The prototype B-52 Stratofortress had a tandem cockpit like the B-47 Stratojet. (source wikipedia) .

I've only seen the BUFF once in person at CFB Gander. Sat with my Father at the fence before the threshold of Runway 13 watching the trijets come in to refuel. The B-52 came in right over our heads.

How about that B36 behind it?

Why did the B-52 switch from a tandem cockpit to a side-by-side cockpit?

Easier communication between the crew.

What's a tandem cockpit?

Glancing at the photo it looks like one pilot is in front of the other rather than side by side. Similar to how pilots sat in a F-14 Tomcat.
