My sister's house is one house over from my parent's house and her cat can freely walk from her garden through her (very friendly) neighbour's garden to the garden of my parents. Every morning this happens: "Mother, I am but skin and bones!" *10 minutes and some hungry munching later* "Grandma, I'm but skin and bones!"

Oh, so you are ok with destroying your local ecosystem then.
In many places It's illegal to have outdoor cats due to the amount of native animals they kill.
And in some places any cat outdoors is legal to be killed on site, because cats can go feral so easily.

I understand your point and actually fully agree in terms of logic and generic love for cats.
But I had some free cats coming back home when I was a toddler, and for two times they just didn’t come back anymore.
We may be keep them inside for selfish love, but our cities are not made for cats.
Roads with cars, psychopaths with poisonous meat, stray dogs.
Once you lose one of those furry balls of love you decide that keep them inside is not so selfish in some cases.

All my cats are fixed. I rescued most of them and others are from strays. Yea cats might get hurt, they might kill some birds, they do that in the wild too. Cats are oblate carnivores and need meat, raw fresh meat is best. Canned or dry food is not very healthy for them but most people do not supplement. They are as much a wild animal as they are a domesticated one. If they are given the proper areas while inside, great, but most people dont do that.

I agree with you. Almost no-one keeps cats indoors in my country. But you can't say that on Imgur, Americans get really weird about it

It's illegal to have outdoor cats where I live.
Didn't used to be, it is now. And guess what 90% of people were able to change, and the cats didn't die nor suffer because of it.
And cats here can be killed if found outside onsite. And if they are caught and found to be yours get ready to pay a big fine and also lose your cat, because you don't get it back it goes into a shelter. Because you clearly can't follow the laws.
