"Unfazed by the vitriol". Please, Dr Louks. Don't use big words the haters won't understand.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

??? What is happening

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Serious question. Why the hell are people still on twitter.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A little more info on her thesis, which seems quite reasonable to me:

"...her thesis "explores why certain writers of the past century use the language associated with smell to characterise harmful attitudes towards objects of disgust and desire".

"I draw on the well-documented history of olfactory prejudice in order to examine its contemporary relevance,""

For now, impotent rage on social media is the worst they can do. But pretty soon, people who think exactly like them, some of whom probably personally partook in this, will be running the government unopposed. They've already shown how brazen they are. The Handmaid's Tale is getting eerily close. No wonder they don't want people to study literature...

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is why we can't have nice things.

1 year ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

The internet can really be a sesspool of horrible people when they think they're operating with anonymity.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That Dr Ally Louks sounds like a great person, I hope she stays this way. And get's out of that rats nest formerly known as Twitter.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I was so confused. At first I was "Did she fake her education?" what did this woman do to deserve this? And then it hit me. She got trolled because she is a woman. There exists places online that don't treat everyone with respect. Ahhhh silly me.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Dr Louks' PhD is titled "Olfactory Ethics: The politics of smell in modern and contemporary prose". The mind boggles.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

(at the responses she got, I meant.)

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

why would people hate on her though…Good for her!

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I am pretty sure that she also got proposals for dating, marriage, Furry pals, smash their nuts, crush their heads, death by snu snu, etc. Why don't they cover those as well? I am pretty sure that there are some folks out there that would be attracted to smart and pretty accomplished women. Why only see negative news? I want to read about the positive/funny proposals.

I left that place before Elon Musk took over. I think I was there 40 days. It's just not a nice place.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Congrats to her and the haters can suck it.

1 year ago | Likes 189 Dislikes 6

I feel like having haters is a huge sign of success. There's a lot of people ready to pull others down and it's usually the more successful people. I think which is why she's not really affected by their comments.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sounds like an interesting thesis but, yeah, nothing new otherwise: reactionaries want to destroy education and academia in particular, they hate few things more than an educated women.

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 4

Also, BBC, is that really the definition of „trolling“ now? Rape and death threats?

1 year ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Other headlines are equally head-scratching. „Fierce backlash“, „dividing the internet“ what?

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Clickbait.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The article says Dr. Louks post has been viewed 100 million times and attracted (more than) 11,000 responses. Dr. Louks stresses that the majority of the reactions were "incredibly nice, kind and generous". But let’s say 51%, to be on the safe side. That leaves 49% of commenters being jerks online, but I can imagine the official number is way lower. That counts up to be 0,00539% out of one hundred million, or 5,390 people.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

100 million is more than 1% of earth population. I'd guess there are a lot of bots in that number.

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Views are counted based on how often the tweet was loaded in, this includes people just scrolling past it on their feeds and embeds in other places, like newspapers.

Also how the site tallies it at all. I remember a controversy from facebook or youtube counting a few seconds watching the autoplaying thumbnail as a view and engagement.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah sure some women are shitlords, but men absolutely have way too much power and abuse it. Take some fuckin responsibility and rein your fellow men in because they won't listen to women.

I never said they don't as they most certainly do, especially old white fucks who were born with a platinum spoon in their mouths. That said, I ain't responsible for some dip shit being a dip shit but I will call them out if they're saying or doing rude shit in public. IDGAF who they are, bullies shouldn't be allowed to keep bullying.

Because people have social and professional networks on there still, Becky. The trend is clear but it's not complete. It's a big jump for a lot of people, and some have a foot in more than one camp now, especially if they're trying to take people with them.

If you have a table of 9 nazis and 1 woman with a phd sits down, it doesn't somehow make the table better. It just makes her life worse.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

And if one not knowing nazi sits down at the table he thi ks the entire world is fulm of nazis because he does not know anyone else not being a nazi exists. You are not there to prevent nazis from being nazis, but to make othernewbies not become nazis

Who takes the time to check on accounts they blocked? Do people not have anything better to do?

