That is a historical family heirloom that deserves some restorative love and care. I would love to hear her play an acoustical version of that song on the piano she wrote it on back in 1987. I think that would be absolutely amazing!
The music had a beat and you could dance to it. There was no fact check so everyone was cool if you didn’t know. Everything was new. The movies were amazing. We were living in the golden age and we didn’t know it.
Just like in the 50s and 60s, it was common to take cars and just enter them in a demolition derby. Smash them up for the entertainment of the crowd, then chuck the cars and not think twice about it. Now today, those cars, such as the 57 Chevy Bel-Air are some of the most sought after cars in the classic automotive market. At the time, to them, they were just cars. They’re gonna make more. Who cares? But now hindsight may make some of those people wish they hadn’t destroyed those beautiful cars.
I gotta admit, I thought she was like 13 when only in my dreams came out, even as a kid. She was 16. 19 when electric youth came out, so I guess it's not too crazy. But some of her material im now reading was written earlier, so that's pretty fuckin impressive. I guess she had been writing songs since she was quite young. She is 8 years older than me and I always thought it was like 2. TIL.
The old saying goes, "You've got your whole life to write your first album, but 12 to 18 months to write your second... and you're probably doing that on tour for the first". It's questionable how much albums and record deals are relevant anymore (today you need something new in front of your fans every week, not necessarily a song but something), but they certainly were when Gibson was in the spot light.
This just reminds me that there's a like 20ish year old kid on YT shorts that repairs pianos... and makes more money than I do >.< But I would imagine he isn't working all the time, supply and demand issues surely.
The 1900-1920 was the heyday of piano production. The 1910s produced more pianos than any other decade. The average lifespan of a typical piano with basic maintenance is ~100 years over the typical conditions of the prior century (i.e. without HVAC). Math says he's as busy as he wants to be.
Hm. I'm probably one of ten people these days who knows how to rebuild a reproducing piano. Maybe I should be a yotube star and overhaul my Steck/Duo Art
Well they were very popular in the early parts of the 20th century but the depression turned most into firewood. Bit of a resurgence in the 70's, then back down to not a whole lot.
The thing I like about the Aeolin system is it's basically a 8 bit digital to analog computer. And the music you hear from say Gershwin is music that HE WAS PLAYING at the time.
Just need to start with rebuilding the vacuum pump system. Complex, but do-able.

"Hi Debbie Gibson!" is a quote that I never thought I'd say, yet here we are.

Still pretty after all these years.
TinyOctopus
And just like that, tiny octopus is a kid again, crushing on the girl downstairs.
Like, literally downstairs. He lived in a co-ed group home, guys upstairs and girls in the basement level, and good lord, Cathy was so fucking cute.

Co-ed group home...man, I'm sure that never caused any issues...

Niagaran
Her fight scene with Tiffany was a highlight of "Mega Python vs Gatoroid"

Her pictorial in Playboy was also nice.
Pwnzistor
She's forreal 55? I don't believe it
LanceTex
Yup - just a year older than me and covered my high school days (along with Prince and Metallica). Looks much better than my fat balding ass!
Pwnzistor
I'm sure your ass is just fine

I did not expect at any point that any teeny bopper (none, I was sure of it, I thought) pop performer wrote their own shit.

Kate Bush wrote her first hit, "Wuthering Heights" at 18 but "The Man with the Child in his Eyes" was written at 13

Always preferred her over Tiffany for my adolescent pining.

Tiffany ruined the Jetson's movie. There. I said it.

I agree, she was way better than Tiffany but Tiffany always did the mall performances. Then didn't get me started on The Bangles and Susanna Hoffs!
