Much to management's surprise, my workplace voted to unionize about a year ago. Lawyers got involved. Turnover ensued. Negotiations were long and heated. But we finally have an agreement. Here's what we won:

This seems pretty standard, so why the hype? Labor law doesn't generally apply to public sector (gov't) employees. We aren't guaranteed rest periods unless they're in the contract. We don't get every Federal or State holiday off either...but now we get double time if we have to work them.

This is HUGE! The employer covers full premiums for employees (and dependents) for dental, vision, and health. They chose a mid-tier provider in our area that 90% of our employees already have. Those enrolled in a different plan can keep it and only pay the difference.

Unless your supervisor gives you a "less than meets standards" performance review before the anniversary or your hire date or you've already topped out your job's classification steps, 5% automatic salary increase.

We haven't had raises or Cost of Living Adjustments since 2024. This contract gets us over 4% now, plus annual increases at the fiscal year tied to ECI (which is generally higher than CPI). So another 2-5% come July.

Another big win. Employer will make a one time contribution to a RHSA equal to $6.5k per year retroactive to employees' respective hire dates. Employer will continue contributions of $200 per future pay period. The employee gets to choose how the funds are invested AND take the whole thing with them upon separation...whether they retire, quit, or get fired.

This is entirely separate from other retirement benefits. Contributions to 401/457 plans stay the same.

Over $3,000/year in reimbursement for relevant coursework. I already have a degree, but I might go back to school for additional certifications. Talked to my boss already—she's in favor.

Oh, and if you speak a second language you're eligible for an extra 2% to your base wage. Soy la única persona en la oficina que habla español.

We already had separate leave categories for PTO. Sick time isn't changing but now I get a full 3 weeks of vacation every year on top of the 115 hours I already have banked. And with flexible scheduling I could have Fridays off regularly if I go 9/80 or 4/10.

So I have a passport...and money...and time! Where should I go? Seriously, I'm open to suggestion.

I pay my taxes. I give you the most powerful chess piece.

Please be a thoughtful human and enjoy your day!

In South Africa public sectors labour unions are some of the strongest around. May your union continue to grow from strength to strength!

What is a 9/80 4/10?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sheduling options where you work 80 hours over 9 days or work 10hr shifts over 4 days. With 9/80 you get a three day weekend every other week, and with 4/10 every weekend is three days.

Fully paid insurance by employer is a huge benefit in the US. My part-time job covers my immediate family on health, dental, & vision 100%. No monthly or deductible costs at all on me. It's the only reason I still keep my PT job.

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

S lot of places will do a split, but fully paid everything is soo rare. I'm amazed a PT job would offer that.

I heard that Unions are bad for the workers - Any Republican

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That's why our success was surprising to me. Most of my coworkers are on the republican/libertarian side of things.

Congratulations! Great job! That's how it's done!

Your win is a win for everyone, whether unionized or not. If more of us have decent basic benefits like this, ALL employers have to do better to compete for employees. Well done, from a member of ATU 1005.

Thank you. I was surprised by the initial numbers—over 90% of employees were on board. And based on the agreement, only 7 employees won't be members—4 of whom can't on account of conflicting interests.

Japan is highest on my list currently but Australia was so cool and good for you guys! Congrats!

Thanks, Miss Yoda! I'm honestly surprised we got as much as we did. Not everyone is satisfied (mgt especially), but I'm doing a happy dance tonight.

Dance away my friend. You earned it

Hell yeah! I just voted last weekend and ratified my new contract for another 4 years. Proud union!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awesome for you, bro! A couple of years ago my department talked and organized and got in the talks with teamsters to unionize. People were mysteriously let go. It didn't happen. Consolidated bargaining needs to be protected!

Come to Nordics. See from where these benefits stems from. Now, next step is to get unlimited sickdays. Btw, we don't have dental care, that needs to be paid "fully". But it is like, if you need to patch up holes, filling, cost like $80. Completelly renew a crown is something like 500-1000, depending if the root needs an implant surgery or not. I personally have language add-on too. 5% each. As customer service, I have customers that speak Finnish, Swedish, English and German. So +15% for extra

Only Nordic country I've been fortunate enough to visit thus far is Iceland and I'd go back in a heartbeat. My dad had a Finnish pen pal for decades, but they've not met in person... maybe I'll fix that.

Well, welcome to Finland, the winter Funland! I live here. at the Arctic circle, weird winter, almost no snow, only a foot or 1.5 -> 40cm and -30C. A view from my 8.30AM backyard just now!

And yes, all of these benefits are made possible olny by Unionizing 100 years ago!

