Same era, two different personalities Windows 95 Vs  Windows 98

Mar 12, 2026 8:15 PM

I miss playing Heroes of Might & Magic, Starcraft, Doom 2, and Empire Earth on my first PC running Win '98.

Childhood memories

It sucks that when it's too late, we understand what our parents kept saying how they missed their younger years

Those two are just begging for a StarCraft battle over serial

I want to feel the monitor's fur one last time...

Ok, serious question, when I was extremely young, maybe 10. I played a 3D racing game (I can find it if I really try) but between the lag and it being the family computer, my Packard Bell legitimately started smoking.
Has that ever happened to anyone else?

There was an era of Bad Capacitors at one point and they were common for a few years. That could be the only thing I could think of. Unless somebody left some kind of plastic coating on the CPU that melted and smoked when the CPU got hot. Rarely could software actually damage hardware... There was a Worm that could play merry Hob on hard drives, but even that was correctable if you knew how. Oh, Bugs could cause smoking too. And not software bugs, I mean roaches. love the warmth of computers. FR

imagine that, the newer software running on the machine with half the specs is slower than the simpler OS with less bloatware and double the ram and processor. i'm astonished it was this close

Cushlamochree, I haven't heard that Windows 95 sound for decades. ❤️‍🔥

Shit, man. I remember when we have typing classes in school.

A lot of my typing skills I owe to Mario Teaches Typing.

I have a copy of Win95, unsupported release still shrink wrapped. I've been wondering what an install would be like

Why is 98 on the lesser ram one? (I don't know if there's a difference between 95 and 98 that would matter, but I bet there is)

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaan, proper BIOS boot screens.... Gotta go through all the fucking options to get one any more, and half the time it's still barely more than a splash screen.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was fascinated just watching the defrag event on my first computer which had Windows 98. I could just zone out after a long day at work.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had them both....My heart stopped when i read: bios checksum error.

Yeah time to replace your cmos battery. Super easy to do on most desktop machines, just a CR2032 battery, set the clock save the settings and it's good for another 5+ years.

The sound of a floppy drive on startup just sends me back

I love the DOS session underneath, autoexec.bat and config.sys memories - good stuff!

And those startup sounds gave me a funny tummy feeling

somehow, I saved this post in my "sexy" favorite folder. And now I wont change it.

95 should be on the 133/32MB and 98 should be on the 200/64GB - also it should be Win95C (OSR2.5) and Win98SE ;)

1 month ago | Likes 138 Dislikes 1

95C is quite a mess. Sure, the internet explorer integration streamlines the file browser but also comes with tons of overhead. Recently put Win95 on various 386 class machines "for fun" and found the RTM release to be way more pleasant to use.

I was hoping same OS on both

*64MB

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

64 gb of ram is worth a small fortune right now. Should probably just go with the 64 mb.

1 month ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

640 KB should be enough for anyone...

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

lol 2 years ago when I built my system with 64 people said it was nuts. So glad I did, the same ram(if u can even find it) is 4x what it cost me back then(and it was already pretty pricey when I got them)

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have a gaming desktop that could take 128GB. I’m sad I didn’t go ahead and max it out last year before prices went sky high. Oh well.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bought 128GB for $230 about three years ago. It would cost triple that to replace it now.

4 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When I upgraded my pc on black Friday with a ryzen 5700x (from a 2400g), it came with 32gb ram free in addition to the processor discount. So I have 48gb DDR4 in there now. Now that kit is over $200

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Slight hint, maybe help maybe not, depending on the ram and if it is dual channel or not, unpaired / unmatched kits of different sizes (ESP of diff sizes) may result in EXPONENTIALLY slower ram than if u had just used the 32 gig kit(2x16) without the 16 extra. It would be worth it imo to take the 16 out and test your ram with various programs, then slap it back in and test again to see for sure. I know adding the 8 extra I had to the 32 I had in an older system SLOGGED it down a fuckton.

Woops! Lol.. I default to GBs these days :p

1 month ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Isn't that fascinating... we're talking about a RAM usage increase of x1000!

It took me ages to let go of Windows 98. And after that, ages to let go of XP.

1 month ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

My faves have been 98SE, Fully upgraded and service packed XP, and 7. 11 is okay if you go and get Winaero Tweaker and remove all the enshitification.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

98SE was the last Windows I ever owned. Then they started going with activation servers with XP and I said "this is only going to get worse" and moved to Linux. There were some rough times, but for the most part, no regrets.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

and then 7, and now 10. And I can't believe 10 is the one I've been on for the longest stretch.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

One of my workmates still customises every new version of windows to look/feel like win95

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It also took ages to let go of Win7.

1 month ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Oh, I'm still truckin'.

4 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I only moved away from Windows 7, once driver support started to wane.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Hardware forced me to leave Win7. I was...displeased.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm actually still daily driving it. Every day i'm amazed that the vast majority of websites still work with it without issue although a lot of software doesn't anymore.

Just by some metrics. What was probably the fun bit is that we were relatively young and still had the time to endlessly fiddle to get our crappy Soundblaster working. Yes, I loved optimising my config.sys to optimise memory and have a different boot sequence for each game, but nowadays its very nice when you can just turn em on and they work.

I think back to when my brother and i were surfing BBS' on a 200 baud modem. We could call some place, download games and files, chat with folks. All before internet. It was insane. Early windows got folks good with dos commands, too, and that's helped my career ever since. Even doing a basic copy command blows folks away. I'll use excel to mass produce copy commands to paste into powershell and have hundreds of files copied over. Keeps me employed

I think peak computing was around 2008: just before everything became a SaaS but Internet speeds were decent, games were pretty decent-looking, and social media was not a complete hellscape.

1 month ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Ye it took me 2 weeks to get those sound drivers working after reinstalling windows once a year. And I never understood what was the issue. Same fight every time, harder Endboss than in the games

1 month ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Just goo- ........ oh.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At least we knew where the file was saved.

4 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

IRQ conflict, most likely. If the soundcard wasn't workingh, it was always an IRQ conflict. Moving around tiny jumpers ftw!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because they were new to you and there was more experimentation and no enshittification and ... computers were more fun back then.

I’m curious about 2 things:

1. Was TrumpRapesAndEatsChildren0001 already taken?
2. If not, what happened to the first TrumpRapesAndEatsChildren iteration?

I’m curious about 3 things:

3. What do you plan on doing to start your TrumpRapesAndEatsChildren life with plenty of leeway for the occasional ban or 2000.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

1 & 2. No, I just didn't want to use 0001 - but feel free to rename yourself if you so desire :)
3: I'm not sure I understand that question.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hear me out for a sec. What if a lot of us swapped our names to that, only with incremental numbers.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That... was the idea :)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just assumed you had a first account that got banned, and with your numbering scheme it appears you plan on getting many accounts banned.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, but i recreate my account periodically (hence the low point score / relatively recent join date), as a long-term tracking countermeasure...
