I thought I’d share some of my favorite educational Youtubers and my favorite videos from them. All these videos blew my mind in one way or another. Starting with...
Vsauce
The guy who got me into educational Youtube. He excitedly talks about all sorts of subjects, constantly flowing from tangent to tangent in way that always makes me laugh.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3teflb1QNN4
Veritasium
Science, mostly physics, but also math, statistics, psychology, engineering, too many subjects to name. He’s got to be my favorite Youtube educator, and I won’t miss a video. He’s one of the biggest names out there, with production effort through the roof. I link this video because it completely changed my perspective on electromagnetism. It also sparked criticism, but he embraced it perfectly in a follow-up video that I also totally recommend. That's how you do science.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHIhgxav9LY
Tom scott
The legend. He’s always traveling around to show you something awesome and obscure with fantastic witty delivery. This is my favorite one explaining sound of TV shows and advertisements, and he slips in the most creative sponsored ad I’ve ever seen.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Is_wu0VRIqQ
Steve Mould
Technology. If you like Tom Scott, you’ll like Steve Mould. He likes to cover the extremely fascinating science behind why things work. It was hard to choose one, but this one on piezoelectrics really stuck with me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcJXA8IqYl8
Up and Atom
Math. Lots of math. And physics and some engineering. Watch this one on nuclear fusion if you want to feel better about the future (it does still manage your expectations... yes, we’re still a long way away from fusion.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5RxUW7VC-A
Practical Engineering
Civil Engineering. Covers a lot of construction mega-projects, the design of everyday public infrastructure, and principles of civil engineering. Here’s an episode he did with Up and Atom on the same nuclear fusion reactor. The design that goes into just the structure surrounding the reactor is insane.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD3dMzv1vIQ
Science Asylum
Physics. Great entertaining delivery on complex subjects with some nerdy humor. This is my favorite video, and the best video on a topic I don’t think we think about enough: how were all the elements made? Why does chemistry exist? I’ve watched it multiple times to really sink it in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lInXZ6I3u_I
PBS SpaceTime
Highly complex theoretical physics. If you want to dig into quantum mechanics, this is the best place to go, though I often struggle to keep up. This video is a lot easier to understand, and it totally changed the way I think about matter.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=184eP_KuXek
ScienceClic English
Physics. Speaking of complex topics, I put this video on here, not because I watch this channel a lot, but because this video FINALLY made me understand general relativity. I guess after reading/watching so many explanations, this was the one that worked for my brain, so maybe it’ll work for you too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qQheJn-FHc
Fermilab
Physics. He gives fantastic, clear explanations of more complex topics. This one is on refraction. I always was confused about how light apparently slows down in air/glass/water, but photons are massless and should travel at the speed of light.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUjt36SD3h8
Arvin Ash
Physics. His videos are very similar to Fermilab. He’s a professor professoring to you in a very clear way. There are too many good videos to choose from.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PbcR8SRq0E
Anton Petrov
Astronomy, mostly, but also covers biology, and a lot of emerging science. When choosing a video from this guy I didn’t realize how many freaking videos he makes. This one, nevertheless, I think stands out because I didn’t realize our solar system was unique.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Tju7EaSfmM
Astrum
Astronomy. He makes a lot of videos on the planets and other celestial bodies, covering their unique features with flowery language instead of direct scientific language. Good if you just want to relax and reminisce about the times you watched Nova. Here’s quite an interesting video on how difficult orbital mechanics make it to travel to Mercury.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MwGXzKjFfY
Be Smart
A PBS channel, and they cover all sorts of miscellaneous things. This is a great one on how a need for better naval navigation led to the invention of accurate clocks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1o3_w0Ypb78
SciShow
A PBS channel that covers about every science topic you can imagine. Also they have Hank Green. Out of all their videos, this one really stuck with me. It’s insane to think about how much the moon contributes to our planet being habitable.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rEiywnAra0
Crash Course
Just about everything. I chose a history video. It’s got John Green, so that’s nice.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E9WU9TGrec&list=PL8dPuuaLjXtMwmepBjTSG593eG7ObzO7s
History Matters
History. While I choose Youtubers who don’t pad their videos, this one takes the cake. Each video is a 3 min speedrun on a topic, filled with hilarious animations.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1rzd3eG7ps
Rob Words
Linguistics. One day I learned that Haitian Creole was made from a mix of languages, and thought that was so fascinating. But then I learned that this happens to every language, especially English. It’s actually more French and Latin than it is English. In fact, our alphabet is Latin, but it didn't used to be. Rob Words dives into the history of language and it’s super cool.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4npuVmGxXuk
Stephan Milo
Anthropology. He makes long videos of him talking and reviewing evidence of prehistoric peoples. This is my favorite episode about genetic evidence of contact between polynesians and native South Americans.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycRcWK7pMoM
Geology Hub
Geology. His channel looks at obscure geologic features on the Earth and explains how they formed. The videos are quick and to the point.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1IpW85EZkk
Atlas Pro
Geography. The channel examines obscure places, how they came to be the way they are, and how geography can drive where people and animals live. The video that blew my mind the most is this one, that covers the origin of different fruits. It’s amazing that nearly none of the food we eat looks like it did when we were hunter gatherers; humans deliberately bred it, and a LOT of this breeding happened in Mesopotamia.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu6Y-gTZtzc
Howtown
A channel dedicated to explaining how we know stuff in science. I’m forever fascinated with plate tectonics, and this my favorite video of theirs explaining the evidence of how we know where the continents used to be located. Also check out their video on zircon dating; it’s how we know how old rocks are.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1hOdm0RJlY
PBS Eons
Another PBS show, dedicated to geology, anthropology, acheology, and the origin of life. There are so many videos to choose from, but this one about how blood evolved is truly fascinating.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdjN4ddnl2E
Chubbyemu
A doctor covers an obscure medical case in each episode, usually relating to toxicology. He throws in some hilarious actors and catch phrases to make it entertaining while at the same time educational.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmibYliBOsE&t=5s
Artem Kirsanov
Advanced neuroscience. Pretty cool stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV-EMA5g288
Kurzgesagt
Physics, astronomy, biology, weirdness. Their videos on physics and biology are great, but they started dabbling in videos that are way more speculative than informative, and that’s not really my thing. Nevertheless, this video did blow my mind: why is the sky black at night? This is where I learned about the cosmic event horizon at causes the edge to our observable universe.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzkD5SeuwzM
Nilered / Nileblue
Chemistry. This guy has two channels where he makes things with chemistry... like taking the polystyrene from styrofoam cups to make the synthetic flavor of cinnamon... because why not. I have no idea how he affords all his lab equipment. His videos are long and fun, and he shows you every step of experimentation. Here he is making aerogel, and I put this on here because you actually get to SEE a supercritical fluid. It’s incredible.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0HfmYBlF8g
Reactions
Chemistry. They go in depth into the chemical reactions of our modern life. They also made the best explanation of greenhouse gases that I’ve seen so far.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cimZGu5GadQ
Stated Clearly
Biology. This channel puts a lot of focus into the origin of life.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrEVw_jeeWU
Clockwork
Biochemistry. PBS Spacetime gets a reputation for covering extremely complex stuff, but I think this one might have it beat. It goes over the exact chemical pathways that make life function with amazing animations. My special brand of neurodivergence requires me to understand every step of a given process, even knowing that I’ll forget the details immediately afterword. If that sounds like you, then you might enjoy watching the science of cell division, and what it has to do with aging.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmm81lLhvUY
There are many more great Youtubers out there, so obviously I missed some of your favorites. These are just mine. Cheers!
Rivalyn
My favourite thing about Steve Mould is how the chain fountain effect got named after him because he had an internet dispute with someone and exhaustively studied the phenomenon.
DrJSJ
Lindsay Nikole for fossils and modern animals, miniminuteman for archeology and conspiracy debunking (googledebunkers for the win)
Hmuda
Anything from Brady Haran, where he talks to scientists/professors in all sorts of subjects, be it Maths, Astronomy, Chemistry, etc:

