I remember when the show first came out But the first couple of episodes didn’t really grab me, so I kinda gave up on it. But then a friend who was watching it said “you need to watch the paintball episode.“ And that’s when I totally got back into it all the way.
I’ve probably watched the whole series at least a dozen times already. The first D&D episode will always be my favorite. It’s got everything: action, romance, and real human emotions.

Usually it takes a show a few episodes, maybe even half a season, to find its tone, but Season 1 of Community is pretty much all bangers.

I would argue that since the other 4 Harmon led seasons are all better, that it also took a while to find its tone, but just managed to do well enough up to that point.

Season 1 had almost no surreal episodes or movie homages, which would make up the bulk of later seasons.
So no, it hadn't found its tone yet.
It got closer as the season ended, with the chicken episode and paintball, but again, that was a small percent of the season right at the end.
