We had a very long conversation about her realization that the current state our country is in was NOT what she voted for. My mother is a highly educated, intelligent woman, so I just couldn't understand why she would fall for the bullshit the MAGA assholes were selling. It was the reason behind so many arguments between her and me, or her and my son.
She explained that she was worried about our finances as a family, as well as her retirement. She was scared into voting, believing the hype that the Democrats were responsible for so many people losing their retirements. She felt she couldn't discuss it with us because we had been so vocal against Trump, so she internalized that fear and thought she was making the right choice.
My mom is in her 80s and remembers WWII as well as the McCarthy Red Scare and the Race Riots with segregation. Now that we're witnessing the true plans of the Trump administration, she can see how patterns are repeating and did not hesitate to step up and say she made a mistake. She came with us yesterday and marched between me and my son, dressed up as "Aunt Tifa". So when she hugged me and told me how she was proud of me and my son, we both hugged her back and told her we were so damn proud of her, too.
It is my hope that more people suckered by Trump start to see what is happening and step forward to face their fears like my mom did. This isn't about the Right or the Left, it's about what's Right or Wrong, and when they realize that fact, I think more will step up and say this isn't Right, and it certainly isn't what they voted for.

I was surprised this made it to the front page, but thanks for that. The comments were a mixed bag of harsh and hopeful, but I believe everyone is entitled to their opinions. I chose to be forgiving and show empathy. Does this make me weak? I don't think so.
As one commenter said, my mother didn't make excuses. She simply admitted she was wrong and told me she was sorry. What she did was out of fear. People do strange things when they are afraid, things that don't make sense. So it was a bit of an eye opener to read some of the comments toward my mom. I get it, not everyone can be forgiving and with everything going on right now, empathy is in short supply. I wasn't posting this to start the shit lords posting, though. I hoped it would give other's hope that people can change.
