I'm a weeb, of course I can Naruto run too, but that's the extent of my power. She looks like a professional, who knows what kind of secret jutsu she has under that kimono. I guess you could say I can do the sexy jutsu but that's it 😹
I read today that actual Geishas 'they're not prostitutes' are a dying breed. Not many girls want to become it anymore. Being skilled in several arts like dancing music and conversation takes time. Screening up front is still severe, and the way they're paid is quite complicated. Also the disteicts where they used to live are bought up by hotel chains and stuff.
The Geisha and prostetue thing is such an old misconception, Geisha is not even the word used for the girls who did look a bit like Geisha. But yes it is a dying profession. The youtube channel "Lets ask Shogo" has a few really interesting videos on the topic and he is great at explaining both culture, meaning of words and so on! I can highly recommend 😊
Read "Geisha: A Life, the memoir of Mineko Iwasaki" if you'd like a good story that details some of the strict training and culture that surrounds Geisha based in the mid 20th century (1950-1980). The author is who inspired "Memoires of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden which only helped perpertuate the "prostitute" idea. I even think Iwasaki sued Gordon for defamation and breach of contract when he revealed her identity prompting her to release her own book to set the record straight.
FYI video shows a tourist in rented kimono outfit. Real geishas have full white face, and don't disturb them for a picture or else when you see one in the street, they have places to be, just like you when you go to work. A picture I took in Kyoto some time ago.
I'd also imagine that the social stigma of prostitution is strong even if that's not what they're doing. From the clients expecting things, public opinion, friends and family quietly thinking it, etc
I'm not so sure. If you're rich enough to hire a geisha in this century, you probably know the rules, and you can get physical attention for less money elsewhere. You wouldn't wanna fuck up a relationship with a geisha you enjoy, good luck finding another one like her. The "top tier prostitute" image of the geisha is more a western thing.
When I travelled to Japan (back in 2009) I was incredibly fortunate, one of the places I was staying at in Kyoto organised events for people staying there. During the few days I was there, they had invited a Geisha and her Maiko apprentice to perform for guests. Afterwards, they made the rounds to talk with us and get pictures taken etc.. Very cool. It was clear from speaking with the Maiko that the screening and training was brutal.
Ahah, it was my first ever solo trip at the age of 19. I had nothing booked (first night's accommodation only), so ending up at that place with that specific event on was a complete coincidence. Another fun coincidence, I met the same Kiwi in both Tokyo and Kyoto whilst I was travelling. But you're right, it was a different time and different energy, I do miss travelling like that, no smartphones, no constant posing for socials etc. (also, hello almost daily internet cafes for map prints lol).
Sounds like a pretty interesting trip... were you solo or travelling with friends? I mean to go back to Japan some time but there are so many places to visit and so little time, I've hit around 30 countries so far (easier as a European) but it's not enough. Did you go again at any point?

It blew my mind that the fancy restaurants for locals had actual geisha books where you would pick out a geisha to entertain you.

Nice! I was there the same year, just before the advent of instagram-hyped mass tourism. We were indeed super lucky to experience it that way.
