there is a downed power pole, with the cables across the road. as you can see from the bright flash, they still have power running through them. downed power lines are exceptionally dangerous and should never, ever be approached. The amount of current running through them can electrocute you by running through the ground near the cables (unless its like, dry sand. but probably best not to experiment with conductivity)
I drove over some downed power lines once. It was the day after a big storm and I was out in the country, driving somewhere for work down a road i wasn't familiar with, because the other roads were closed from downed branches or entire trees. Came around a blind corner and there was a downed power pole with its lines draped across the road. Before I could stop i was on top of them and at that point I decided to gun it
Yep and hasn't learned anything from the experience. Due to them being so monumentally stupid. Beyond logic or reason to full on retard, as displayed here
DWI actually means DUI too. "Driving while intoxicated". i don't know why there can't be a standard name for it. some places have OWI - operating while intoxicated. OUI is operating under the influence. OVI - operating vehicle impaired. OMVI - operating a motor vehicle intoxicated. OVUII is opperating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant. etc
AWD is awesome on ice. Way way better than 2WD. If you have winter tires. This is why the average German or Scandinavian in an Audi station wagon will drive circles around an American 4X4 Pickup truck in weather like this.
Winter tires aside, the handling of trucks tends to be terrible. They have a high center of mass and a large gap underneath for air to create lift. Simply accelerating or braking, or being in a gust of wind, shifts the weight of a truck more than it shifts a sedan, potentially unbalancing the weight on the wheels. Though since internal combustion engine vehicles tend to be front heavy, accelerating has less negative impact than braking on weight distribution.
Like modern tech in general? (sorry that was mean) Keep in mind tho that an Audi Quattro (not the rallly car) from the 80s would also handle better than a modern American pickup in that weather. So would any FWD car.
I'd argue that even one of those overpowered RWD BMWs with their overconfident drivers handle better in those conditions than a pickup that has a center of mass that is trying to reach new heights. ;)
They are stuck in the snow, sometimes rocking back and forth can get you unstuck, but.... this is really really really bad technique. I mean I'd say he has just absolutely no clue what he's doing.
Guy in the video says "just get out of the truck" - if you're ever in a situation where current is running through your car, doing this could KILL YOU.
You CAN get out but you have to be very careful. Do not touch the vehicle once you're touching the ground, keep your feet together, and hop away. If you try to walk or run you'll find a difference in potential between your foot closest to the electrical source and the one furthest = voltage =shocked or electrocution. Keeping your feet together keeps the potential the same (so long as you don't trip and fall. See previous statement).
Obviously, your best choice is to wait in the car until power is shut off, but if you were in a situation where you couldn't wait, then doing the above is the safest way to get out danger.
it's pretty damn hard to ignite the gas IN the tank at all; you have to spark into the right fuel-air mix and the tanks are lined with nonconductive materials for obvious reasons. Fire is a risk after a crash because the gas leaks onto the ground and starts evaporating, creating that dangerous air mix over a wider, less protected area. The hollywood thing where someone shoots at a gas tank is VERY unlikely to make boom, though. The risk in this video is, he's gonna get out of the truck. Zap.
However ... Much of the danger is in grounding out the wire (which we saw happen when the insulation stripped away under tension), or more precisely, being a conductor that connects the wire to ground. So, being that the rubber tires insulate the vehicle from ground, the main hazard here is probably more related to hot sparks starting an engine fire.
Fun fact: the carbon black in rubber tires makes them conductive. Similarly, a guy on the Honda insight forum rebuilt his battery (sticks of 6 cells shrink-wrapped) and put the sticks back into the black rubber holders without the shrinkwrap for testing and whoops! The smoke! https://www.insightcentral.net/threads/diy-read-battery-burning-yikes.25470/
Somewhat true. Primary voltage can easily jump around (possibly through as well) the tires to the ground if the line is on the car, though they wouldn't hurt the person inside...unless that person gets out and touches both the vehicle and ground simultaneously. Or has their feet too far apart when standing on the ground, as there is a potential gradient in the ground from the downed wire.
I'm not entirely certain what happened there, though, as I can't see the lines clearly enough to identify them. In my experience, primary wires are almost never insulated, though, so tearing away insulation shouldn't be the cause of the flash. But if those are going to the building, they should be secondary, which is generally just 120/240, which would not cause the flash seen. Actually, I think I just figured it out.
So, being grounded alone doesn't make a line safe, because the potential between a primary and the ground is not as high as the potential between a primary and a different phase primary. So if one line is touching one part of your car and another is touching a different part, you can get a fault between them, and the current would likely take that path even if one of the primaries is also touching the ground.
I think that's what happened, and then one or both of the lines was pulled off of the insulator, and arc over as it was being disconnected (causing the flash at the pole).
Yeah, that's terrifying. Call the 911 and the power company if something like that happens; a lot of times, it might trip a recloser and go offline, then energize again (basically, the vast, vast majority of faults are from tree limbs touching a conductor from the wind or something similar, so the recloser will close again to see if the fault is still there). Stay away from downed lines, even if you think they aren't energized (and even if they're phone lines).
this is covered in first responder training. when responding to an emergency, first be safe, otherwise you're just making more work for the EMTs/coroner.
