I learned yesterday that some species of hummingbirds follow Sapsuckers, a type of woodpecker, to drink the nectar that flows from the holes they make in trees.

My house would disagree. The Northern flicker is drilling holes in my house as we speak. I'm going to get him one day.

A woodpecker’s tongue is so long that it wraps around its skull to protect its brain while it is hammering away at a tree or other hard surfaces.

While the length of the tongue is not in dispute, more recent studies suggest that the size of the brain and shape of the skull do more to protect the brain.

A woodpecker whacks on my metal chimney flue with his beak all day because it’s mating season. Noise goes through the whole house.

So are you gonna mate with it...or...?

If it would shut up, sure.

They are lovely birds - as long as they don't live next to your house that is made from wood. If they do, then they are a fucking pain in the ass who needs to be wiped off of the surface of the earth and go get fucked collectively as a group.

That is how I feel about squirrels

Unfortunately they are a protected species. I hung reflective streamers and spinners around my roof and it seems to have deterred them.

dirt motor biking in Mendocino California Lake Pillsbury at the campgrounds set up tents. road. great barbecue party drugs alcohol. morning we were woken by large chunks of wood failing onto our tents. everyone crawled out looking up, hearing jackhammer sounds to see a woodpecker larger than a bald eagle/dog pounding on branches going for insects. 30 witnesses say it was bigger than listed "19 inches"! https://www.birdful.org/what-is-the-largest-woodpecker-in-northern-california/

Did it look anything like this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivory-billed_woodpecker

we were in california so out of southern range. i'll never understand the supposed christian conservatives supporting republicans. they (pretend) they believe in gods and all his architecture of life on earth the planet but the republicans r clearly the driving forces for murdering god's creations to extinction! https://defenders.org/blog/2022/07/animals-brink-of-extinction

I'm no expert on American birds. But I did read that while it's considered extinct by some, sightings of the ivory billed woodpecker are persistently being reported and they're often outside the assumed official range. Cool sighting! And yeah, scared loveless people spread their internal torment outwards. Ofc they invent an ideology that justifies their behaviour. It's a tragedy that so many of them are in power.