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Been working a union job last 15 years. It’s been glorious.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1st time I'll be covered by one but I'm cautiously optimistic. Also, +1 for username (I feel like there's a story behind it).

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great news! So where do you wanna go?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty open. I've not yet been to S. America, Africa, or Asia but I'd love to go back to New Zealand or Iceland. Chile or Argentina could be nice. Any suggestions?

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I very much liked the Azores islands . Beautiful place

No maternity leave?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That issue wasn't addressed in this round, but it's on the list of policies to revise. We currently get 12 weeks of unpaid time off under FMLA, but people usually cash out sick/vacation time. It wasn't high on the priority list because there's only one current employee it might apply to (me).

I'm single and not convinced kids are a good idea *gestures broadly at everything*, but it is something that needs to be amended...we just had some bigger collective fish to fry first.

Yup—right up there with libraries and firefighters. I was privileged to a well-rounded education— I still have my copy of Thompson's Rise of the English Working Class and a textbook on the anthropology of capitalism somewhere.

The anthropolgy of capitalism? Do tell.

15 minute breaks aren't standard?? I thought that was the law!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, labor law in my state mandates 10min breaks but it only applies to private sector employees. Public/government employees are not guaranteed those benefits unless it is specified in their respective contracts. Public employees are also largely unable to sue their employers for other labor law violations (like lost wages).

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Heard. Hate you had to fight for 15 minutes.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me too. The other nice thing is that we can now take time off in 15min increments. It was previously 30min, so if you had a Dr's appt that took 40mins you'd have to burn an entire hour's leave.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Suppose I'll add I'm very pro union. My grandpa was a mine inspector. We care about unions. Unions keep people alive. I'm glad you have a good union. I hate anti-union talk. I hate this economy. The fucking apathy.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, this is great...but my mind boggles at the fact you're a public sector worker!

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Oh? Might I ask why that's surprising? I've done a number of other things, too, but I'm pragmatic enough that this suits well enough...for now. Also +1 for your username, I'd love a cuppa.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

European experience and Australia to, public sector are the most unionised workforce. Think of it as leading by example.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Most gov't employees in my state are unionized, but not all. And the current administration has disbanded many federal unions (or tried to). I'm in a red spot in a blue state and former employees dissolved the previous union 20+ years ago. From then until now the terms have been negotiated "in good faith" directly between our gen. manager and one employee from each dept. Now we have actaul advocates with legal expertise on our side.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The fact your job did not GUARANTEE most of these is absurd! I’m so happy for you and the Unionization!! v

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I knew things had to change when literally every employee signed a no-confidence statement against our old GM. In my experience, private sector offers more $, public offers better stability/long-term benefits, and non-profit was the most personally fulfilling. Now if only I could combine the best of each.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I work private and I agree. Benefits are not amazing, but its better than nothing. And I’m so blessed than I’m in a job that has somewhat long term security? At least, I won’t get replaced by a robot for weather consultation services….yet!

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

AI hasn't figured out geography just yet either! The extra certs I'm considering are GIS/data science adjacent. Plan is to stay long enough to get those, vest in the pension system in 2 years, & then...who knows?

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ooo that’s interesting!! I dabbled in GIS in college (like it was a section in a course I took for an elective). But that all is pretty neat. I think geography is cool. Lots of similarities with weather (elevation contour lines are similar to pressure isobars on a map, pressure troughs and ridges like actual ridges and valleys, etc)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not just similar, geo & weather are interdependent. I've watched storms materialize over volcanoes, desserts transform in flash floods, etc. Nature puts on some pretty nifty shows if you stop long enough to pay attention...they're doubly cool if you understand the forces at play.

Congrats on the union win. If you’re in the US come to Canada. Our dollar is weak at the moment and you will get a ton of value out of it.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you! Some of my favorite humans are Canadian. Sorry about the madness from DC. My last holiday was in NS—thoroughly enjoyed it— been to BC 5 or 6 times. Haven't spent much time in AL but if like to visit some of the parks. ON & QC are still on my list. Any specific recommendations?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you come to Alberta you gotta hit Banff, lake Louise and Jasper. The drive from lake Louise to Jasper is spectacular, winter or summer. Calgary is where I am. Great city. Beautiful prairie sunrises and amazing mountain sunsets. Vancouver and Vancouver island are also amazing.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Banff and Jasper have been on my list for a long time. I haven't been to Calgary since the 90s, but I do remember the sunsets.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And there is always things to do in the parks. We did 2 hikes in the last couple weeks with ice cleats on. There is beauty and hidden treasures everywhere every season around here.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've got good winter hiking books and ice cleats, but I don't think it's feasible this winter. I'm looking more toward late spring or autumn (summer tends to be too peopley for my liking).
