#12 all this just to add the new female custodes into warhammer? I get what the controversy is about.

I'm reminded of one scene from Amphibia, where they animated the frogs in detail.

Anyone that is okay with this no longer gets to use the phrase "video games are art"

You've made it clear that you don't care about art, you just want a Snapchat filter

The only thing I find amusing about this whole nauseating debacle is that slapping that slopfilter over the already super-outdated animations in bethesda games made them look even creepier than they were already. Only shows that humanity is yet to reach the bottom of the uncanny valley.

3 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

It's funny cause the comment section on the Starfield and other Bethesda titles part of the presentation was awash in positivity

Like, are we watching the same thing?! Bethesda have been shit at Facial Animations since Morrowind - but this looks WORSE - like Mass Effect 'facial exhaustion' Andromeda level worse

The one on the left at least matches the God damned ARTSTYLE - but the right one... ew! No!

3 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That example you gave doesn't really worse to me. The lips are weird, but the eyes and shadows look much better.

3 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Nah I agree. It's cool to hate it on atm. And fair enough it's AI slop, costs a fuckton to produce, eats energy and requires two cards to run atm. It also changes things in games without the devs' input. BUT, I do think the examples shown are generally better in the 'after' images and wouldn't mind trying them out in gameplay. They're overall sharper and more natural in terms of lighting and skintone. One problem though that was pointed out to me is that they're very asian/caucasian-coded. Ex.

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the image above, if you take it alone she could be mixed-race but on the right, it's 100% white. An actual black character was shown and in the 'after,' the lighting through his ear is peach/caucasian, among other things. They need to work on that.

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The lines look weird - the eyes look unfocused - the nose doesn't sit right and the background is bland and has lost it's focus

Moreover, it now no longer matches the rest of the games art style

Congrats

Your game is now more bland

Idk, I feel the one on the left, the eyes look soulless, while the right looks more human.

3 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

The right one looks like the left one but smoothed and smooshed and with its edges and styling all sandblasted off

Then it took a dip in the uncanny valley

If consumers would stop buying, they would probably stop developing those products

3 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Billionaires need to die, as do high level ceo's and board members.

Once you have enough money or power to insulate yourself from consequences, and banish anyone that disagrees with you, this is the shit that happens.

The dumbest fucking people on the planet thinking that all their stupid ideas are gold, because they're surrounded by ass-kissers and other morons, and they can keep throwing money at the bad ideas until they find a way to call them successful.

3 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It really upsets me too because the original reasons and designs for DLSS was to make modern games play better on older hardware. It was a good goal to have and initially worked so. Around DLSS 3 when they started adding Frame Gen and other nonsense was when they had lost the plot.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We're entering a digital tech dark age over this kind of shit, especially coupled with platform enshittification and the deplatforming of native software and operating systems

3 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Its not about thinking everyone loving it its about desensitizing the masses so itll be more successful the next time and the time after that so on and so forth

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, the recent press releases from the CEO being bigmad that people are calling this slop what it is - even claiming that if we didn't KNOW it was AI we'd love it ๐Ÿ˜†

https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/graphics-cards/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-says-dlss-5-backlash-is-completely-wrong-because-it-doesnt-change-the-artistic-control/

Jensen Huang has pretty much the same energy as Elon now and anything he's said has been pure AI shilling BS for years. His words carry no weight with anyone who has half a brain.

His public relations office can pay all these publishers to cover their new tech - but the publishers don't have to be positive about it

3 weeks ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I could forgive a mistake - we thought you'd like this! It's the doubling down and insisting that everyone else is wrong. Someone needs to remind the CEOs that the customer is always right in matters of taste

3 weeks ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

I can't forgive it because generative AI bas been strong armed into every creative and tech medium by force, on the back of threats disguised as articles or interviews that people who didn't adopt it would be left in the lurch. It's an entirely antagonistic campaign to shoehorn their bloated overpriced tech into the fundamental infrastructure of every industry they can. It really is a hostile takeover and should not be treated any other way.

3 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I don't think it looks awful, in terms of skin tones and sharpening. I DO think it's not a good idea in general to tamper with the basic appearance of things in other peoples' games. Like, yeah you can turn it off, but then you're without the upscaling/framegen or w/e else you may use from DLSS

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I hope they're not friends, or you need better ones.

3 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I honestly don't think that they even believed in it. I think that they're just so deep on the AI train at this point that they're desperately trying to shoehorn it into anything in order to justify their continued spending.

3 weeks ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

In an alternate universe nvidia didnt hop on the ai slop train, instead they invested in useful tech like photonics.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

PERSONALLY, I think they've been pushing AI for four+ years - have little to show for it - have an angry public and investors asking for a return on ALL THIS and wanted *something* to show at the event that *probably* wasn't ready for prime time AND MAY NOT EVER HAVE BEEN INTENDED TO BE SO

3 weeks ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Admittedly, part of that might just be cope.

