I'm writing this in a spirit of 'let's all just be fucking human beings and try to understand and be good to each other instead of hating each other because we never took the damn time to try': I'm Transgender, here's what that means (for me): It means that I felt, even well before I knew why so ashamed of, and disgusted by my body that I would have panic attacks whenever I had to dress formally, or knew I might be photographed. It means that as I did begin to understand that I might be trans I was even more disgusted with myself, because I had been taught that to be trans was to be a deviant, to be something shocking, vulgar, and demeaned. I was taught that it meant I wanted to trick men into fucking me. I was taught to associate it with prostitution, and drug-use, and insanity. I was taught that sometimes there really were trans people who were normal, but I was also taught that these people had to meet a preposterously narrow, and stereotypical model that I didn't and that gave me the tools to stay in denial for years. When I did become more comfortable around other people I felt like I had to hide behind a mask, and I felt constantly ashamed because I couldn't just make it all go away. I fell in love. I always felt that she would hate me if she knew, and trying to hide it from her made me so stressed I felt like my life was being torn apart, and I felt guilty because I thought it was all my fault. Accepting how I feel, and taking the long road I have towards being comfortable with who I am was necessary for me to live my life. Transitioning by taking hormones, and changing my name, pronouns, and presentation is something that has finally made me comfortable, and accepting of who I am. So for christ's sake, I ask you: please if you've read all this consider letting go of some of your misconceptions about what it means to be trans, and in general try to empathize with the experience of others cause I think you'll find that in the end whether we're straight or queer, dark or fair skinned, fortunate or down on our luck and justifiably angry or sad because of it we're all human beings, we all feel, we all think, we are all flawed. So while some of us are assholes most of the time, and all of us are assholes some of the time, we all have far more in common than we usually admit, and for the most part we are capable of seeing each other's humanity. I'm happy to answer questions about being trans if you genuinely want those questions answered. We all need to be less shitty to each other, and part of that is trying to understand and accept each other. I believe doing so would be of great benefit to us all, and would help us all to be free and prosperous. I know imgur's a silly fucking place, I'm really pretty easy-going, and I'm not on imgur just to preach or anything, but I've gotten a lot of shit for being who I am on here and elsewhere, and I've seen a lot of fellow trans people have to live in denial, and in often quite justifiable terror that their own friends and family will disown them for something that's an integral and perfectly okay part of who they are, something that they can't change, and that they should be allowed treatment for in the form of gender reassignment (whatever reasonable steps that involves). I just thought it might help to try and explain what it's actually like, and how acknowledging it was a profoundly important, and I believe necessary part of living my life in case anyone happened to read it.
