In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

So I live in a very, very, very white state. There are some great people, but a lot of us have no idea what life is like for minorities, our own fellow American citizens, in other parts of the country. We say things like, "C'mon, we've had Obama AND Black Panther--racism doesn't exist anymore!" and "Heck! Before I bought my enormous house for $100K, I went to college AND worked at Dairy Queen, so don't tell me I have privilege!"

Specifically, "White Privilege" is something a lot of us struggle with. Most of my students (I teach at a university) and neighbors have no idea what it means, but they're still mad at it. I made this guide for them. Liberty and justice for all.

The bigots really are out in force today - hopefully more people see it, because this is solid, straightforward explanation.

this is much better than the "being white is the lowest difficulty setting" video game analogy.

So is it helping black people out when they get prime seats behind trump at a trump rally?

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 20

That's tokenization. "These are Trump's good blacks"

As a german from Nazi parents, I disagree.

On what point?

Generally pretty good graphic. Only change I'd make is that the system is not betraying the ideals -- it was constructed without them.

Every single injustice you see here is not the coincidental byproduct of a broken system. It is exactly what the system was built to produce

I always like John Scalzi's essay, "Straight, White Male: The Lowest Difficulty Setting There Is" for explaining privilege.

Haha, really upset some people with that. Hey haters, maybe give it a read instead of letting it trigger your fight-or-flight response.

Where are these enormous houses for $100k at? Asking for a friend?

Seems to me that a big part of the problem is people not getting that we are only one race, the human race. There's far more variation in...

And we shouldn't see race, everyone is different. We need to embrace that.
