Oklahoma orders schools to teach the Bible in every classroom - https://www.reuters.com/world/us/oklahoma-orders-schools-teach-bible-every-classroom-2024-06-27/
As a citizen, keep your religion out of my government.
As a religious person, keep your government out of my religion.
Separation of Church and State protects both.
MilkStoutOnTap
They need bibles in the classroom so the kids can give each other last rites during the shootings.

Christians can't even agree inside their own denominations what doctrine should be taught and how. They quibble over the most moronic points, to say nothing of the wide chasms between bigger positions like those that divide the major denominations. To imagine they could agree on doctrine to be taught universally in schools is laughable. And it's the REAL wackos that are pulling this crap.

SherMattLockSmith
Also of note: It is against Oklahoma's state constitution to use public funds to teach the bible in schools.
JacktheKind
I basically got interesting in christianity as a teenager, because of my humanist/socialist upbringing and found it reflected there.
I would love to teach the bible there... Jesus is far too "liberal" for their liking... also the way Israel was organized in the desert, was essentially a socialist commune!
And it says that you can't indebt anyone for more than seven years? (or every seven years all debt is forgiven....)
They're not even ignoring the core, but also the abominable shellfish parts!
charondaboatman
This is a concerted effort to overwhelm courts with bullshit so that maybe, just maybe something will get through. They’ve become emboldened by the SCOTUS and by Trump. Bullies acting alone are easy to shut down. Organized groups of them are much more difficult to shut down.
UnoriginalPieceOfRepeatingShit
Yup
ballsoutflyer
Bullies also like to keep coming back to try again and again. Shut them down *HARD*.

Simple, they are fucking around.
victalany
Malicious compliance solution: teach only the most heinous parts of the Bible as a critical thinking lesson.
NepLeet
Absofuckinglutely!!
NewScaleHerpetoculture
Agreed, but are they then obligated to teach the remaining 4.2% of it?
coderay
"Challenges" is not even close to the right verb. "Shits on" might be closer. Willfully and obviously disobeying what is clearly a constitutional requirement, especially as an elected official, should be CRIMINAL.
bigdix69420
Why
IamTheTeapot
Christian theocrats think everyone needs to be Christian.
bigdix69420
Ugh what a problem.

I think the Coptic Christians have the most books in their New Testament. If we use that one we won't leave anyone out...right ?
DrasticBastard
Don’t forget the Satanic Bible
somewhatparanoidpanda
We fought a war about that over 200 years ago.
afambelafonte
But did we?
ballsoutflyer
Looks like we're about to do it again.
teardropivyyearofthetiger
Fantastic! Which version? Satanist Bible? Quran? The Vedas? Book of Moron*? Pali Canon? Sacred texts of Santeria? Ka Baibala Hemolele? I’m sure I’m missing some…
butari2babe
It is possible to teach it as literature. I m not sure that is what they are thinking though.
GiraffaPontifex
Good! Do it. Teach them just how much you actually ignore it's teachings. Forcing them to read the bible while you spout of cherry picked nonsense will only drive those children further from religion. Do it. Do this in every state.
Redyls
if it was me, id straight up teach it facetiously and vindictively. talk about all the ways religion has hurt people and humanity as a whole. talk about how forcing things like this is oppression and indoctrination. and about how wrong it is to do that. and since we are imposing the teaching about religion then why not add the Quran and all the other religions? on a side note Zoroastrianism is quite interesting when you get into their whole numbers bit.
Rendova
How about how the missionaries screwed with the native americans. Perhaps how it was a CHRISTIAN NATION (Germany) that did the Holocaust.
ChrisVZ
Time to start teaching about all the murder, rape, slavery, incest and genocide contained in it.
Hexidimentional
yeah teach about sodom and gomorrah
AbelardSnazz
themed lessons about welcoming refugees, feeding the poor and homeless, whipping capitalists and rich people going to hell - if they call it D&I or CRT, the cons hate it, but you could easilly teach an ultra-liberal agenda using the bible.
PenguinPete
Yeah, wait till this plan backfires! The last thing American Christians want is for more people to READ the Bible, they just don't know it.
superheavydeathmetal
But they won’t teach that stuff. Just like in church, they will only teach the happy, feel-good parts, then add the, “now just say the word so you don’t go to Hell”, at the end. They will ignore all of the barbarity and moral depravity.
PenguinPete
I cannot emphasize enough the scope of imagination of a teacher whom has been given instructions they resent, but vaguely open to interpretation. Nobody said yet what *part* of the Bible to teach...
Targe0
Oh yeah, Bible literacy will ruin half the shit they preach. Because it literally teachers to care for and support all your fellow humans, regardless of who they are. It will also render their “The Bible says” bullshit useless because all those kids will know it doesn't actually say that.
subrosaflorens
Don't forget the abortion.
Audasity
and the song about bashing babies brains against rocks
Targe0
Especially the part where Jesus endorses them.
StoppedLurkingtoDownvote
Or the part that tells you to get a priest to mix up a drink to cause one.
itsjustplaid
I hope this backfires and turns all the kids into Atheists by age 9.
Targe0
Or worse, it will turn them into actual Christians. Who will actually follow the religion's teachings. Meaning, they would never follow anything the GOP pushes. And it will make them immune to all their bible thumping bullshit they make up, because these kids will actually know what is in the dam book.
Clymenus000
My elementary school had a Bible class once a week that was opt in by default (had to get a parent's signature to opt OUT). I think it really did contribute to me becoming an atheist later on. It was my least favorite subject!
wobblecopterrrr
i mean.. I have studies world religion in multiple english, sociology, anthropology classes, etc.. none of that made me more religious, turning a critical eye to religion will backfire spectacularly, teenagers are ruthless.
zulireth
Also they want to get them early, not just teenagers.
coderay
That is a good point. A silver lining to this shitshow.
wobblecopterrrr
*studied
drousnavat
Wow, this is not OK.
EggOfWisdom
It’s ok to teach that religion exists. It’s not ok to teach it as the truth

As a resident of Oklahoma, I agree. I think Ryan Walters got upset because until today, when you Googled him, the first result was his term end date.

BRB moving east. Actually I guess I gotta move a lot further since it navigated to Tulsa instead of the OK border.
DrasticBastard
My wife is from OK, this is pretty on point for the state. Also, my mother in law probably isn’t the person they had in mind when they passed this law. And she is a very malicious compliance sort of person, and she is very knowledgeable about the Bible.
Orionsdick
Someone’s gonna learn how big the emissions of donkeys are
drousnavat
Sir, I was only here for the "OK" pun. My thoughts on the matter are too complex to be expressed without a molotov and chains.
MeowWoof
I see this going one of two ways: either get a latin Bible and use it to teach latin, and show how the Bible has changed over the years when the translated texts doesn't match the version they're taught at home. Or go ahead and read the story of Noah and then go "ok class, who can tell me a problem with this story."
lljkstonefish
Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek. Take your pick. Not Latin.
AvidApostate
How, in the 21st century, are we regressing to the Dark Age? Religious zealotry is the real plague.

Because Evangelicals were ignored when they were meddling in politics and lobbying for the last 100 years and they are unveiling their plan

Lawow74
Hypercapitalism says a neo-feudal state where the rich rule like the landed lords of old, owning everything they allow all the illiterate, uneducated serfs to use to produce them more wealth, and keep them in line with a combination of military force and religious brainwashing, is the best way of life. As long as you're rich, of course. Everything they're doing is pushing us towards that end, because they know the other road leads to them all in the dirt with the rest of us.
exlurker42
Optimism died, people are looking for hope and certainty in old places.

Religions in general are a problem. They have never been anything but a control method.