3 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Right now, nVidia is one of the most blatantly-overvalued companies in history due to the AI bubble, so of course the CEO will do absolutely anything to keep the bubble growing and not popping. He, and the shareholders, know it will pop someday, but the longer before that happens, the more theyโ€™ll get to bank (and the worse the fallout will be for everyone else).

3 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Harkens back to the age old comment. "Do you guys not have phones?"

This is the exact problem when you put shareholders over customers. You drive the customers away, and then the shareholders value tanks anyway.

And as far as I can tell, despite that gigantic Diablo Immortal fiasco, despite how awful Blizzard was exposed to be, despite they sell cosmetics for 40-70 dollars (Overwatch), and despite completely ruined, botched projects like Warcraft Reforged, Blizzard seems to be doing just fine. Even Diablo Immortal was a financial success because nobody actually speaks with their wallet.

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Diablo Immortal was popular in China and S Korea, because like 70% of their gaming market is mobile. They also cater to whales by offering huge pay to win bonuses in the game, which as compared to the States, is standard fare. NA doesnt play well with P2W stuff, but in China and S Korea, its basically most games.

Since the game was designed for that audience, it was successful. They sold to scrubs with phones and more money than sense.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Except in gaming that never seems to work, and people have been making mediocre titles for over a decade that are a vast as an ocean and deep as a puddle that people keep shelling out 70-90 dollars for. Game companies have done all they can to raise prices, remove game borrowing/sharing/reselling/owning, give people less for more, and yet gamers are still happy to pay premium prices for whatever they get.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I dont really consider people who only play sports titles and EA trash to be gamers. Thats like exclusively playing Candy Crush and calling yourself a gamer. These companies make trash for trash consumers.

Dont forget that games like Expedition 33, BG3, Palworld, Peak, Hades and Silksong win awards and get tons of recognition and players. MEanwhile, CoD, Battlefield, Madden, Fifa, and of the 2k games...they get nothing. You know what Assassin's Creed Shadows won? Big, fat, nothing.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Funny thing is similar crap happened when DLSS came out. People making fun of it for how bad it was. Saying how nobody wants it, and now everyone wants it. The first iterations of things typically aren't really wanted because the internet loves to hate on everything while clearly not knowing the full picture. Like with DLSS5 the models don't look too great yet but the lighting and such is vastly superior.

3 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 16

Meh, still looks like fucking trash actually.

3 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Fucking trash running SHITTILY on two video cards (totalling some 7k to 8k dollars) to render crappy Instagram filters

The lighting has been blandified and the background literally shittened - the fuck are you talking about???

I don't want this - I don't want anything LIKE this - I will NEVER want anything like this

This doesn't improve gaming - it runs like ASS on two fucking 5090s for what???

To add Instagram filters??????

Fuck. This. Shit. With. A. Wire. Brush.

3 weeks ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

"blandified" and "shittened".. then all the unnecessary swearing yeah I'll definitely take you seriously. If you don't want it don't use it. I guarantee in a few years when you drop your moronic views on it you'll use it though. Though you'll likely still post about how much you hate it just to fit in with the other morons. Lemmings will be lemmings after all.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 12

Thanks for proving my point about being morons.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

I still don't like the original DLSS. I feel like a lot of companies are using it as a crutch to avoid making actual meaningful optimizations in the performance of their games. This tends to make the overall experience worse for anybody who doesn't want to or can't afford to use those products. As for whether or not it looks better, that's subjective. Personally, on a few of the comparisons they showed I think it actively looked worse.

3 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I mean, it does, it downscales then upscales the rendering - it *literally* makes it worse to make it better and because so many game engines run so differently - several games end up skipping the 'getting better' part

3 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Are you in game development? Also if you can't afford an RTX card... How poor are you? A 3070 is still good enough to play most games at medium settings. Don't buy into the exaggerating people that act like you need 5090s to play anything.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

So are you going to address my point or are you just going to stick with complaining and insulting whenever you get a little bit of pushback?

3 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I asked you a question to provide context to your point but you can't be bothered to answer which proves what I figured. You don't know anything about game development and just parrot the things you hear about DLSS being a "crutch" so devs don't optimize. What further proves this is how you immediately turtled up.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Don't mind them - they're, like, the only AI bro here right now (apart from the bots on downvote duty) and have been skipping through here picking fights with folks

Thought about blocking them myself - but it's kinda pathetic gargling the boots of CEOs who couldn't give a piss about you

A simple solution: treat every game that comes along with it as โ€œmade with AIโ€.