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I mean, they spend enough time on Twitter to even be bothered by it.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I think they were just curious enough to take a look at what they were blocking. Bluesky lets you use blocklists created by other people so you can preemptively block accounts that others have already decided are unwanted. From what I gather, a lot of people moving to Bluesky take advantage of a few popular blocklists before doing much else.

Think about adblockers. You don't actually know what you're blocking until you look at the details, and sometimes those details are meaningful.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I heard a new twitter clone came out that's quickly becoming popular, bluesky

1 year ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 3

Bluesky or X. That's like choosing between pest or cholera.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 10

New lol

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I will say it's not really a Twitter clone. It has a lot of similarities true that's because it's a social media site. If you take him to the guts of how the software actually works and how the company is founded you will see that they couldn't be more different. Blue skies bounded as a benefit Corporation which allows it to have objectives outside of Simply generating profit. Is also decentralized when it comes to it's programming structure.

1 year ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

The filtering of users is also incredible. You can just pick some lists that are moderated by sources you trust, everyone on that list becomes invisible to you, and as the lists are updated, the new additions are automatically blocked. Subscribe to a couple active nazi blocking lists, and you might only see one or two fascist hot takes a week.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But why... I understand that neanderthal pricks were themselves, and that is not nice, or should be tolerated. But why sink into the shadows? Stand up to them, don't let them ruin and change your life. In fact, because of this, it has been brought to the attention of the authorities.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

To what end? They want to argue. Victory for them is shouting at you. The whole point of right wing trolling is engagement. Ignore the fascists, go have decent conversations at bluesky. That way they lose. You are not going to convince a troll that trans women are women. All you are doing is increasing ad revenues for Musk.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, go to bluesky, and tell like minded people the problems of the world so you can get all the agreements from other people. Sounds like winning to me.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

So what does winning look like to you? If you think having a shouting match on Twitter is going to achieve anything other than raising blood pressure you are sorely mistakem

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Winning is showing that you don't care what they think.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's strange to me you don't think what's left of Twitter is already "the shadows" and that you're not encouraging people to leave those shadows. This whole "stay and fight" mentality only works when the owner of the platform isn't encouraging the hate and vitriol.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm not part of twitter, never have been, because it is not a platform I have ever wanted to use. I use Facebook now and then, which plenty of people on here have told me "I need to delete" and my response to them is, fuck you, it's my life. I block idiots I don't like, can do the same here, and anywhere else. You are just letting them win by letting them push you away. Your money's always going to someone richer who doesn't share your belief, whatever you buy.

The work in question

Dr Louks' PhD is titled "Olfactory Ethics: The politics of smell in modern and contemporary prose" and took her three and a half years to research and write.

She said her thesis "explores why certain writers of the past century use the language associated with smell to characterise harmful attitudes towards objects of disgust and desire".

This is why she got the hate? Humanity needs to stop.

1 year ago | Likes 398 Dislikes 8

To be honest, it doesnt sound like a terribly lucrative degree to have. That said, if thats your passion/interest, who gives a shit? Besides, everyone is poor these days, even the ones with the more "lucrative" degrees and "desireable" jobs

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Honestly? I think it's just a bully mentality. They're just bullies looking for someone to step on so they can feel big about themselves. Right now Twitter is like /b/ and 4chan. A holding tank of filth that exists so that they don't spread anywhere else. Leave it and let them circle-jerk without bothering us.

The relationship between disgust and politics is known (the more easily disgusted, the more conservative), and between disgust and morals (lots of disgust-style language for moral concepts, and psychological overlap - if you feel dirty, you'll be less forgiving), so this is really par for the course. I know nothing about literature but this sounds reasonable to explore.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yep - I have a feeling her work explores exactly this issue, and it triggered some Trumpoids who are accurately described therein :D

There are plenty of people on imgur who would give her hate for this too along the lines of "omg stop overanalysing everything, maybe the curtains are just fucking blue". People's attitudes to academia can be fucking dire even if they aren't hateful incel wannabe rapists

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 19

To be fair, it does seem like an incredibly silly thing to study.

Reminds me of that goofy 2 hour documentary about "The Shining" that was complete nonsense to to bottom. You can talk for 2 hours about anything, that doesn't mean it's got serious merit, but I suppose you have to do something, and the good stuff had been done.