Isaac Arthur is a good science and futurism channel that discusses concepts about life and science in the future.
dustygamedev
Dr. Becky if you're interested in space news
alcaray
I was going to mention her. Though I go kinda crosseyed whenever she explains spectroscopy. It comes up a lot.
ElecTech
ElectroBOOM if you want a bit of humour as well.
proxyinitiative
Action Lab is the best straight to the point and also entertaining
Endocrom
Comet260
SEN-SOR.
WellWellWellLookWhoItIs
I get a very creepy vibe from Science Asylum, and think Vsauce’s presentation style is obnoxious. Good list otherwise. Definitely recommend adding Dr. Becky.

Missing Answers with Joe and Star Talk. So much great Sci/Tech Youtube content. Thanks for the post.

I love Joe.

On the topic of math, Numberphile and Matt Parker are must-watches.
Zeterai
On a more historical note, I'd like to suggest Tasting History with Max Miller https://www.youtube.com/@TastingHistory, which recreates recipes from all across the world while also giving historical context to them, and the venerable Townsends, which is focused more on the 18th century in North America and Europe https://www.youtube.com/@townsends.
Quite fond of Lindybeige as well, a lot of interesting facts and stories about historical combat and warfare. https://www.youtube.com/@lindybeige
bigboneded

Gutsick Gibbon. A channel centered in evolution, primates, paleontology, has probably one of my favorites videos about extinction and lessons to learn about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxTO2w0fbB4
Trey the explainer. A channel centered about history, cryptids, biology and paleontology. I recommend a collection of Lost Books you will never read (probably) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fcb2oLSb7Cs
Fall of Civilizations. Mongols -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyqS9V7yHQA

Gutsick and Forrest Valkai are both great
DickTipPapercut
Gutsick gibbon is the best. Forrest valkai also a wildly understandable science educator.

