Saturday Morning Chicken Vibes

Apr 11, 2026 1:55 PM

It is a beautiful day in the Tennessee Valley. I let the teenagers out from the coop to soak in some of that wonderful sun.

They like to huddle underneath our willow tree. I sat with them for a few minutes while I enjoyed my coffee.

Jamaican Jerk and Mango like to visit.

The teenagers have such striking colours.

Cotton Candy also wanted to say good morning. He has become one of my favorites because he acts more like a dog than a chicken. Such a sweetheart.

And lastly, can't help but show off my boi, Oreo. He is a silver sebright.

Look at that adorable little face!

I love love love the lil chatter chickens make. It's so cute!

Such good chickens. Tell them I love them, they're all beautiful. Happy weekend to the whole Quack Family, too.

I'm not sure what exactly says about me, but I sometimes enjoy seeing chickens more than cats.

You don't see many chicken posts. They are very peaceful creatures and lovely pets. I've honestly stopped eating chicken because of them.

We named all the first generation chickens after being flavors. We lived in Oak Ridge until I got transferred back down here near Huntsville. :D

Gawd I miss my Aviary.
Coffee and Mealworms with the Quails before the Sun came up. Then the Finches would rouse as the Dawn Chorus began. Magpies outside would start to chortle and warble. Then my Cockatiels would start in, such a peaceful, uplifting start to the day...
AND THEN The Local Gang of Short Billed Corellas would fly overhead on their way to feed. It was just a Local Mob, just short of a Thousand. But every one was competing to be the LOUDEST!
No Snooze Button there. Off to Work.

I was with you up until the point where you said 'before the sun came up'

Yeah, It sucks to wake up whilst you are dreaming, but when your snooZe button is stumble through pouring kibble for the Bunnycat that slept all night in the crook of your arm, Make a Coffee, wash the bits, then be greeted by the chirping little bits of fluff and their parents, that you've seen hatch. TBH I can put up with a lot worse.

If you want to hear the Corellas, look it up. I will not be a part of that. SAFETY WARNING! Do NOT Wear iEar Buds or actual Headphones.

I have had the honour of witnessing a flock of wild budgies descend on a billiabong to drink. They'll get right in and float with wings spread as hundreds of thousands of them wheel and soar above in a Green and Gold murmaration above. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5atV3SM4Yk
This is why we wear the Green and Gold.

How is Benji doing?

50ish? Have you considered getting him a Convertible? He would be in his Midlife Crisis. Maybe introduce him to Cinnamon or Pearl or any of the other ladies? I have heard said that Cockatiels can Interbeed with Red Rumped Parrots. (Red Rumped Parrots come in all sorts of Colour Morphs, my best one was Floss, a Cobalt Blue Red Rumped Parrot. I never successfully bred them, nor actually sexed them, Floss just wasn't interested. But my Goodness that was one beautiful and friendly bird. I miss Floss

Sadly, I think he is on his last leg. He had a stroke two days ago so we are trying to make sure he is happy and healthy for a 31 year old. 🥲

And I went and drew attention to him! I am a Pariah!
How long did you get to know him?

Bird People will understand. A lot of the time, Birds outlive their Owners. So "How Old?" and "How Long?" are two different questions. Show some respect.

I had a Cockatiel (Ethel. Male. Don't Judge.) They acted as if they were on their last leg for 15 Years! I had a Vet go through my Aviary, Diagnosis? Drama Queen.
One of the last.
