There's a really good book called "A City on Mars" that looks at the practical problems with establishing human colonies on Mars, the moon or on an orbiting space station. Some of those novels can paint a pretty good idea of what it will be like tho, think the Expanse but not the martians, but the belters. Tho mars in those books never got to terraforming because all their resources went to war with earth. Never got to breath the outaide air, stuck to living underground for decades.

My understanding is that Mars has just enough atmo to be annoying, but not enough to be useful to protect from radiation. If you want a secondary rock, then Luna would offer similar types of difficulties but be considerably closer and would be more useful to bulk produce and export fuel and regolith to various locations. Of course, to terraform Earth, people in power would need to nut up and tell current benefactors to go fuck themselves.

Mars doesn't have a magnetosphere. Every human will die of radiation exposure, on top of the thousand other issues the planet presents. We could, in theory, place a strong enough battery system at a certain point between the Sun and mars. Put a one or two nuclear reactors to power it, and voila, a manmade magnetosphere. You can also use a smaller version on the surface for a localized effect.
It is possible to colonize it, but not with our *current* tech and will.

Yeah i wouldnt exactly say impossible, forget magnetosphere, what about atmosphere? People would need to live in closed off shelters, they probably could be shielded against radiation. But thats what it amounts to, a colony would mean living in tin cans with limited space air and other resources, also the lower gravity is going to affect people too, especially next generations raised there. It would suck.

By the time we could terraform Mars, we could have completed 30-50% of a Dyson sphere. Which would harness the energy of the sun efficiently, put humanity in moon+ sized colonies, with few of the problems of terraforming a planet other than generating gravity.

When you are talking installations that size, gravity shpuld be trivial, can be done by centrifuge. And then you can make as much gravity as you want, instead of being stuck with the default setting on Mars.

Atmosphere is the easy one. The only reason why the Martian atmosphere is so thin is because of the lack of magnetosphere. Once we tackle that, we can just put a shit load of bacteria that will eat C02 and fart oxygen, plus the water vapor that will happen when we melt the ice. Add in a city or two of nothing but greenhouse emitting factories and bobs your uncle.

Yeah but thats a big if. But my point being, lack of magnetosphere isnt currently the only ptoblem, there are more, so at this point living there would be kinda the same as on the moon, in some tin can base.
Actually making mars itself liveable with a magnetosphere and all, currently thats pretty much scifi and Elon is completely underestimating / misunderstanding it
