I hate to be that guy, but this isn’t “the far side of the Moon.” The Moon is currently waning gibbous, and the near side is 77% illuminated. That means 3/4 of that planet mage is of the side we see. Still cool as hell, but the media calling it the far side are simply wrong. One story was correct in that it said astronauts get first glimpse of far side. Much better than sensationalizing a picture that’s impressive enough as is.
Since the Moon was 73% illuminated as seen from Earth last night, this does not seem to be the far side of the Moon as photographes by Artemis II astronauts.
Pluto is a different colour and has those flat icy planes.
Ceres looks closer to moon than Pluto. But Ceres doesn't have any mare, the craters look larger (since Ceres is smaller) and it has those shiny patches of ice from the cryovolcanos.
If anything, I'd say the far side of the moon looks closer to Mercury (so long as you look at it from the side that doesn't have the spider on it)
Yep, the moon has a lot more colour than we can see from Earth because the reflection blows out all of it. And it requires a good camera to actually pick it up even when in orbit.
It does have those colours, but yeah the saturation has been boosted. Because cameras really struggle to capture them without the right conditions. They are just not as reflective as the less colourful regolith. Which results in them not showing up as well and getting washed out.
Not the full far side. Orientale Basin, the big round thing can actually be seen from Earth at times. What you have is part of the far side and part of the near side.
The mare (the dark patches) are on the near side of the Moon, and can easily be seen from Earth. The big part is most likely Oceanus Procellarum which is seen on the left side of the Moon from the northern hemisphere of Earth
To properly expose the sunlit landscape, astronauts used fast shutter speeds ( ~ 1/250th of a second) and small apertures, which do not allow enough time for the faint light of distant stars to register on the film or sensor.
While the sky appears black in space due to the lack of atmospheric scattering, the intense sunlight reflecting off the Moon's surface, creates a high-contrast environment that washes out the dim stars.
It's the Moon's ocean. We've been lied to all this time. There's water on the moon. Jk, yes, it's just craters from repeated impacts. The moon is our shield against the asteroid belt.
I was trying to be funny back then, and write "Cheeese!". But nobody could see it from our side. Looks like time got rid of it... would have been hilarious...
Ironically, the near side has lower average reflectivity, and so is technically darker than the far side. We’ve been looking at the dark side all along.
This is the far side of the moon, not the dark side of the moon. I know I tend to wrongly associate the two, but then I think about the Futurama episode where they're on the moon, trying to outrun the encroaching darkness
In reality, this is mostly the near side of the moon, which, by albedo, is darker than the far side. So it is the dark side and not (much of) the far side.
The far side of the moon is called the dark side of the moon. Not because it is always dark, but because we were in the dark about it. Even when we sent people originally they could not transmit from that side, leaving it in "the dark". Fun hey? https://airandspace.si.edu/stories/editorial/is-dark-side-moon-actually-dark

Isnt the moon made out of a piece of primitive Earth hit by a meteor or something like that? Need to go research whether i dreamed that

Thought I was pretty clear it's shot up pussy cheese, not sure if your views about meteor dreams are getting the way of common sense, or

Fuck the stars, I wanna know why it looks so discolored at the top. Are those deeper craters or something?

The brown areas come from iron oxide (rust), the dark blue comes from titanium deposits and volcanic rock.

mare. at some point in the past, but more recent than the moons early days, massive lava flows covered large portions of the moon with new

ironically, this statement is true. the moon is one of the darkest objects in the solar system.
tentacularfleshscape
As in light it gives off internally? Or what? Cos it has super high albedo
rrlyrae
its albedo is ~12%. most of the moon is dark gray.
tentacularfleshscape
Ack, lower down I corrected
RatsLiveOnNoEvilStar
I think it’s more about how reflective it is.
tentacularfleshscape
That's albedo. Either way not sure how it's the darkest, unless other celestial bodies have even higher albedo