Professor Dave may not be flashy, but man you can learn a hell of a lot on his channel
mattrixk
Forrest is my favourite
Neednoggle
If you enjoy Practical Engineering, I'd suggest adding Real Engineering to your list. Especially if you're into aircraft.
Banana369
On a similar topic, Engineering with Rosie. Really good on renewable energy related engineering, but also wider engineering subjects. https://youtube.com/@engineeringwithrosie
Keairan
Milo Rossi's Miniminutemen is an excellent channel, too. Great stuff, and he makes corrections when he makes mistakes. https://www.youtube.com/@miniminuteman773
OPlinko
Oh, I see we have some googledebunkers among us.
Efreeti
I'm now certifiably googledebunkers. Treatment starts tomorrow, wish me luck.
Zeterai
One of the better conspiracy debunking channels out there. Accurate facts and an excoriating wit pair beautifully.
tuffytaff
I'd like to add @drBecky to the list, she's an astrophysicist with many great youtube videos :)
Rogerwilco1974
#2 This might be a very creative channel but their employment practices are fucking horseshït. They pay their editors not by the amount of work they do but by the length of the finished film, so whether it takes you 1 week to make or 4, you get paid the same. And, if that isn't bad enough, the rate per minute is below minimum wage.
MeezieGirl
Can you provide a link/references for this claim? This makes me very sad...
Rogerwilco1974
It happened to me. I don't really want to dox myself by providing proof, but if you look up "Electrify Video Partners" jobs on LinkedIn. They are ALWAYS advertising for editors.
electronicbovine
Gotta add explosions & fire / extractions & ire, and maybe the thought emporium
Snooj
Captain Disillusion. Deconstructs fake videos using top-tier video editing knowledge. Also puts out short explanation videos. Great dude.
JinButOnHisPhone
On the back of this - corridor crew's VFX Artists React and Stuntmen & Women React are fantastic, shame they started as "reaction" videos as it makes them sound like dumb youtube dross which they absolutely are not. Oh and Patrick H Willems for talk / analysis of movies in general.
MostAwesomeDan
Smarter every day
Explosions and Fire/explosions and Ire

TravelingTableTop
Solid pucs. Smarter every day isn't quite the same as the others tho.
kahlas
His other channel is Extractions&Ire not explosions and ire.

May I add Physics Girl? https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7DdEm33SyaTDtWYGO2CwdA
belindashort
Yes I was hoping somebody would have mentioned her
Noremakm
watching her recovery has been painful and inspiring.
Oban
It looked rough for a while. Really glad it seems that she is recovering
AnAverageBoxEnthusiast
what no ElectroBOOM???
kahlas
I was going to recommend him but he's more an electricity hyper focused guy. The others are all mostly generalists.
mikeatike
AnAverageBoxEnthusiast
gifs you can hear

WTF? No Ze Frank? I'm saddened by the incompleteness of this list. Also I highly recommend Explosions&Fire if you're into weird chemistry. He has another channel called Extractions&Ire that gets off the rails on a pretty regular basis. https://www.yonsAndIre">https://www.youtube.com/@">utube.co">nsAndIre">https://www.youtube.com/@ExtractionsAndIre https://www.youtube.com/@zefrank https://www.youtube.com/@ExplosionsAndFire/videos

Jerry fucked up
Zeterai
The True Facts videos may be satirical in nature, but they do actually have a surprising amount of accurate information. As far as ways to enjoy learning about something go, there are worse options.
kahlas
It's as implied, true facts. He just dosen't believe you need to be serious to learn things. In fact I bet people with short attention spans and no desire to learn things would learn things while watching just for the jokes.
ScrufyLookingNerfHerder
ZeFrank!!! Bebies
CalicoFeint
Dont see Smarter Every Day here. Definitely should check that channel out, incredibly informative and unique content.
DeKetsendeRechter
SEA is amazing and relaxing to learn about the universe!
ArnietheDonut
I met Destin before he started Smarter Every Day. He worked at Redstone and we met while I was working on a project where we were neutralizing RPGs with actively deployed nets. Destin helped us to work the timing to launch the RPG and then launch the net and to capture the event from multiple angles with high-speed video (25000-100000 frames). He was having a good time then and seems to be having a better time now!
DracoDan
Came to say this!
rockhydra
Looked for it as well. Also Veritasium is a great channel.
pandabearpancakes
Kyle Hill is really good!!
SnarfyMcSnarferson
Agree to disagree. When he's talking about nuclear, he talks in a respectful and serious manner. Everything else gives him license to act like a goofball, which many find irritating. You can be fun and educational without acting like a clown
ironymus
I even have to disagree with the topic of nuclear power generation. He is sweeping to many negative points of nuclear energy under the rug to be any viable source for educational videos of this kind.
SnarfyMcSnarferson
Well imo it's because the negatives on nuclear have been hyper focused on for the last 50 years.
mikeatike
And him and Veritasiium have way too much "paid promotion" content. I get that you won't get insider access if you don't say nice things about the places you visit, but come on guys, have a bit of integrity.

