I'm an idiot Edit: I thought this was breaking news but it turns out it was a new interview done with the Director, talking about Henry's interview from years ago.
Thanks to @elevengoldfish for breaking the bad news to me. https://variety.com/2023/film/news/henry-cavill-james-bond-audition-tremendous-casino-royale-director-1235652975/

Saw new Superman casting. Was kinda meh for me because I think of Cavil when I think of Superman now. Same with Geralt.
fourscythe
This doesn't mean anything. The director they're talking about is Martin Cambell who hasn't directed a bond film since Casino Royal (Plus he also directed Green Lantern so maybe he's not a good judge of acting Talent)

“i still beat his ass in my movie”
newfieDog
Hmmm.
SugarSmack
I love Henry. I just want to see my boy do well.
lukelorian
Honestly if they don't have the balls to do Idris elba Cavill would be a good 2nd imo
Bond8789
He'd be perfect for Bond, he proved that in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. I also wouldn't mind seeign Aidan Turner or Nicholas Hoult cast. But Cavill is my #1 choice.
mouseasw
Can we drop 007 entirely and get a new spy action franchise without a nasty mysoginistic history?
NAbsentia
No. Henry Cavill is Archer.
SofaH3ro
Stop giving me edgy beefy Bond. I need doughy aloof Bond. Cavill and Craig are great actors but really don't jive with the scrappy Bond that kinda bumbles through and gets it done.
DisastErik
Thats because he os a good actor.
Silver420Surfer
Nope.
csullivan
Just give us Jason Statham aa Bond with Guy Ritchie directing. Please.
BaconAlmighty
@OP, he said it was tremendous as he auditioned before Daniel Craig became 007

He’s too good for Bond.

They said he was too young then, but he was good. Now they say he's too old to play him. Dumbasses.

Haven't they run out of books and both the original and the takeover author are dead. New books weren't great anyways, the days of relying on gadgets basically ended with Daniel Craig.
delecti
I blame Austin Powers for killing camp in James Bond. Now it's just another James Bourne. I want the silly gadgets back.

I'm surprised they never did anything with the adventures of jimmy bond, or James Bond jr. 003.5

Sorry, friend. This audition was competitive with DC's: "“Casino Royale” director Martin Campbell revealed in a new interview with Express UK that Henry Cavill could have been James Bond had Daniel Craig not earned the role of 007 in his 2006 franchise reboot." .... "Despite Cavill’s fantastic audition, Campbell said he was not “favoring Henry” over Craig for the role." https://variety.com/2023/film/news/henry-cavill-james-bond-audition-tremendous-casino-royale-director-1235652975/
dizzyturtle
Crap I thought this was a new story. Not a new article about an old story. I should delete it but I think it has run its course.
elevengoldfish
Nah, keep it up. Maybe edit your post to include the link and some historical context?
Rips4w
I don't dislike Craig, but he never felt very "Bond"ish to me.
ScottyDoesDev
He was a very different type of bond, for sure. His arc started with a scene of him conducting absolutely incredible acts of violence instead of subterfuge in a tux with a martini in hand.
MrBismarck
I hope they let Cavill Bond reload his arms.
bingotown
I always thought that was to poo the darts in the back of the tailored shirt to give more punching room.

Yikes, “pop”, not poo.

