Where is “ Carroll”?

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Dark side of the moon is the best album ever released

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Isn't that where the secret base is?

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They should stop and go swimming in that lake

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I dont see a desepticon ship...

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hate to be that guy, but this isn’t “the far side of the Moon.” The Moon is currently waning gibbous, and the near side is 77% illuminated. That means 3/4 of that planet mage is of the side we see. Still cool as hell, but the media calling it the far side are simply wrong. One story was correct in that it said astronauts get first glimpse of far side. Much better than sensationalizing a picture that’s impressive enough as is.

Is this the great gig in the sky I keep hearing about?

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Fake. There is no space nazi base

/S

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Since the Moon was 73% illuminated as seen from Earth last night, this does not seem to be the far side of the Moon as photographes by Artemis II astronauts.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There aren't any mare on the far side...

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The coolest thing about this mission is that the video and photography is going to be SO MUCH BETTER.

4 days ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I can't figure out why there aren't more cameras on the outside of the ship. No eclipse yesterday as it happened. Taking turns at the window

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All those years they told us it wasn't actually the dark side, they were lying!

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Dark" refers to unknown, or the concept of being "unilluminated by our sight"

What kind of person downvotes cheese?

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What a joke. The moon is flat.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You believe in the moon?

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes - it hangs from the giant colander that makes the stars. Duh

2 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

looks like Pluto or Ceres

4 days ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

Moon has dark mare and no visible ice.

Pluto is a different colour and has those flat icy planes.

Ceres looks closer to moon than Pluto. But Ceres doesn't have any mare, the craters look larger (since Ceres is smaller) and it has those shiny patches of ice from the cryovolcanos.

If anything, I'd say the far side of the moon looks closer to Mercury (so long as you look at it from the side that doesn't have the spider on it)

4 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The…The spider on it?! 😳

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You know you’re never more than six feet from a spider. *Never*. Not even on mercury.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and the chances of getting bitten and dying from that spider are low, but never zero

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm seeing green blue brown...

4 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Yep, the moon has a lot more colour than we can see from Earth because the reflection blows out all of it.
And it requires a good camera to actually pick it up even when in orbit.

4 days ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Where can I learn more about the moon's colors? I'm very excited to learn it has colors.

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This has also been "color enhanced" to better show the topography and/or mineral make-up of the areas (saw a couple out there, not sure which this is)

3 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It does have those colours, but yeah the saturation has been boosted.
Because cameras really struggle to capture them without the right conditions.
They are just not as reflective as the less colourful regolith. Which results in them not showing up as well and getting washed out.

Looks like our lil cheese fren up there took a pretty big bullet for us. All this time I had assumed the moon was kind of a pussy. Feel bad now.

4 days ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Isnt the moon made out of a piece of primitive Earth hit by a meteor or something like that? Need to go research whether i dreamed that

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thought I was pretty clear it's shot up pussy cheese, not sure if your views about meteor dreams are getting the way of common sense, or

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

the prevailing theory is that proto earth and another proto planet collided at just the right angle for most of both to merge while ejecting

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

a fraction into orbit around the combined proto planet that condensed and coalessed into the moon, yes.

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not the full far side. Orientale Basin, the big round thing can actually be seen from Earth at times. What you have is part of the far side and part of the near side.

This is the actual far side of the Moon

The mare (the dark patches) are on the near side of the Moon, and can easily be seen from Earth. The big part is most likely Oceanus Procellarum which is seen on the left side of the Moon from the northern hemisphere of Earth

4 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

The crew was geeking out about lunar geology today.

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was really fun to watch them get all excited

"There's no stars"

To properly expose the sunlit landscape, astronauts used fast shutter speeds ( ~ 1/250th of a second) and small apertures, which do not allow enough time for the faint light of distant stars to register on the film or sensor.

While the sky appears black in space due to the lack of atmospheric scattering, the intense sunlight reflecting off the Moon's surface, creates a high-contrast environment that washes out the dim stars.

4 days ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Fuck the stars, I wanna know why it looks so discolored at the top. Are those deeper craters or something?

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The brown areas come from iron oxide (rust), the dark blue comes from titanium deposits and volcanic rock.

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Awesome.

2 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's the Moon's ocean. We've been lied to all this time. There's water on the moon. Jk, yes, it's just craters from repeated impacts. The moon is our shield against the asteroid belt.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks like there's some text on the lower-left.

4 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I was trying to be funny back then, and write "Cheeese!". But nobody could see it from our side. Looks like time got rid of it... would have been hilarious...

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it says "Kilroy was here"

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The answer was there the whole time. It was just facing away from us.

Its either "Made in China" or a Prop65 warning, damn Californians...

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why is the north so much smoother than the south?

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have you tried waxing your own butt-hole?

4 days ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

mare. at some point in the past, but more recent than the moons early days, massive lava flows covered large portions of the moon with new

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

darker colored crust that ancient humans called mare because they thought they were seas on the moon. the new crust has had less time to be

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

bombarded and would have in its formation filled in much of the cratering that was there prior making compartively more smooth.

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Plus, with neither wind nor water, the dusty lunar regolith doesn’t get redistributed across the surface.

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

wait, this doesn't sync up with the wizard of oz?!?!

4 days ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 3

That's because that was a long time ago, things have chanced on the moon since then.

4 days ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I get the joke, but: Echoes syncs up with the end of 2001
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSOnYrF_Qgo

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For generous meanings of "sync", but sure. Hadn't seen that pairing before.

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The backside of the moon has a butt hole.

Dark side of the taint.

It's not dark at all. Pink Floyd lied to us.

4 days ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 2

They had their flash on when taking the pic

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At least, everything under the sun is in tune

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No they didnt, its a new moon.

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If that is the dark side of the moon, that camera has a hell of a flash

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ironically, the near side has lower average reflectivity, and so is technically darker than the far side. We’ve been looking at the dark side all along.

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also, the far side technically gets more sunlight than the side facing us, since "our" side gets dark during a lunar eclipse, the far side doesn't.

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

By "dark" they meant that it tells really off color jokes.

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it is dark as in 'the unseen' or 'the unseeable' not dark as in 'no light'

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They were talking about all the crimes the moon committed

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Radio dark.

4 days ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Thank You.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The dark side of the moon is called that because it was for so long a mystery. It may be illuminated but WE were in the dark.

4 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Dark side of the Earth?

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Like how the dark ages weren't literally dark, but literacy rates were so low that there aren't many surviving historical records from that time.

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly!!

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the far side of the moon, not the dark side of the moon. I know I tend to wrongly associate the two, but then I think about the Futurama episode where they're on the moon, trying to outrun the encroaching darkness

4 days ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

In reality, this is mostly the near side of the moon, which, by albedo, is darker than the far side. So it is the dark side and not (much of) the far side.

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The far side of the moon is called the dark side of the moon. Not because it is always dark, but because we were in the dark about it. Even when we sent people originally they could not transmit from that side, leaving it in "the dark". Fun hey?

4 days ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Insightful! Thanks for learning me something new.

4 days ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

There is no dark side of the moon really, matter of fact, it's all dark.

4 days ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

I dont know, I was really drunk at the time.

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ironically, this statement is true. the moon is one of the darkest objects in the solar system.

4 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As in light it gives off internally? Or what? Cos it has super high albedo

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

its albedo is ~12%. most of the moon is dark gray.

4 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ack, lower down I corrected

4 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think it’s more about how reflective it is.

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's albedo. Either way not sure how it's the darkest, unless other celestial bodies have even higher albedo

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
