Last night, my car was stolen where I work; a hospital.
My meds were in there and my doctor wont refill them because they are a controlled substance. I have called the police, insurance, my doctors office, and am treated like this is all my fault. I just cant process any of it.

I would have rather my windows been smashed, tires slashed, rims lifted, AND the stereo be stolen...but it is gone...just....all gone....Everyone, please stay safe, double/triple check that your cars are locked, buy a club if you are in a high risk area. Sure it is a pain in the butt, but I promise you it is better than your car being stolen.

@Op I had my truck stolen with a bunch of my tools and other stuff in it. It’s disorienting and unfair. The cops might find it, if they do everything will be gone and it’ll be all fuckered up inside. I hope you have a good insurance company. Make a claim on your auto for the vehicle and a property claim on your renter’s/homeowners insurance for everything in it. The auto claim may have a month before declaring it a total loss. Talk to the pharmacy and not the doc about refilling your meds.

Stickdeath had the right idea this whole time, with their car security system pitches. Fuck car thieves.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im sorry OP. People suck.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Happened to me last year. Pro tip, if the police find it and there are drugs found in it, you are supposed to get full inspection, and detailing for free. (Where I live anyway) so double check that if the car is recovered.

Fucking shit

I wish I could do something to help :(

Sorry that happened, friend. Hope you can get it sorted soon. Bureacrats and medical people can be shit.

speaking as someone who used to work at a towing company- it's likely they'll abandon it at some point, and you'll get it back. it'll probably be trashed, and maybe damaged, but nobody keeps a stolen car for long usually. they'll drop it somewhere and if it's in a spot that annoys people, they'll get it impounded, in which case you'll get served a notice and be able to pick it up.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's the point of having insurance if they just say "yeah fuck you" me anyway?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Easy. So the insurance company can make money.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don’t leave anything in your car you are not willing to lose, ever. Controlled substances are tricky for medication, explain your case the best you can but proof of a police report for the provider even a copy goes along way so they can feel comfortable refilling your medication.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I picked it up the night prior right before closing because I was working late. I literally did not even have time to register that it was in my car. Everyone can say it was stupid and everything but it might as well been similar to stopping at the gas station after I got my meds and the car getting jacked. Like where is the line! I’m not saying I’m not at fault in that part, but it isn’t like I left them in there as a regular thing.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve never had a car stolen… what does the insurance do? Do they pay you the same as if it was totaled?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they quite literally are legally unable to rewrite some scripts, they are likely speaking to you very coldly because this is an extremely common excuse for drug seeking behavior. youre just very unlucky that is actually happened to you

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, im not angry with my doctor He is just doing his job. It was more of the “you shouldn’t have had them in your car”…like my dude…I picked them up right before the pharmacy closed, I park in the garage at home, and work AT A HOSPITAL where you would think there would be some security…it was stupid, sure, but a lot of people just assume i keep them there as a normal thing.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They won't replace it because it's a controlled substance? What the fuck do they think people would do? "gee golly, my car got stolen with my meds in it for the 8th time this month". This is one of those absurd situations where the regulations, as written, make no sense.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had a friend who's car was stolen. Informed the cops. Sometime later he started getting parking tickets for the car. So they must know where the car is, right? Turns out the THEIF called the cops impersonating my friend and told them he'd found the car, so they stopped looking. Ballsy. He did end up getting the car back.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The way car theft works, they steal it, drive it some place remote, and let it camp for a few days to see if a lojack is on it that gets it found. So, your car is probably sitting some where "cooling off". Probably some place a bit local. But, maybe not. I got my motorcycle stolen. Dudes pulled in with a truck, just took 10 seconds throwing it in the back of the truck. They parked the trucks off near a housing construction site to cool down. Some bloke saw them, thought it was suspicious 1/

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

and called the cops. The trucks were stolen way across town, then driven to other side of town to nab a few motorcycles then go park some place. Their goal was to get it outside of the town's jurisdiction it was stolen in to try to make it harder to spot. It can be super difficult to get a stolen vehicle back. I think I just got super lucky. Get a police statement, and present that to the doc. Maybe they'll reconsider refilling the prescription./

Sorry I couldn't help it. I had to download that car. I didn't know it would take your away. Sorry fam.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel your pain. They tried to steal my car and destroyed it in the process. I don't know what I would do if they actually managed to steal it. I hope things get better for you soon.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Sorry to hear that friend. You'll get through this

2 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

Thank u friend. Means a lot

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Call the tow companies around you. It may have been ditched and towed from private property, like an apartment, and the impound yard doesn't know it's hot, and it can sit for months.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What make model and year is it? It might have built in tracker like onstar or toyota safety connect where you can call the dealership and have them enable it for you.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it were me, I'd call any of your brand's dealership's parts dept, give them the VIN and ask if it has the brand's version of onstar. If it does, ask if it is still operational since the 3g phaseout killed the function in a lot of cars recently.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It doesn’t it was a genesis coupe especially, so all the gps and frufru stuff left out. It is, again, a really shit situation

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How did they bypass the immobiliser?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hyundai in the USA was a bastard and didn’t use them for like..a decade..

