Next time try it with potato "crowns" / flat tots. Nontraditional, but it shifts the balance of soft to crunchy potato (and less carbs, making it just a touch easier on the diabetic in my house)
I would eat the hell out of that... and then would either have diarrhea for days or not shit for a week, and I'm not even sure which, but it can't be worth it.
This looks fine. It's hefty but not too much. I might not eat every morsel of cheese considering it's such a filling dish. I am one of those "such a thing as too much cheese people."
It depends on the cheese type, there are some they are only really enjoyable in moderation. When they have a strong flavour, so eating too much blows out your taste buds so it's not nice anymore.
Well I don't know what past me got caught up about because turkey bacon sounds awesome. I think I said in some other comment I always think about this video I saw with short rib tater tot hot dish that was "I'm about to lick my screen" good. I set the bar too high because I always remember how good that looked
The thing that hurts me about this picture is the pan. It's awesome, but that's like only 2 servings. Gotta bust out the giant 11x15 pyrex pan for the tater tot hotdish!
Never thought to try and make this in a cast iron skillet. Does it add any flavor? I've cooked a lot of bacon and steaks in my cast iron pan, hope the seasoning would impart a little bit of that. Also no such thing as overdoing it on the cheese.
CI shouldn't impart any flavor if you keep them cleaned and seasoned. I use my ci for frying, baking, stews, etc. Would never make soup or straight-up boil water in cast iron.
No, but I had a case of heat exhaustion in September. I am in Texas, 104 degrees that day and we went to eat lunch across the road. After eating I could not cool off, thought I was having a fucking heart attack. Couldn't talk, shaking like mad, sweating, couldn't even type on my keyboard to ask for help in Teams. Luckily a co-worker walked by and I asked him to call 911. Paramedics arrived, heart rate was 150 bpm, spent an hour in the ER with fluids and felt so much better afterwards.
Apple cider vinegar with mother every day for a year helped me with that shit. im 40 and had it bad. I mean i cut out a lot of salt and sugar but it helped with other stupid foods I eat
I always like these holiday Abominations that people put together. My wife's got this one called wife saver. Layers of white bread missing the crust ham good cheddar cheese and then about 10 eggs mixed with a bit of milk chopped up green pepper and onions. And you season the milk with a bit of Worcestershire sauce
If your oven has a broiler(and most electric ones these days do) let it sit under than for a couple of minutes(no more than like, 5 probably) and you'll get a really golden brown crust on top.
one day i hope to own my very 1st one in my life so i can attempt a "deep dish pizza" that you need this iron cast pans to make (always wanted to try that pizza but they don't make it in my country, so only option is self made at home)
Corn clashes with it imo, in every way too. It's too visually bright and stands out, and the crunch and sweet are so distinct they stand out. Imo corn doesn't work for this recipe but it's popular because a lotta people disagree!
Hmm... I'm not picky but right now I would want corn and probably add some peas. Green beans are so fucking good if they're well made though. And I always remember this cooking video where somebody made short rib tater tot hotdish so I wanna fancy up the meat just a little :) as far as the soup, if you don't get Campbell's, we drive you out to the middle of nowhere with nothing but a light sweater and an ice scraper and we tells ya, if you make it back we'll forgive ya
Hahaha I love that last sentence. I was born and raised here so that's my normal winter attire but my in laws are from Ohio and anything under 45 is "freezing".
I usually opt for corn. When I was growing up my parents must have bought the can of green beans that came with a "now with more stems!" label and that just made the whole hotdish suck when you found one. So, corn was the answer and it just stuck with me.
No they put hot dish in parentheses. I think we can forgive because by far the more common word for this TYPE of dish is casserole. We're kinda the weird ones on this... even though guys, it makes sense because it comes in a hot dish.
...Although wait if you serve it in a skillet... it is no longer hot dish since it's not being served in a baking dish.
It's as delicious as one! I ain't a chef so if you're asking officially, idk. I am from Minnesota though so I'm dubbing it an honorary hotdish if it ain't already one
Oh ya you betcha. Imagine it's like a shepherds pie (well technically cottage pie since most hot dish uses beef). you just got inside from shoveling snow, and somebody hands you a shepherds pie... something warm with a lot of carbs and almost stew-like... get the appeal? It's a one dish no effort comfort food
Our family recipe.... Press ground beef in bottom, layer of frozen peas (or veg of choice), dallop and 'spread' cream of mushroom soup, layer with tots, bake about 350 for an hour ish, top with cheese and let sit in oven until melted.... Serve. Vary recipe as your preference see fit.
Hotdish is one of those things where everyone (and their Grandma) makes it differently. There are more variations than there are lakes in Minnesota. Google knows all, friend.
Layer in a pan: Ground beef, cooked, crumbled. Drain fat. Season meat to your liking Add a layer of any veggie of your choosing Spread a layer of cream of mushroom soup Next, a layer of Shreded Cheddar Cheese Next, a layer of Frozen Tater Tots Finally, More Shredded Cheddar Cheese Bake 425ā°F. 35-40 min. There are many like it, but this one is mine. Want a different variation? Make it your own. Or Google it. It ain't difficult.
yeah but there's usually the "basic foundation" to pretty much all recipes then it varies out of that foundation on each ones personal tastes, also are "tater tots" kinda like mini rosti things the ones without cheese, i think they also call em hashbrowns or something like that? i always wanted to do something similar with potato croquettes & cheese some seasonings & toss into an oven & bake like i bake my rosti with cheese for 30 mins on 200C and then devour it like it's my last meal.
Here in the US, the country is so large that many food items are pre-made and pre-packahed and frozen for mainly 2 reasons. 1. Convenience or 2. To allow the item to maintain freshness during distribution. Tater tots are shredded potatoes that are formed into a bite sized finger food. Hashbrowns are simply shredded or diced potatoes that are frozen.
yeah we mostly don't have all this awesome stuff here, even our mcdonalds doesn't have hashbrowns so let that sink in xD i gotta google up most of the stuff & see if it's a possible thing for me to make myself, but yeah i'll pan fry my rosti 1st a bit & then put it into the oven with cheese on top to get this similar food just wont be in small tater tots shape but a large pie rosti shape, should still come out in similar flavor, ty :)
Yes. There's two kinds of hash browns in the US. Had to look up rosti but that's the first kind, grated potato, pan fried. The second, a grated mixture formed into shapes usually with the help of like corn starch or chemicals or something, it's the fast food hashbrown, you deep fry it. The most common shapes would be the tot, little cylinders, or a thin triangular patty like what McDonald's does, or just a burger-looking disk. I feel like an Italian explaining pasta shapes
yeah i figured it's gonna be along this lines, though i'll have to google up corn starch to see if i can figure out what that would be in my country if it's even something i can get (yeah we lack like 80% of what USA stores sell... so this is gonna be a fun hunt), ty for the reply, will probably for now just make a giant rosti by pan frying it 1st & then placing it into a baking plate, add cheese on top & put it into an oven to finish it off, should come out similar just in a large pie shape ^^

The one good thing to come out of the 2024 election was learning Governor Walz's turkey tot hotdish recipe.
