I think you dwell in some very wrong echo chamber if your observed percentage of idiots (conspiracy theorists in this case) is that high. Or, maybe, your criteria are a bit off?
I wasnt referring to 97% of people are conspiracy theorists. I am saying 97% of people are stupid. There isnt anything wrong with being stupid, unless it affects other people. Hence... gestures broadly
So it is about criteria. You see, intelligence, like many other things, is distributed normally among people. It would be reasonable to name people within one sigma "average". That is 68%, roughly 2/3. One sigma above that would be "smart" and below that "stupid". Both are about 13% or 1/7. Above and beyond two sigma would be "genius" and "idiots". These are about 2%. Naming everyone below top 3% of the population stupid might be tempting, but that is not what the word means, frankly.
