They are actually so dense in their bone and muscle structures that they are entirely nonbouyant and actually run across the bottoms of river beds. They're not nasty. The problem lies in humans being at the river in the morning and evening when they're transitioning from land feeding. The hippos panic when they feel they're being kept out the water, that's how lions hunt them.
