#1 Poor eyesight probably wasn’t an issue in the past because primitive humans with bad vision didn’t survive. “Why is everyone running?” *squinting* “Is that a tiger?”

My roommate and I just spend a lot of time on Wikipedia reading up on the different types of skunks and going back up the family tree because of the "fart squirrel" picture. All the things called skunks are in the Americas, but there are two species of stink badger in Indonesia and the Philippines. Also, the are in the "dog-like" super-order. Also, if I understand the family tree, they likely differentiated before raccoons, weasels, and red pandas.

Fucking 💯 correct. As a kid I would have failed school.. or been estnyby tigers..you know, whichever. And now I am here again, not just with astigmatism but with a cataract. Nature trying /hard/ to select me....

#1: Most people back then are so lacking in proteins that they have night blindless anyways.

#2 Someone ELI5 why a comment I made about a photo of a pretty lady taken from behind was removed by the mods, and this supremely weaksauce justification given when I challenged the removal? My comment was simply "Rear view is nice enough." I get the feeling that Imgur's "community standards" are randomly and inconsistency applied.

does anyone know the word is ho, not hoe?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#31 is this a mugshot? Is it illegal to chase people off your property while naked and screaming?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm guessing there was more to the story we don't know about.

#1 nearsighted people who couldn't see very far were often employed by people needing close sight mechanics such as building chainmail or threading needles for sewing, as often far sighted people were not as good close range as the nearsighted were

2 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

Ohh, that makes me feel better about my nearsightedness - I love doing stuff like that. I've even tried making chainmaille.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I've read that nearsightedness wasn't evolution'd away because they couldn't hunt worth shit and stayed in the tribe while the hunters were away and simply fucked the time away...

#1 I think glasses or no glasses seeing at night is difficult

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Blue eyed people have slightly better night vision, and brown eyes are less sensitive to bright sunlight. That's all I've heard about eyes and evolution.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have blue eyes so does my mother. She refuses to drive at night

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, regardless of their visual acuity people do tend to have difficulty seeing with their eyes closed.

#25 Now I want one that says “You’re the reason doves cry”

#30 Could someone please explain? I fear it is a language barrier for me but i do not get it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think it's referencing that while developing a fetus goes through a stage where it has a protocloaca and is described as being phenotypically female. Meaning it looks female.
(Fun fact, it also develops gills at one point!)

Another guess could be that they're suggesting that the underutilized egg lacks a Y chromosome and is therefore "female".

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*unfertilized

underutilized is an interesting autocorrect. I mean, maybe, but not how I'd like to be talking about it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for the thorough explanation! I learnt something new today.

Fun fact. I used to be a registered polysomographic technologist. ;)

Goddammit. Even I spelled it wrong. POLYSOMNOGRAPHIC.

I've actually taken a lot of comfort in learning about the roles people like me (bipolar 1 baby!) have taken in society through the ages. People with weird brains are super important to our survival and development! I take my meds & do the things, but it helps to reframe the way I think about it.

I know ADHD has always been pretty important because they can multitask and autism helps focus and not to take things personally when you need that focus...like Alan Turing in WW2

That's the modem. Not the router.

2 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 6

All the better

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Modem is a holdover from the days of dialup. There's very little modulating happening and its usually just a router.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

It's not just a modem (media adapter) because it has a single WAN port, but multiple LAN ports. It's a modem-router, ergo a router.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Not really; a "media adapter" is called a bridge. A modem is used to convert digital datastreams to a modulated analog signal. This is no longer what is happening in modern day. This device bridges between ethernet and (presumably) PTSN, and routes it to 4 ethernet ports. Ergo this would officially be called a brouter or bridge router. But frankly, nobody cares about terminology any more these days. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_router

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

To clarify; it only uses PTSN as physical medium, it does not adhere to the signaling part of telephony.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everyone is trying so hard on this one, it’s making me cry.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Without looking up that particular model, it's pretty common for home internet connections to use a combo unit. Most families don't bother setting up a router separate from their modem because they don't nmeed to. Hell, my gigabit fiber has a combo unit that I use as my router because it lets me do everything I need and the built-in WiFi has enough range to reach the end of my block.

The real problem is they left a moody teenager at home with the house to themselves and nothing to keep them occupied.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Oh no! It might develop a personality, or, heavens forbid, even read a book!

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Or, more likely, find worse ways to get into trouble.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If taking away the internet was that much of a blow then the kid is probably a nerd. I wouldn't be too worried.
