I’d attribute a lot of the loss of viewership to the killing of Joel. But for those of us who played the games and knew it was coming, they lost us by being completely unfaithful to the game particularly with Ellie’s response both physically and emotionally to it. I do not blame Bella, I blame writing and directing. They absolutely fucked her and that character. Hopefully they learn and fix it

In short Ellie is supposed to go essentially John wick mode. Does things that’s scares herself, is blinded by revenge and hatred, is very cold to everyone around her, ect. And in the show she’s like ditzy, clueless, nice, making jokes, ect.

That's not even getting into the fact that the two seasons are based on games that were drastically differently received by the audience. Part 1 is near universally praised, while Part 2 was heavily divisive with many fans incredibly salty that Joel was replaced as the main character with a pair of women and the story has a narrative about vengeance being toxic & making it clear that Joel wasn't a good guy in the previous game (despite the first game repeatedly stating & showing that he wasn't).

Have their auditions ever been made public? I'm assuming Cailee Spaeny is also a good actress but maybe the person they went with just had a much better audition and better chemistry with Pedro Pascal and/or director.

It definitely didn't help that Cailee was in a bunch of mediocre to outright bad movies back when the casting was being done & wasn't even nominated for any awards until after the first season aired (all of the ones she has gotten were for a single movie that came out 8 months after season 1 of TLOU aired) while Bella stole the show in her few scenes in Game of Thrones & was sitting on 9 nominations/awards before TLOU.
Star power matters more than fitting the source material in Hollywood.