If it on a platform like Steam, report if it is not tagged as such. Spam their customer support with reports about it.

The power of reviewbombing is well proven. Tagbombing will be too. No marketing team would want their product to be even remotely associated with the word โ€œslobโ€.

3 weeks ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

Honestly, treat every game releasing in the future as โ€œmade with AIโ€. AI tools are quickly becoming common place, especially for more tedious tasks.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

This works. Clients and leadership don't want the bad press or scrutiny, and in the case of my company, have been told to replace ai visuals

5th generation of fakery to make graphics "more real" at the expense of framerates. which they solve with more fakery at the expense of smoothness.

3 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's a technique Nvidia is working on which, in their demo, used two 5090 GPUs. One to render the game, another to replace the rendered frame with generative AI "enhancement" slop. It makes every game look like generative AI video. "Good news" though, developers will be able to tune it.

3 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

What's really funny is that this technology is implied to be built off of the infrastructure of frame generation meaning it's going to have really bad input lag and in high motion the edges of the screen are going to look terrible. It's likely this technology will have a greater impact on the movie industry than anything else. 'cause it kind of already has.

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I threatened to stop buying Nvidia because of the predatory making confusion they intentionally create, and the insane costs. Then they started pushing fake frames because optimization is hard and lots of the optimization they can't fix because it's in the game engines and games which use them, but the cards are still more expensive and use even more power. Now genAI filters wasting even more power. Fuck Nvidia. Pop the bubble and die already.

3 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yes but also fuck game developers. There's just no optimization anymore

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

For a few years now graphics card companies have been too lazy to make better raster calculation cores, so instead they focussed on tech that just makes up whatever and shits it out to your monitor. DLSS5 is the Nvidia's latest version of that.

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's less being too lazy and more running into a technical limit, without reinventing the wheel, afaik. (It's basically impossible to miniaturize the current design further, if that is still the problem).

And also, more power isn't THAT useful. For one, you will barely see the difference anyways. We hit a point of diminishing returns in the past years. Which leads into the next problem. To make games that (constructively) use that power to create better graphics requires exponentially more >

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

work hours, hence the triple A dev studio size exploding from 20 guys to 500-1000 devs and the game developement time still increasing despite it. With the Covid miscalculation, where the investors and stock markets expected the video game industry to rapidly grow, only for it to kind of plateau, that is also something that is getting harder to pull off. It mostly seems the greater available power has just led to games being less optimized.

So what to play with a hypothetical 5000โ‚ฌ super >

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

graphics card? The game isn't going to be made that would make it justifyable.

With how it went, it was kind of inevitable that they would resort to AI to "solve" it. I thought it would happen on the game developement side first, but here we are. Now they invented AI slop filters for graphic cards, so you can make your AI slop Assassins Creed 27 look "better".

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nobody can afford NVidias top level 50 series cards (with costs believed to sore to between 2/5k for the elite models) and one of NVidias ideas to make people interested in these cards no one can afford - was to host a tech show where they showed off this new filter you can apply to games

Honestly it feels like the perfect example of the arrogance of AI bros that AI makes everything "better" that they're trying to use it to "improve" Resident Evil Requiem, a game that already looks immaculate...and the AI just makes it look worse.

3 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Even Starfield and older games look gross with it - shit as Bethesdas facial anims are, the one on the right just looks *off*

Even Mass Effect 'my face is tired' Andromeda looked less off putting

3 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

DLSS is Nvidia's proprietary upscaling technology that offloads processing of graphics to the special processing hardware in their latest graphics cards to be able to insert inferred frames between rendered frames to increase performance of high quality rendering. The tech is pretty decent but controversial in several ways because it increases latency and their latest version (DLSS5) has a very "AI" like look to it that many people don't really like.

3 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Deep Learning Super Sampling, and the 5th generation of it, more fake AI frames in games.

3 weeks ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

DLSS 2: Fancy upscaling that works surprisingly well
DLSS 3: Frame interpolation to artificially boost fps, slightly impair latency
DLSS 4: Yo dawg we heard you like Frame Gen, so we Gen your Gens
DLSS 5: Screw it. Just ask GPT to slop up what it thinks games might look like

3 weeks ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

While those are the main "features", all of them do also improve the upscaling part. Like how DLSS 4.5 manages to make RDR2 look "playable" at 137x76 pixels. https://youtu.be/DKCyk3CeUFY?t=300
That's why it's often a good idea to use DLSS-Updater to bump whatever version a game shipped with to the newest available.

Personally, I couldn't care less about framegen or slop textures, but DLSS upscaling is fantastic for essentially giving you performance free SSAA.

