Crabs are great problem solvers, so long as the solution to the problem is "Grab it and pull hard."

I've never seen the little bait holder thing. We always just tied the bait to the trap with twine.
hugemuffin
Same, one time I used a bit too much twine and the crab pulled the chicken free of the trap. It was okay as the crab came up with the bait.

you're talking about a creature which for hundreds of thousands of years had removed meat from shells, etc. just doing it's job.
I'll bet you're fun at parties...
Not when I start ranting about the ocean. ;) Especially the state of the coral reefs.
JustARandomStrangerOnTheInternet
1) yeah... but, also: there are countless examples of wild animals learning new behaviors directly from human hunting interactions.
2) there are also multiple examples of different types of monkeys teaching each other to use tools in the wild.
3) they are learning. and i find it exciting.
This isn't an ape though, let alone a mammal. It's basically a marine spider. It's just doing what it's hardwired to always do. Lol.

"Ring trap" Its attached to a string, once you think youve got one you yank on the string and it's caught. Source: I'm from Maryland.

I believe the net just sits on the bottom for a few hours. The crabs investigate the bait and the fisher pulls the net up
ThinMartin
Maybe they are supposed to just stay around the bait until someone gonna pull the net up?

It's called a hoop net. You just pull it up randomly and hope to catch 'em in the act.
MarioPoppins
That seems like there is probably a better way
JasonWaterfaIIs
You can ask them politely but translaters are expensive.
Yeah, amateur fishermen are limited to hoop nets in a lot of areas (U.S. at least) to protect the crab populations from over fishing.
Icantbebothered
This is what I use. Put fish guts or whatever in there, the crab goes inside, and can't get out. https://imgur.com/VqfrumL

In Texas we use chicken drumsticks with a mesh baggy over them, their claws get stuck in the mesh, you pull em to the surface and put [1[
Your net underneath them and retrieve. It's quick, effective and you can catch a few hundred in the morning and have a fry in the evening.[2
i always just tied a piece of chicken to a string and had the string set on a post.

Yes, I always felt the traps were cheating.
I always just accidentally catch them when I am reeling in a fish
