Whale carcasses are a fantastic buffet for sharks, and for some species a belly full of whale chunks can last them months.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Then it can sink to the bottom and provide for hundreds if not thousands of other little critters. Think how much more life would be in the oceans just from that if we hadn't got in the habit of yoinking whales from the ocean for a century or 2

Someone cut smaller pieces for the lil sharp toothed toddler please, he can't chew all that great yet.

My brother had lots of silver fillings/caps when we were kids. I called him, Jaws, because I was a dick.

They gorge so much fat and meat that the sharks end up in a state that looks like drunkenness to humans.

Is that gas escaping from the carcass?

It looks like it is.

Do you want big smelly dead whales floating around in the ocean with you? No? Well sharks are what take care of that for us. Thank you, sharks! Now let's stop killing them, please

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

'm no marine biologist, but the main reason land animals don't just sit around forever when they die is bugs and decomposers, not large carnivores. I suspect it's similar in the ocean.

Didn't mythbusters determine that the psi of a shark bite is less than a human? The two factors that make shark bites so terrible is 1) the rows of razor sharp teeth, and 2) its speed in the water, which turns those chompers into a saw. If I'm misremembering, please correct me.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

I'd be cautionary with Mythbusters in such matters, and would look more to marine biologist reports. Also, strength of shark bites vary wildly not just by the size of a shark but species of shark, so blanket determining such a thing for shark bites in general I'm questioning that. The average of human bite is 162 psi, whereas a great white shark (like in the vid) can get upward of 4k psi. Unless Mythbusters knows something biologists in the field don't.

Yup that is pretty much it, only addition I have is that water provides a lot more resistance than air so prey does not move a long with the teeth but remains more or less stationary while the teeth go through it.

This is equally funny if you look at the panels from right to left (manga style) or left to right (comic style) for different reasons.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

is it for different reasons? looks to me like it's basically the same either way, but it's a good point that it works both ways.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Left to right it looks like she's getting in your face as an aggressive power move. Right to left it's like ok now explain yourself you little shit.

Yes, this is like a haircut to them, and creates no harm. However, in this case, it's already quite fucking dead, unfortunately.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sure, a little Ben-gay and a good nights sleep it'll be right as rain.

after hearing how Orcas corral and eat the livers out of live great whites before leaving them to die... I'm neutral on the whale-shark sympathy scale.

Me and my brother found a 12 meter dead whale once when I was a kid. We could smell it 500 meters away

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How close did you get? Close enough where you can taste the smell?

We were right next to it eventually. The smell was really bad!!

It is currently being held up by the trapped gasses of its own putrid decay! At this point, it's a race to see whether its (likely quite numerous) parasites will weaken its cohesion or the sharks will rip a hole into the body cavity first, but most of that meat will head to the crushing depths just after one of the largest farts in the world!
