Don't mind me, just venting. I need to scream into the void and Imgur's close enough...

Last year, a really good job opportunity came open at work and I was very, VERY much in need of a change, so I took it. Nine months in, though, and I can't lie to myself any longer. Despite the fantastic schedule, it fucking suuuucks.

I went from working with retail customers to commercial mailers, which is a totally different ballgame. While it's not entirely a desk job, it's enough like it that I'm thoroughly miserable doing it.

I swear, if I never have to do another Zoom call, or check Outlook, or call a business customer, it'll be too soon. With retail customers, I felt like I was doing something that mattered, like I was an important part of the community. Now I'm just helping distribute advertising to landfills across the country.

I don't know how long I'm going to be stuck doing this, but god willing, a chance to transfer off this job will come sooner rather than later.

Alright, vent over... Time to carry on and embrace the suck.

I miss my office job, I lost it by end of 2025. Unemployment rate in my country is the worst in 15 yrs, and my industry is in decline. I'm riding on savings now, but I'll need to find a new field of work really soon, at "not being young" age.
Learn to find a hobby what helps you to recover from dayjob, and you can be fine. AI will replace us anyway, soon.

Learn to use folders and how to set rules for emails. You can have emails from certain senders automatically go into different folders.

I went from retail to a desk job but I get to be alone in a huge room, All day and I can personalize it. Only a few mile drive from home and 350 hours of PTO a year. 47k a year. I may have like 3 hours of meetings a week. Rest is computer stuff and I finish it all in a day the weeks worth. No supervision either. So thankful. I had a friend get a IT server job with similar situation but 80k no supervision. He'd watch movies all day, a lot less PTO but still. He got a whole building to himself.

the idealization of "corporate" work is really strong. People dont realize how it just sucks in a different way. I completely understand, i used to set up concerts, i worked with my hands for years. Now i've been in IT for 15 years and i miss the feeling of accomplishing something by the end of the day. when i do finish a project its more of a "its finally over" than a feeling of accomplishment.

blue collar/white collar both have their problems and their benefits.

In my 25+ years working, I’ve done private and public sector work across a wide range of industries, and the idea that white collar jobs are easy is laughable.

Teams calls, meetings, status calls. Wake up to 30 emails to filter through, lots of chatter. A handfull of messages in teams just saying "hi". Then i copy pasta "hi!, how may i help you?" to all of the threads. I just wanna get shit done

I always write "Hello" back.
No more, no less. It takes time to train people to not just say hi. nohello.net is also an option. They get it eventually.

i find it odd when people cry about having simple jobs.

What seemed so perfect about it?

Plus at least you don't have to use Teams.

The hours and the more relaxed pace. I tend to do poorly in high pressure, high stress environments. That's why I got off the retail window. Those things are still there and are still positives, I just find myself questioning the cost.

Also, is Teams really that much worse than Zoom?

Zoom = meetings.
Teams = meetings and corporate spyware.

"Also, is Teams really that much worse than Zoom?" Only when it actually works.
