My midlife crisis was being unemployed for 3+ years and suffering from chronic depression and anxiety. It still is.

I splurged and paid for a shave and a haircut. It was more than two bits and it was not good.

#1 Too late. I spent my entire childhood desperately seeking approval that I never got.
Damn, I really am broken.

I suppose I'm lucky in that my parental unit made a point of always moving the goalposts when it came to praise or approval. So, even when I do the thing, there was always a "yes. but you didn't do the thing well enough. so no praise for you." to follow. I just stopped trying and focused on the bare minimum and not caring about anything. it's a different sort of broken.

That's how my stepmom was. Nothing was ever good enough for her. I joined the Navy, went through boot camp and A school, and then went home on leave. While at home, my dad gave me the "Proud parent of a sailor" sticker to put on their car and she stopped me, saying "you haven't done anything yet, you aren't a sailor".
That was my life with her. She died a few weeks ago and I haven't shed a single tear.