Angela Collier https://youtu.be/kya_LXa_y1E?si=L5hClqlja4NaUhhN

Whilst it looks like your dance card is full already, may I also suggest Map Man and Dan McClellan?
Map Men is funny and educational. Even their paid sponsor part is entertaining. Dan McClellan is a biblical scholar who tears down religious nutjobs with history and facts. I have learnt quite a bit from him.
belindashort
If OP is anything like me there's no such thing as too many science subscriptions because you just watch one video after another while you're working on something else to listen
Voxitronic
Map men is so good!!!

Try Deconstructionist Zone. Justin is incredible.

Tom Scott looks like a very young old man.
temotodochi
He quit making new videos over a year ago, but there's plenty in the backlog.

Balding and premature greying tends to do that. He's 40 but if it weren't for those two factors he'd look 24.

Isn't he also retired from this kind of content?

He hasn't put out a video since Jan 1 2024
GrizzlyFrank
He's been doing videos with his friends/comedy group, the Technical Difficulties
mikeatike
And Lateral.
cosonfused
He now hosts a sort of gameshow channel/Podcast. Lateral with Tom Scott. Other panelists are other (science) content creators, I've seen Alec from technology connections, Adam Savage, Ólafur Waage (with some jam in the side).
Wankbiscuit
Technology Connections is an interesting one, but rarely uploads.
Also HGmodernism for random animal facts.
Can't forget Octopus Lady. Love her stuff.
kmaestro
Perhaps you might also like Posy...
Wankbiscuit
Well I forgot about this, until Google decided to invade my life again and suggest the channel to me almost certainly based on this comment.
Not the first time that's happened.
mikeatike
GnowledgedGnome
Do you watch Technology Conextras as well?
badmojo23
I love Technology Connections!
Zeterai
Remember to leave a comment about what he got wrong.
It boosts engagement.
Enoan
Octopus Lady is waaay up there for me. Probably because she reminds me so much of one of my close friends who is also a marine scientist, but still her stuff is just great.
TJCizadlo
Technology Connections, Aging Wheels, and Jeff Geerling are the triumvirate of Midwestern tech(ish) youtube.
Buddy19134
A local was selling their prestine Figaro, I was heart broken I had no where to store it safely and securely or I would have made a very spur of the moment desision and driven that thing home
brownribbon
But through the magic of buying two of them, you can pretend there’s twice as many uploads!
KoRplussomeletters
He *does* have a second channel...
Callynd
Alec uploads a couple times a month and has the most nitty gritty explanations in the biz. He's also the funniest YouTuber I know of who's trying to teach you anything. Technology Connections is excellent.
brownribbon
Definitely not a couple times a month.
KaminoNeko
Once or twice a month isn't really that rare, for someone who doesn't have a writing staff. And, unlike VSauce and Tom Scott, Technology Connections IS still uploading.
stealthgunner385
VSauce and Tom Scott worked non-stop for a decade, they deserve a break. That said, I still get giddy every time I see more TechDif.
Wankbiscuit
Yeah, I suppose you're right there. I watch Youtube instead of tv, and just selfishly want to see more from him I guess. He is a total legend though. I just a moment ago learned that he donates excess earnings to local charities. Respect.
YouAreTheInsultMaster
Yeah he is just a super dude
Idsertian
And when he does upload, it's not out of the question that it's gonna be about dishwashers. Again.
Buddy19134
Naa dude! Heat pumps, the refrigeration cycle and the quest of perfect LED Christmas lights
DontKnowTheSource
He found his Christmas lights last year!! Made a whole video about it
Buddy19134
Not available in the UK though, so the hunt continues
LADOW
Heat pumps. It'll be about heat pumps. And totally awesome.
Septcanmat
If anyone ever invents a heat pump/dishwasher hybrid, Technology Connections is going to self-implode under the weight of their own script.
brownribbon
SUNBEAM RADIANT CONTROL TOASTERS!
RigelKent
And naturally I'll watch every single minute of it.
Callynd
At least he finally found the perfect LED Christmas lights.
Idsertian
True that.
