLurker
Different combustion. Unless you've got Tim Allen's lawn mower because I think that one IS a jet...
Squagglenater
Its all about thrust my friend
Dukeboysz
No bang, EDF or electric ducted fans. They suck, squeeze a little bit but that duct improves the fans performance more so than compression.
baldewok
Jets of air come out of the ducted fans, is a jet.
Isaypoopythingsbecausemostofyouannoyme
I have a hose with sprayer that has a Jet function..... Jet water hose
Cazador115
Yes, it is when that setting is on. The compression of the water increases the pressure and causes thrust when released.
Pilotdog68
burtonvelocity
It has jet engines. Just electric versions instead of fuel. And it looks like it has several dozen small ones working in parallel.
MrBananaBeak
No, it uses electric motors. Engines use combustion.
burtonvelocity
It's their choice of words on their website. https://lilium.com/technology/
MrBananaBeak
That's nice. They didn't invent engines though.
Cazador115
Neither did ford when he built the car
Voxnobilus
The problem is this doesn't meet definition of a jet a jet involves exploding fuel these are highly Advanced propellers
Cazador115
Not necessarily. As I understand it, the engine compressing the air could propel it, but at much lower speeds the a commercial jet (1/2)
Cazador115
Which uses the burning of the fuel to increase speed. This info is from a 20 min google session so im not sure how accurate it is (2/2)
getmo
For jet engines to work they require combustion fuel. This is an example of a electric propeller with ducted fans. Very different.
uzerok
Jet propulsion is a bit looser defined. Think of something like a 'jet ski' or how cephalopods move around under water.
getmo
True, but usually that means including rocket motors a la Jet Propulsion Laboratory. 'Jet' commonly refers to jet engines, not propellers
Cazador115
But it doesn't use propellers, it's compressed air that gives it thrust. The fans are for air intake