3 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And even dlss 2 has its fair share of problems, mainly, it makes devs (or at least, the boss behind them giving them less time) more sloppy. Why optimise for a good framerate if you can just โ€œfixโ€ it with framegeneration? And this only gets worse, with the latest one, why even bother making proper textures if the ai is going to hallucinate โ€œprettierโ€ ones anyway?

Even in the best scenarios, this is a slippery slope. More sloppily made games, more sloppy ai

3 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Think I turned on the DLSS 4 once just to see it run in a demo/benchmark (Monster Hunters Wild), yeah, it's kinda cool looking, but any competitive games have to turn that shit off.

3 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

-nod- it seems to take what DLSS3 was doing before - downscaling and then upscaling with minimal loss - and, somehow, downscales and then upscales what's already been processed

So the resulting image looks hinky as fuck with a lot of visual glitches

That'll be 1500 to 2000 dollars, please

I somehow knew that their only way forward out of the amount of human workhours needed vs. "Games need to look better and be bigger every year, but also make profit" trap would be AI. Not that I think that trap is a reasonable place to be in. But that's what the Hardware and Game Industry thinks they need to do.

3 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Nope. It does not increase performance. The DLSS5 demo they showed ran on TWO 5090 GPUs. It increases visual fidelity, after more or less discarding the actual render and replacing it with generative AI.

3 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Yes? Hence why I literally said that it does not increase performance at all, or did you miss that part? lol

From my understanding of the explanation, DLSS is supposed to help weaker systems run games they couldn't normally, but DLSS5 actively goes against that cause the showcase for it required a 5090.

TWO 5090s

Somewhere between 7k and 8k worth of cold hard cash JUST to maintain a shitty filter

Oh I missed that it required TWO of them. It is comically hilarious how NVIDIA does not understand how fucking incompetent that makes them look.

Or, more realistically, with them being the center of the AI bubble, they don't give a single shit about their gaming audience. They could stop stop selling GPUs to gamers entirely right now and end up actually making more money just because of how ridiculous the AI bubble is right now.

Part of the problem is this type of AI - it has no memory - it has no consistency - it can change from one frame to the next and requires *astronomical* amounts of memory and power to 'maintain' and there's no *real* way to fix it - simply mitigate it's failings as best you can

Which is hilarious when you consider there's a product known as a HUMAN BEING who can do ALL OF THAT with only some decent medical coverage, some take home pay, running water, food and a couple weeks vacation ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†

You need 2 5090 to do this shit. Jensen has lost his marbles.

I looked up the price to buy 2 RTX 5090... it turns out to be about $16,000 in my currency to apply Instagram "ai" filter over a video game.

nah. because nobody own cards anymore. you will be allocated monthly gaming minutes on their servers. you will own nothing and you WILL be happy.
or else.

Or else I'll just stick to my massive backlog and maybe some new indie titles? Most new big budget games aren't anything special, if not outright horrible, beyond their graphics anyway.

I think thatโ€™s a perfectly balanced and objective article, actually. I deal with paid media at my job and this is not it. Itโ€™s simply coverage of an announcement and the publicโ€™s initial response.

I was referring to his public relations firm paying to have all these interviews done so massively and so constantly - I apologize if it comes off like I'm slurring PCG

Your use of "buying" comes across like you think that PC Gamer was paid to make a positive article, but that appears to be neutral at worst. It's reporting what he said along with some skepticism and speculation about how it could work and some criticism of how it was demonstrated.

I was more referring to the flurry of press releases and amount of coverage they're paying for ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

None of that is free and it's hilarious how tone deaf and bumbling it's been

I apologize for it seeming like an insult, though

The point with this is that they don't want you to own GPU:s anymore, they want to make you *rent* their AI services for everyday gaming.

Yeah, well, if Ubisoft wasn't going to get me to rent their AAAA games - then I'm not gonna rent your yass filter ๐Ÿ˜†

Why do you think this is an example of that? This is still running locally.

3 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Locally with 2x RTX5090, normal people won't be buying $7000 worth of gpu's. They're trying to force people to rent their gaming services.

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just this early tech demo. The whole point of it is to do more with less.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it needs the whole other 5090 solely for that AI slop filter, it's not going to be working with any mid range gpus. Which is kind of a point of DLSS, you shouldn't need to use it with 2x damn $3500 cards.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They've explicitly said this is an early tech demo, with development targeting single RTX cards.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Provided you can afford the videocards neccesary for it.

3 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Which is true of every GPU advancement since... forever?

The point is this doesn't change the business model from ownership to subscription.

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Except when before had we seen such a massive spike in prices to accomodate a tech like this, that they'll try to force into every possible nook and cranny?

3 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're talking about pricing amount - this thread was about pricing model: buying vs subscription.

Top end cutting edge GPUs have always been crazy expensive. "Can it run Crysis" etc.