None of that is a good reason to threaten death or take over for damn sure, but we can hold both of those in our minds right? It was silly, not worthy of threats.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I would argue that taking the value of academic study with a pinch of salt is a far healthier attitude than unquestioning veneration, and that it is reasonable to question if a particular piece of research is over analysis. I'm also of the strong opinion that 'omg stop overanalysing everything' is a long, long way from hate, and if you're going to lump it in the same bin as rape and death threats you've got some thinking to do yourself.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Being critical of critical theory is a given. No one in any area of academia expects their thesis to be hand-waved through. Between the bizarre binary of "you must accept every thesis" and "critique is bad and equivalent to rape threats" you tried to established lies every single opinion in the world! Reflexive dismissal of a study topic (usually with absolutely no attempt to read past the title) is very common on imgur and the kind of low level anti-intellectualism too way through uncritically

Nah mate she got the hate because 'A woman should marry and have kids" and all sorts of other shit. These fuckers didn't bother reading anything about what she did or wrote. They saw a woman post a picture of a proud moment celebrating a milestone in her life and the insecure diphits couldn't stand for that

1 year ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 2

The stupidity is that it's not even like having a PhD stops the marriage/kids part. It's the subservience they want. Education leads to independence

Can we maybe not try to match the misogynists who hate on this lady for her achievement with body-shaming men?

1 year ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 6

Not body shaming men. I'm insulting people who derive superiority from the downthrodding of others they perceive as lesser beings.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 12

No, you were engaging in body-shaming. You can do better than that. Direct your insults at the misogynists, not an unrelated swathe of the male population. If you don't keep challenging yourself morally and ethically you'll fall into the same toxic ruts the people hating on that lady are wallowing in.

Tolerance contract. THEY decided to opt out of the contract by spewing hate and vitriol at her. They now are no longer able to demand the protection from an accordingly worded answer.

In older words: If they can't stand the heat, they should stay the fuck outta the kitchen.

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 11

Every person with a small penis insulted her?
Only people with a small penis insulted her?

Having a micro penis doesn't make you a bad person, and it sucks for the genuinely good men out there who 100% had no choice in the size of their genitals.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

There was someone here with a micropenis a few years back who was suicidal, changed my mind on the topic. The fascists aren't gonna read your comments here, decent people who might share the mocked features are. Worse than that, these comments imply the feature is objectively bad, yet you're just only allowed to say that out loud to a chosen few.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

You missed the point, and were insulting a great deal of men, actually, most of whom had nothing to do with that hate speech directed against that woman. Kindly stop trying to defend body-shaming. The size of someone's penis has no correlation to their attitude.

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

an anecdote- I know a woman about 15 years younger than me who has an onlyfans. She also has a bachelors in business admin. She was a warehouse manager for three years, making about 64K/year. She quit because her OF was earning her more money- her best month (not an average, admittedly, but still) brought in 12K.

Sex work *is* legitimate work, and it pays *really* well. Her car and degree are completely paid off now and she's 3/4 of the way done with her 30 year mortgage- at 27.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And what happens when she gets too old to sell pictures of herself? The point is that beauty fades. A degree (and subsequent experience and doors that obtaining a degree can open) is worth so much more in the long term. Personal development beats a quick buck every single time

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

there are a million ways to front-load your life for an easy retirement if you've got enough money. She's better off in her mid twenties than most americans my age. She'll be fine.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Luckily she has a degree and management experience to fall back on 👍

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To play the devil's advocate, I do think that on the one hand, higher education has become ridiculously expensive whilst simultaneously depreciating in actual value, and on the other hand, sex work is work like any other and needs to be destigmatised. That's the most positive spin I can give to this.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

So is this what "someone" should have said: "Respectfully, you should choose prostitution, which is a wrongly stigmatized profession, instead of pursing education which is currently overpriced."?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, I don't think it's for everyone, so I wouldn't say it's generally good advice (but then neither is higher education - though then again, they are not mutually exclusive). And also, despite what we may think of it, the stigma does still exist. But, hypothetically, sometimes sex work might be the better option for some people.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Educations expensive, so prostitution should be legal? That is a hell of a spin.
