This is from 2021. https://www.cnn.com/2021/09/30/us/deaf-colorado-man-arrested-jailed-four-months/index.html One officer has been fired, the other resigned. The charges were eventually dropped, but the allegations in the lawsuit include some pretty serious issues not present in this post. Like denial of an interpreter to communicate with an attorney. And while the assault and resisting arrest charges were dropped fairly early on, they kept him in prison for having fake money, which isn't a crime unless it was attempted to be used instead of genuine dollars.
CorgisButtsDriveMeNuts
As I said earlier - american cops are trying really hard to see how far can they go before people start chasing them like rabid animals.
MeekrabJones
Fuck all police departments*. FTFY.
Merdock
I remember walking in on my in-laws watching some "scared straight" tv show with kids being taken to prisons. Anytime they showed a prisoner it said what they were in for. The vast majority had the sole crime of resisting arrest. Like... I don't know, but that doesn't seem like it should be an offense that warrants jail time if you are not convicted of anything else.
BalthazarIsAThirstyBeech
As a cop in Colorado, I cant agree more. I will never charge resisting arrest or obstruction by itself. Total BS

Jesus h Christ, the state of Tennessee has had the ability to mark a driver as deaf for 8 years now, and that is not saying Tennessee is ahead in this, it is not, they finally added this 8 years ago after getting sued so often for police brutality. The citizens paid for that not the cops so action wasn’t so swift.
boxak
I'm assuming he has a lawyer who is semi-conscious and mildly competent enough to sue the living hell out of them?
stsword
Probably doesn't matter. Individual cops and police departments are usually covered by their jurisdictions- So the vast likelihood is that the cops and the police department wouldn't be out one red cent.

#ACAB a male Police Officer threatened my female teacher with physical violence if she kept talking to Child Protective Services about my biological parents. The police officer was dismissed for something else. How many kids lives did he ruin before getting leaving the force? #AllCopsAreBad because his supervising officer knew that the cop was hiding abuses from CPS at the #LatterDaySaint #Mormon church the cop attended. The cop is still employed by the Mormon Church; he runs a youth camp.

You'd have to be a true imbecile to not recognise a bloke probably pointing at his ears and then doing sign language at you and not comprehending "oh, I think he's deaf". On top of that escalating the situation by not slowing down and trying to understand why this guy isn't complying. Fuckin idiots.
brobinson2001
Nah, man. That mf throwing gang signs! Shoot him!

I am a deaf person, not a Deaf person. There is a world of difference between the two. The measles took the hearing in my left ear totally. The right ear was diminished greatly. I hear noises like the parents on the Charlie Brown movies, kind of a "wah wah wah wah" sound. I need time to process as I read lips. Masks took my ability to communicate away. Cops are to stupid to hope for kind interaction to the public.
FlatPlutoSociety
And I guarantee at some point the deaf guy tried to communicate verbally, and a deaf person speaking is a very distinctive sound that absolutely everyone recognizes.

Well, he wasn't technically blind, but very visually impaired. A female cap stopped him because he had a folding cane in the back of his pants. She thought it was a weapon. After she realized it was not a weapon, she asked him his name, which he refused. Another officer showed up and things continued to escalate until he was eventually arrested for...something. He was released shortly after.

Yep. Cops like to say, "You can beat the rap, but you can't beat the ride." You'll go through massive hassles before you're released. They'll get overtime pay for completing the paperwork.
realrealluckless
All countries need a simple law for "Gross violation of human rights" and apply it broadly to anyone abusing their positions in government such as law enforcements. Anyone involved in allowing this deserves jail time at a minimum.
ethannguyen357
The problem with such broad and ambiguous legislation is it can often be used to perpetuate the human rights violations it claims it claims to be preventing. If you don't precisely define what a human rights violation is, then a cop can go around and arrest anyone they don't like, claiming they were committing a human rights violation.
nlky
We have that, it's the fourth and eighth amendments. It just gets ignored in favor of the thirteenth.
realrealluckless
Those are important laws, but they're rather meaningless without further laws reinforcing them and setting an actual punishment for violating them. A law with no consequences are merely words to be freely ignored.

Sounds like he should be on the receiving end of sizable settlement for civil rights violation. That department, jail, and anyone involved should be named.
stsword
Typically it doesn't matter- Police departments, and individual officers, are given indemnity which means that the city picks up the tab for everything including legal counsel. I read somewhere that in police lawsuits individual cops have paid in a grand total of 2% of the time.
xj4low
Yep, but the department/city will cover their suit and settlement...that is as long as they don't just drop all the charges except one if he drops the suit and accepts guilty on a $100 fine. Cities now days actually have lawsuit insurance or loans they will take out and pay back.
FragileDonkey

How does no one know ANY sign language? Like I'm not fluent but I've picked enough up to communicate at least. Not one cop or jailer even knew a bit? Wtf yall.
FukcTedCruz
I only know how to say "Fuck the police" in sign language.
OnlyWantToSayOneThing
You don't even need to know any sign language to see someone signing words and just assume they are deaf. All it takes after that is a pen and paper.
bedframe
Exactly this.
I0VE525P00GE
This…I feel bad that I only know how to call someone a Donkey raping shit eater in sign language. We should all know the basics. I once saw a documentary about a family who had one deaf son, and only the mother knew sign language. 3 siblings and his dad didn’t bother to learn it.
TheZommie
i don't know any deaf people, so I only learned how to say "fuck you" and "F U" in sign language, but damn, living with someone and not bothering to learn anything is some cold blooded shit
I0VE525P00GE
Crazy thing is…the documentary didn’t focus on the rest of the family’s lack of interest with communicating with him at all. It was just mentioned in passing. The doc was more about his ability to read lips. I was astounded.
TheGreatSynan
Oh, I wonder why he needed to get so good at reading lips?
FlatPlutoSociety
I don't know a single word of sign language, but I can sure as hell recognize when someone is trying to communicate by signing and would know to either communicate in writing or put a call in to find an interpreter.
boxak
I think the bigger thing is that police shouldn't treat every single encounter as a violent confrontation and then everyone can be calm enough to realize that the person they're stopping may have communication issues.
Hellstorm99
The classes are super hard to get into where I live. They have plenty, but there is a very high demand. I only know what I do from baby Einsteins
HeresYourSauce
I can't fault people for not knowing sign language, my father doesn't know much and he's deaf, but they didn't even try to communicate. Don't know sign language? That's fine, pen and paper. Can't have pen and paper? Hire an interpreter. There are ways to make this work. They didn't even try.
TalaayaCosplay
This thought process still assumes that cops are acting with good intent. They're so distrustful of anyone that they'll think you're faking.

Use speech to text on a phone. But of course cops hate phones because they can document police misconduct...