He was the best thing about the movie.
fortfantastic
Dan Stevens would be a great bond but he's an underdog
EatingFiftyBagels
WillWorkForHeadpats
This is the best suggestion outside of Elba or Cavill I have seen. I would so be on board for this
FINNSTAR7
Could be cool, but I'd rather see him stay as Geralt of Rivia for season 4.
dizzyturtle
True, I would rather see him stay as Superman also.
Xionis
I wanna seem him as Eisenhorn or Cain.
Sonicschilidogs
"Nah, instead we're going to fire him and Gadot, but keep that Ezra kid, everyone loved him as the Flash and will pay big bucks to see him solo!"- the literally braindead executive team at Warner Brothers Studios.
olivertheoctopus
… they did WHAT?!
Alavar
There's literally no confirmation he's staying as Flash yet. And given the shit performance in the box office he probably won't.
Sonicschilidogs
The fact that they didn't cancel the flash, but they did Batgirl, confirmed he did stay as flash for at least one more film than he should have
taterthotsfordinner
I wish this were 15 years ago. He'd be amazing, but unfortunately, the studio won't go for someone they can't squeeze 15 years out of. It's partially why we never got Idris Elba as bond. Both would be perfect
MisuseOfLiterally
Id much rather get Idris Elba. I like Henry fine but I think he's *very* overrated. Idris has much more the needed charisma for a Bond character
legalizegillyweed
Henry is only 2 years younger than Daniel was when he was cast so it could work without a doubt
rmsrmsrms38
Kinda. But they always cast bond as older. Cavill is actually kinda young, historically. Or he has aged well.
olivertheoctopus
This was 15 years ago. The article literally states that casting for Cavill occurred at the same time as Craig. Cavill was dropped from consideration because he was considered too young.
TheDaharMaster
I unmatched w a girl who said Idris would be a terrible choice bc he’s black. Bish PLEEEEEASE
BigBoatAndy
Or Peter Dinklage.
hardytardigrade
Yes, an Elba-Cavill Bond team up would be perfect
Da3n
He is 2 years older than Daniel Craig was when he was cast. They could do a TV streaming series with a movie every 2-3 years...with a pre planned overall story arc, they could create a whole new medium with content entering both sides of a competing market simultaneously.
DanielAsparagus
Like that will happen.
Da3n
Shh. Don't deny me my dreams.
Da3n
But enjoy your +1 because my laugh came out as an audible snort when I read your comment. =D
Hurro
I still want Idris Elba in one Bond.
ministerm
He's too busy with Luther. And honestly, just watch Luther since he's basically doing Bond-like things in it anyway.
DisneyCountdowns
Can we please stop with “let’s take something white and do it black, for shock value”. Can’t we just work to create well written original black content (see Stan Lee).
seekingdaedalus
there's nothing specifically 'white' about "James Bond." it's not "white culture." it's a british secret service person, and there are plenty of british people with dark skin. There's no need for this 'separate but equal' shit. More original black content, yes, but a dark skinned person can be a legacy IP hero too. There's nothing wrong with it unless it's done shitty. IMO
Hurro
It's not cause he's black. It's because he's British and he's a great actor? Thanks for coming out, though.
SecondWind90
I think black people deserves more newly content with central roles instead of squeezing them into old established IP's where it makes 0 sence (E.g. ROP)
ByThePowerOfSCIENCE
The problem is, established IP is way more popular (and thus bankable). Also we don't need to be sticklers about the old material: I haven't watched Rings, but even if Tolkien didn't write any dark skinned races we can still build on his work.
FlatPlutoSociety
I overall agree with you, but it's not shock value here. Idris Elba has the perfect vibe for Bond, and people were talking about him as a good candidate when Craig was ultimately cast. He's obviously too old to pick up the role at this point, but like 15 years ago he would've knocked it out of the park.
ByThePowerOfSCIENCE
Some director said Elba was “too street” (i.e., not posh enough), and some took it to mean “too black”, but he was referring to the roles he was most famous for.
IhopeyougetstageIIIcoloncancer
The recent movie established that 007 is a persona, not a person, and that it transfers between people as needed (implicitly validating all prior Bond films as canon with each other, simply occurring during different tenures of the role).
theBonyEaredAssfish
For a clarification, "007" is not a persona; it's an explicit code name, that naturally someone can inherit. "James Bond" is not a persona either; he's a person. That's his birth name, in fact. Although there are continuity problems with the previous films (to be expected for a franchise running 50+ years), but they actually make references that James Bond is a person. Funny as that sounds.
theBonyEaredAssfish
The books (which I suppose don't necessarily count towards the movies) make it very clear James Bond is one person. There's a *giant* detail you can't overlook in that regard. But like I said, the movies touch on that as well.
giveittomestraightlikeapearcidermadefrom100percentpears
I concur.. The Dr Who theory of Bond regenerating, and another agent taking the name/mantle drives me crazy.. Plus, old Rodge put flowers on Tracy's grave in For Your Eyes Only.. Bit weird if that wasn't his missus!
ByThePowerOfSCIENCE
Rather, don't lean on diversity / novelty as your sole source of value and neglect everything else. The problem with “just make new non-white content” is that most of the cherished, established tales that have an advantage would be out of reach for non-white casting. Where's the Cyborg DC movie? The next Black Panther?
ITellBadPuns
Rather than spray-painting a white character black, use an existing black character or create a new one.
dennydorko
I agree except we literally just had a 2nd Black Panther movie last year.
ByThePowerOfSCIENCE
Huh, I totally missed it.

None of the above he saw through to the end. Not sure about Sherlock tho. Super and Witcher he had a dispute with the makers, and now james bond I have a feeling he'll quick halfway through as well
ubermonkey21
The Multiverse of Cavill will be insane, mostly due to Henry's performance of all the characters at the same time. His Nostradamus needed work, but his Ghandi was inspired.

