This is the kinda shit my uncle has been doing for 40 years. "What's new, unc?" "I'm practicing a technique that kills in the drawing of the sword." "Cool cool cool..."
As a kid I thought Iaido looked kind of lame because it was just sitting and then standing and drawing a sword and then swinging it once and sitting back down and sheathing it.
But now I wish I could train. Seems almost like moving meditation.
Drawing, slashing, and re-sheathing. From every position and against every configuration of enemies (e.g., one in front of you and another one coming up from behind). Trains muscle memory for every imaginable scenario.
So I talked to a US Attorney one time. I asked if he could get a concealed carry permit in any state. He said he could even get one to carry on a plane. He said a friend of his had one. TSA was ok with the guys permit to have a handgun. But they were not going to let him carry his pocket knife. I guess the guy told them. Don't you think I would use the gun to cause trouble before the knife.
I think your friend was exaggerating to brag. Or his friend lied to him, and he assumed he could meet the same standard.
There is no civilian carry on the cabin, under any kind of permit. You can get an exemption if you are sworn law enforcement, on active duty with an operational need, and you complete training on flying armed.
There are also Air Marshalls (who also do paperwork before every armed flight) and FFDO programs, but there isn't a permit that once obtained, clears you forever.
You just lean over the person next to you to stretch your leg under the seat in front of the other person next to you. You lift your butt gently, arching your back a bit to reach into your pocket. Then you can continue your obnoxious gum chewing with a new, more intense flavour gum.
Commenters are underestimating how difficult it is to draw a samurai sword in a small space. This technique had to be practised over and over to do cleanly. Often there were 'peace talks' which resulted in more than words. Talks were often held in very tight spaces because 'then it's impossible to draw a sword'.... but this guy proves it's still very well possible to kill.
Yeah you'd sit toe to toe, that's also why he's using the unusual sitting rather than the normal kneeling style posture.
It's not so much that it's impossible to do it as it's impossible to do the Iado draw-strikes, you start pulling a sword like this and everyone can react in time to stop you or defend themselves.
A very small reach advantage, further mitigated by the fact that a trained swordsman on the lookout for an attack would react to you moving to draw your sword and already have theirs drawn and inserted into your guts, since they were able to simultaneously draw and close the distance between you while you were drawing yours.
From what I can see it;s a combination of techniques. Sayabiki and Nenbutsu Nuki even though that is done with a short sword. Iaijutsu as you said, but also Battojutsu. It's amazing to see if you held one of those swords once. I only held a wooden sword and just drawing it was stupid difficult when the sheeth was attached to the clothing. It's a looooong draw.
If you have enough room you can pull the scabbard half out of your belt and then push it back into the belt while drawing, which is a lot easier. But you should be able to draw relatively comfortably either way unless the blade is too long for you. Katanas came in different length for people of different sizes.

Depends on the airline, and seat class. More room seat on Delta? Maybe. Basic seat on Spirit? I don't think I can safely sneeze.
