Some polevaulting

This is a fascinating 2 hour documentary....

Pole vaulting is cool but iv never understood why it's a thing. How does this sport happen? Entertaining though.

So USA Swimming had to ban cameras in certain parts of the pool during competitions because of sick assholes taking pictures of the little girls bending over to start the races.

5 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I see the camera is a little heavy to keep at the proper height.

I perfectly understand the operator.

Those camera are really heavy.

Wonder why it is that women’s outfits show skin from ankle to asscheeks but men’s dont

“Actually having your bare ass out for pervs to fap to is the only way to make sure men can see you as a sex object first and a world class athlete second”

Ooohh thanks for clarifying

No problem

Did that pole just break? That's not her fault, right?

19 hours ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

no, and that's something that happens to every pole vaulter one time or another. I believe they say it's *incredibly* unnerving, but you have to learn to get past it and go for the next try.

4 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What happens if the pole shatters like that? Do they get a redo?

19 hours ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yes. A broken pole doesn't not count as an attempt.

Nope.

Curious just how far apart a good vaulting pole is from a breaking pole. Is it simply a matter of time, or something else?

19 hours ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

time or manufacturing error...they want them light, so they are as close to breaking as possible i assume and get worn out over time by repeated stress...

17 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wanted to do this sport when I was younger.

19 hours ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The fall is one thing. But the fear of impaling myself on the pole is what kept me at high jump.

This. Every time I watch polevaulting I get Final Destination vibes.

The focus on the Norwegian one was exceptionally creepy.

20 hours ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 11

She’s one of the most attractive women I’ve ever seen and beautiful people make great TV - as does showing the emotion on the face of the athlete, but a wider angle / further back when she’s going over the bar is warranted, especially for showing technique and form. The way they focus on her butt pleases the lizard brain, but I would like to think that we should at least aspire to be further evolved than that.

17 hours ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

But impressive, like the last one. That is pretty amazing.

19 hours ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah, she was damn graceful when she cleared the jump, like it was nothing.

17 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do they get the option to wear shorts?

19 hours ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 4

Don't give them ideas !

19 hours ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 22

Sponsorship. They can wear the tight fitting shorts that mostly won't affect performance, but most of their income comes from sponsorship.

14 hours ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yes, but long shorts get snagged. The men wear tight shorts too. And, if we are being honest, these young attractive women are also competing for sponsorships because niche sports don't pay much.

17 hours ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

At least some men wear longer shorts that are still skin tight.

16 hours ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Remember that one dude who caught his package on the bar? Bet he'd have worn even tighter shorts if he could

13 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

If he wore a g string it wouldn't have stopped what happened what are you taking about

3 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m guessing they want tight fitting clothing so as not to snag the pole when going over it

17 hours ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I hope not

9 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

there is basically no sport that enforces skimpy clothing, the only restrictions are either safety or fairness issues...most sports can and are performed by muslims in almost full body covers...

17 hours ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 12

I remember there being backlash from a volleyball team being fined because they didn’t want to wear such revealing shorts

16 hours ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

years ago, long resolved...and might actually have been beach handball because what people regurgitate on the internet is mostly wrong...the "beach" sports have rules enforcing "beach" attire because of the spirit of the sports and its roots, but to my knowledge they all have eventually loosened them a bit so the athletes dont have to feel exposed...

16 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

I suppose it's relative, but 2021 isn't "years ago, long resolved" in my books.

15 hours ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

This is not true. The only recent case of this was women’s team handball, which was resolved years ago.

14 hours ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It was the handball team. Beach volleyball allows a wide variety of clothing options. The majority of the women wear bikinis, but it's their choice.

16 hours ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yes. They have significant leeway in attire. This is true in all track & field events. Some wear longer shorts.

18 hours ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 5

Thanks

16 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When did this choice occur? Because my wife who was a D1 pole vaulter in the 2005-2008 timeframe had to wear the thong shorts.

14 hours ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

May have been a school rule? I don’t know the timingg, but today NCAA very closely track USATF ruless, which mainly pertain to limiting logos. NCAA rules add that all competitors on the same team must have tops of the same color, and that both tops and bottoms must be school colors. There is no rule that the wear the same tops or bottoms, just the same colors.

At the olympics the US competitors had dozens of options, including the wearing the designs for the opposite gender if they so chose.

13 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Forgot to add: only real difference between NCAA and USATF is that NCAA doesn’t allow bare midriffs, which are very common in international competition (and at track practice in college, just not at the meets)

13 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was actually going to ask something about the shorts. If men can wear (somewhat) regular shorts why do most female pole vaulters wear those booty shorts? Do they have the choice and they prefer them?

19 hours ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

I think the best way to look at this is through the women’s Olympic volleyball lens. They don’t want men dictating what they wear but they chose garments for functionality and don’t have the same hang ups about showing their upper thighs as men. That only became a thing after Michael Jordan, btw. He wore longer shorts to cover up his Lycra thigh whatevers. I think they choose the shorts.

17 hours ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 7

If they choose it thats fine and their choice. I was just wondering if there was a functional reason, or if they were required (which would be creepy).

16 hours ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Bikini briefs were required in volleyball which was creepy. I think it’s just easiest. The Greeks used to do the Olympics nude.

16 hours ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

They only did that to guarantee that no women snuck in to compete

1 hour ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ANY piece of fabric that isn't skintight is a piece of fabric that can flap in the breeze, touch the bar, or otherwise cause you to fail to clear. Male pole vaulters wear similarly skintight shorts. Slightly longer sleeves... but women don't have to worry about certain bits of anatomy coming out in mid-gyration.

Im not talking about skin tight, I understand skin tight. Why are they choosing to wear close to thongs? Men wear skin tight shorts that arent up their ass.

16 hours ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Only one pole must vault per attempt.

9 hours ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As I said, the men HAVE to wear shorts with slightly longer sleeves because they have anatomy that can potentially slip out in mid-gyration. Remember that the Olympics is all about winning the gold for your country. Countries go CRAZY over trying to win that gold. They cheat, they abuse athletes, they groom kids from near-infancy to be Olympic contenders. They aren't wearing the booty shorts for sex appeal, they're wearing them to maximize their chances of taking gold.

4 hours ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I suspect it's hard to demande to your coach and outfit company to change that. People generally don't want change. "If you won't wear the outfit we have you, INSERT NAME can very easily take your place'
Probably some more push from sponsors these days too.