To explain: rich people put their money in a million different investments not just to make money but to also protect their wealth in case of a market crash or some sort of disaster
alwaysthecheesegrater
Well, acting IS his job. So taking any role IS for money (and something productive to do)
Ih8thisSoMuch
He killed it in U.N.C.L.E. and I'd like to see 007 return to the sort of campy Roger Moore-ish years. He's 15 years younger than Craig so why tf not
michaeloberg
And Daniel Craig suuuuucked so absolutely
OvertleyBadpickuplines
I would just like more U.N.C.L.E, but the studio had weak bones.
JaimeLannistersRightHand
I just hope they don't make him reload his arms like in mission impossible
LovelyMover
Roger Moore understood how old he was & how ridiculous the idea of it all was in that context so played it tounge in cheek
gingen
man from UNCLE was SO freakin good. I want another tbh.
wkearney99
God no, Moore's performances were horrible.
ATribeofAfricanNatives
This was such a great movie, it was more bond than any bond movie over the past 20yrs. Really hope they don't fuck it up with him by continuing to go Michael bay rather than focus on the spy story and cool charisma
ministerm
You want more films like the derided Moonraker? Really?? Thank God you're not a producer.
jaakkopaakkonen
We want more films like Octopussy
Sonicschilidogs
No, no, no, I want AN octopussy...... Unrelated to the Bond franchise....
Tempcore
I have an appreciation for that Bond style, but i really liked the new vibe from the Craig movies
fredh67
I like Craig, too. I feel like it's more realistic, and far less sexist.
Tempcore
Yeah they had a more rugged feel, and action movies are always better when the main character gets fucked up a bit.
thebigbaka
Yeah he couldn't pull off Connery's rapey vibes
jaakkopaakkonen
Thank God for that. It's about time rapey vibes die out.
lemmonjello
give the man a chance!
KingMagenta
But Daniel Craig became Bond 17 years ago.
AfterMidknight
Cavill is 2 years younger than Brosnan was when he took on Bond. 5 years younger than Moore was. And only 2 years older than Craig was. Connery was shockingly young.
KingMagenta
He's definitely in the right age range, I'd say go for it

Man, I'd love to see an U.NC.L.E. sequel, recast hammer if you have to
michaeloberg
I believe he is (mostly?) redeemed? "In May 2023, the investigation by the Los Angeles District Attorney's office and the LAPD regarding Hammer resulted in no charges being pursued against him, citing insufficient evidence"
TheCobb1
You should go watch the house of hammer doc on HBO then. He is entirely not redeemed. Even if he’s exonerated, the court of public opinion and his actions as an abusive boyfriend aren’t going away any time soon.

Sonicschilidogs
Pierce Brosnan is best bond. Campy, but not too campy.
lpooptoomuch
i rewatched golden eye a few years ago, it did not last the test of time.
FlatPlutoSociety
Goldeneye Pierce was campy but not too campy. His other movies were basically Roger Moore movies.
th3guy
I mean, GoldenEye is ostensibly the best “modern” James Bond so.
ZeroCoolisCrashOverride
I mean I love Pierce, but he drove an Aston up an ice castle, surfed a titdal wave, and fought a dude on a 747 that had been smoked by a space oriented sun powered laser beam. Mind you all in one movie. Let’s not forget about Tomorrow Never Dies either.
cmsport2
Forget it? Why would I want to? It's what made young me love Bond and remains one of my favorites. I guess thats just the level of camp that suits me, but I don't begrudge people who disagree. I also dislike overly serious spy movies and TV dramas. Different strokes for different folks.
LTJJD
I actually liked tomorrow never dies. For the first movie post Cold War setting/enemies, it was a decent plot about a capitalist wanting to create a demand that only he could supply to make money. Not executed amazingly well but the core idea I can get behind. Much preferred over die another day,
Taxicat
Was Pierce the one who called out the execs on constantly pairing him with female costars that were less than half his age, or was that Roger Moore?
thetrulymaddog1134
I think roger Moore, but don’t quote me
theBonyEaredAssfish
Roger Moore didn't "call them out" per se, but supposedly he was inspired to leave the role once he found he was older than the leading lady's mother. The age gap for Brosnan's Bond girls was usually right around average.
UggItsThatKid24
Yes but I god damn love me some Rodger Moore! And Timothy Dalton.
likeumreal
Grew up in the 70s-80s & loved Moore's aristocratic vibes while banging goons' heads.
lemmonjello
timothy dalton is number 1 by a wide margin
KingXizor
He was the darker bond, I loved his movies
UggItsThatKid24
I'm a Golden Eye kid so Pierce is my number one but it's so ridiculously close it's almost unquantifiable.
NarratesTheDarkerStory
Pierce for me for same reason. I just always measured them all to him. not really fair to the others.
Elnauriel
My personal favourite too. Fun to see him go from the hero, Bond, to the villain, Sinclair, in The Rocketeer just a few years later. =)
beez428
He was so good in Hot Fuzz as well. So gleefully evil.
