Just love the grin at the end!

Edit: Wow, first time FP: send me stuff (images or text) I can laugh about!

That is perfectly reasonable .

I love the HEMA posts I've been seeing on Imgur lately <3

The weird thing about playing with swords is that you don't REALLY learn that you shouldn't play with them until after you start.

Their body language in the 3rd panel says it all.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Epic grin.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Compeled" what? Spelled like that I read it as com'peeled'

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm a fencer. This is so true.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Such a weird leading statement she made, though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Finally a sport I can get interested in

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is that like broadsword fencing and where can I sign up

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck, that's why I started fencing in highschool!

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I miss fencing. Doctor says I can't risk head blows even with helmet due to retina damage.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ouch. I know how that feels, my friend. Lost sight in my right eye, had to drop out of foam fighting or risk losing the other one.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Switch to foil. The head is not a target.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used to do german longsword, sparring really isn't that dangerous (then again I was pretty shit at it).

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

All the fun of sword play without getting mutilated and killed +1

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Am in HEMA, can confirm wanting to play with swords. And spears and pollaxes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And shields, and ringen, and daggers and messers and...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice! Would really like to try it, but no such thing anywhere near me :(

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do you get involved with HEMA?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can always google to see if there are any clubs in your area. They don't usually require your own equipment.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

double confirmed, cap'n

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Such a shame ya can't really spar with pile axes unless you're in harness. Those things can damage the hell outta standard helmets.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Can confirm. My first fencing mask has a 1 inch divot from taking a pole-hammer shaft right to the noggin...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

*pole axes

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And I never got to, our club isn't really equipped for that. I'm mostly longsword.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It’s so weird but so good!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whenever my parents come for a visit we tend to exchange a bottle of Inca Kola for a bottle of Moxie.

I had a Peruvian best friend in grade school. They had a bottle or two in the fridge the entire time I knew him.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My brother lived in Peru for a minute and introduced our family to it. So bummed it's hard to find in US.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Latin markets, my friend. Here in the UK you can find it easier now that it was bought by the coca cola company

I have no idea if he's doing good or bad but I loved watching it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Who scored there?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like how the ref looks like he's ready to attack when he sees his opportunity

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did he parry that last blow as he was staggering past. Some Witcher style shenanigans there.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

How d'you like that silver?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Wait, that's not fencing. Is that kendo?

Entiendo esta referencia.

Did he lose that touch? Not sure the game but in Sabre fencing he would have lost the touch.

Why does the judge carry stick ? To beat them into submission ?

8 years ago | Likes 120 Dislikes 1

In case he needs to interfere, so he can stick it in the combatants field of view without getting into the blade's reach.

8 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 0

Short answer: yes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would you like to stick your arm in the way of a sword to break them up?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

"speak softly and carry a big stick"

"Walk softly, and carry a big gun." - Librarian

-Teddy Roosevelt. On that note, no he didn't say this, it comes from a political cartoon. Some good history right there, good job.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

Hema - Historical European Martial Arts. This is the longsword competition. Other common competitions are rapier and saber.

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But you can find really everything. In Bologna (IT) there is a very interesting sword and cape competition.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I know a rapier is a type of sword, but I still initially read that to the effect of "other competitions are rapier than this one"

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That would be something to see.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There is also Dussack, Messer, and Sword And Buckler, as well as other varieties of rapier/sidesword combat that allow for offhand daggers.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, absolutely: as I wrote in the next comment there are really a variety of different weapons. I personally enjoy Dussack a lot.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same, my favs are messer/buckler, dussack and sidesword.have the prototype gustav messer from landschnekt emporium, Adam did a great job.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dussack is german cutlass, a buckler is a small shield, and a messer is a "big knife" (effective a falchion by different construction)

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So it’s kinda like fencing with a bigger sword?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Kinda, yeah. Edge-work is much more important, thrusting less so. http://www.thearma.org/essays/armoredlongsword.html

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pretty much not. The techniques are completely different. Fencing is very stabby. This is more slashy. I could try actually explaining, but

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

that would result in a mile-long thread of comments, since I'm not good at keeping things short and concise.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ok I understand that to some degree I guess I was thinking more along the lines that it had swords and some similar protective equipment lol

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks like simply a slower form of sabre. That's not necessarily a negative.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I haven't seen an actual sabre fight in a while, but I do imagine it's far closer than fencing.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sabre is the third weapon in Olympic fencing.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not a bad analysis. There are some different principles, but if you play with it, it is VERY similar.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I think the main differences would be some of the stances and the way blocking is done. Blocking with a longsword is different than

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh I imagine there's quite a bit of nuance. "Simply" is probably the wrong word, but appreciate the confirmation about similarity. :)
