Druids be crazy

If that happened to me it could turn me into a reincarnation believer. It would be weirder if the bird chirped a name of a dead person I knew.

There's something magical about earning the truth of a bird such as this.

This morning, after returning home from some errands, our cat (Clyde) came running into the house with something in his mouth. Long story short, it was a bird. Found out that it was still alive but had a broken wing. We still haven't been able to -gently- capture that bird. We don't want to cause more harm to its wing. Since it can't fly, I think we now have a new pet.

Call a wildlife rescue/rehabber. The bird will likely die without a full round of antibiotics: cats are the #1 cause of death of songbirds in much of the world, on the order of *billions* of birds/year in the US and UK apiece. The bacteria in their mouths/on their claws will usually kill animals with even a small scratch. + that bird deserves a chance to recover & live wild.

Cats should be indoors regardless, b/c of this threat to wildlife along with a lifespan *years* lower than indoor cats.

I've got a Canadian goose that's been hanging out with my flock for the last year. She and the duck are best friends. Every morning when I let my birds out and start feeding 'em breakfast, she flies in and starts making her happy noises. Sometimes she and the duck hunker down and nap next to me on the porch when I stay out to soak up some morning sunshine.

This is just so adorable! Tell her I said hi!

12 hours ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Canadian geese can be so territorial and bold about it -- usually they don't befriend other animals. Quite special that she has taken a liking with the duck!

9 hours ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh, she's VERY territorial. She keeps ALL the other geese out of the yard, and chases the killdeer and mourning doves away, too! I dunno why she picked us/our duck, but she's welcome as long as she likes.

robins are known to become very trusting and even tame when they get used to the repeated presence of a specific human, even more so when they are fed and eventually petted...

20 hours ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Interesting -- I'd not known that the Robin bird species had that capacity naturally.

9 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah, the ones around my dad's house would just about eat out of our hands after decades of him feeding them.

I'm guessing one of the reasons Bob came to him in the first place was because he was constantly digging up bugs and worms while he was working?

Yep, my old mum has a friendship with a blackbird who she met when she'd add to the compost bin for that reason. 2 years later & Buddy the blackbird still visits her every day. Sometimes when I visit they'll be sitting in the backyard together, mum reading, Buddy hopping on the armrest of the chair.

Lures him into a false sense of security before robin him

23 hours ago | Likes 174 Dislikes 0

Yep. 10 years from now, all his bank accounts are cleared out. His house got sold out from under him.

There's Bob.

In the shadows... in the trees... Little black beady eyes. Inside, the reflection of Tony slamming his truck door and driving away. And now, it's onto the owner. Sorry, Tony Thanks for the good times.

As an American, seeing this bird called a robin always fucks me up. Like surely the bird on the right has a Native American name....and I just have to live my life thinking of it as a robin.

18 hours ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The American Robin is a thrush, not at all a robin. People just missed the robins from home and named the first red chested bird after it.

5 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The reverse happened when someone pointed out a "robin" to me in the US. It's an entirely different species. It's like some of the early colonisers were homesick and decided to name this bird after the one they knew in Europe.

15 hours ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not only that, they imported a bunch of non-native birds for dumb, nostalgic/Eurocentric reasons. Even though the whole "birds of Shakespeare" story isn't true, they sure as shit brought a bunch of starlings and other crap here. A few of them made it, and now the Eastern bluebirds and the purple martins get their nests destroyed by house sparrows etc. We need to unleash wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes.

I wonder if Bob did what corvids do - spread the word around.

23 hours ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

Bob wrote a book about his friendship with Tony.

14 hours ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Bob might have taken his offspring back there before he passed. Yeah.
That's the most logical human response we could actually give without observation.

Lol. BOBservation. https://media4.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPWE1NzM3M2U1MW44a2kzMmJ6cnZzbWc4ZjIzZGE1NXR1aGk0NXZpMjViejc3amoyayZlcD12MV9naWZzX3NlYXJjaCZjdD1n/dk3TmFZpn6pUI/200w.webp

Have you or have you not heard that bird is the word?

20 hours ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Oh, WoodORama, you date thyself mightily. 😏😉🤪😹

9 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seems plausible. I mean... wild birds are usually very, very leery of humans. It takes a special set of circumstances to win trust.

22 hours ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Especially tiny dirds, they are pretty jumpy, and rightly so. I'm lucky to have some reflective windows in my backyard currently (with some tape to avoid collisions) and I'm content to see them hang out just a few metres from the window. I see a few robins here and there, they are so damn cute!
Also feel a bit more atease about not disturbing wold fauna, not all humans will be nice to them.

20 hours ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

With a lot of small birds the special circumstances are "food"! Digging in a garden or just standing still with seeds in your palm is often enough. And when one is brave enough to try the rest will usually watch, learn and follow. But I've had a little Nemesis for several years now, a blue tit that thinks that I'm out to steal his lady. He comes a knockin to fight every spring. But it isn't communicated in the group (as it would with corvids), so the rest is just happy to see me fill the feeder.

I love that such a small bird is out there thinking "I will fuck that human up if they don't stay away from my girl!"