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh right, wow. In Australia, immobilisers have been required by law in every car since 2001.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everything in the US is a scam. You pay into everything so much then when you finally need help, they blame it on you. That’s America for you. Land of the scammed

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Exactly. I can't believe THIS is what they tried to wipe out my people to build. A giant fucking pyramid scheme with a national anthem.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I read it as "car wash stolen" and was wondering how someone could steal a whole goddamn building

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"The Club" actually makes it easier for someone to steal your car, by providing one of the tools the thief would normally need to bring along. Don't use it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Post it on a stolen car Fb page for your area. I just found someone’s stolen car for them via “PNW Stolen Cars”, car was retrieved, criminals were arrested

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I tried that but they have it moderated and thr moderator hasn’t allowed the post to go through

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@op I've had my car stolen. As others have said, absolutely file a police report -- even if they're horrible and they'll never do anything to help recover it or do anything about the people that stole it, it's still worthwhile in the event you ever need a record. In my case, it turned up two weeks later abandoned in a suburb ten miles away. The report was how the cops there located me to return it. Be vigilant. You're the victim. Don't let anyone else say otherwise.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

First thing I did. But I have this feeling that they are probably not actively looking for it. More in line of “if we come across it”

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're absolutely correct. They weren't looking in my case either. Blew off the remote suggestion of it. Told me that nearby drug dealers sometimes steal old cars as their "weekly rental" so they can ditch it and run and it can't be traced to them. But, when it turned up abandoned, the report at least meant it got returned to me, instead of junked or auctioned. The cop was probably right. They ripped out the stereo (which didn't work anyway) but that aside it had a full tank and was spotless.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bought a Tile Sticker, it's one of those gps tracker thingies like you put on your keys, but this one was like a small button that you can stick to things and I stuck it in my car somewhere hidden. If my car ever gets stolen I can track it from my phone

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

After having my truck stolen, I now have two gps trackers in my replacement vehicle and I’m working on putting in a kill switch. If I can, the next vehicle I get will be a manual.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And if you can't remember where you parked!

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Exactly!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am sorry this happened. If you have renters or homeowners they should cover any personal property that was in the vehicle. Subject to deductible. I know it sounds dumb but car insurance is just for the car. I hope you receive better news soon! Controlled substance restrictions are a pain but you might be able to get more by asking for a higher dosage. I know I’ve been able to get new script within 30 days that way!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yes this. Talk to your doctor because they have got to figure out a way to work around that. Talk to someone higher up at the office or hospital if you have to. Cuz that's not okay. I'm so sorry.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I work in insurance and have found some loopholes with life over the years lol. Docs can’t give new script for lower but can for higher dose.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Then just go back down next month

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also comprehensive auto coverage covers theft

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also for recovery while coming off adhd meds. Grab some new mood from onnnit available at Walmart now. 2 at night and keep your seasoning levels up and also helps my adhd med dose stay working well. Much love

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Serotonin levels not seasoning. Wtf autocorrect lol

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@op fill out a police report, list the meds as being stolen along with the car, take the report to the doctor and get the meds refilled. You need to be at your best.

2 years ago | Likes 427 Dislikes 1

You can also get a controlled substance replacement once a year without (or minimal) legal issues. I lost ½ month of Suboxone once.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It doesn't matter in many cases. I go to a pain management clinic and they specifically have a sign saying they won't replace controlled substances even if they're stolen, even with a police report.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It’s really at the discretion of the physician

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The US can't refill them by law until their due date (however many days they prescribed it for with the script). We ran into this when our house burned down.
What you can do is visit an urgent care for the pain or whatever it is and have them get a new script, if it's through a pain clinic then have to call them. You'll have to tell them it's unbearable.

2 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 4

Pharmacist here. This is incorrect. A police statement or even a doctor written a medical override and a reasoning is sufficient. We can then call your insurance and request a lost or stolen override for you.

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

My ex had his car broken into and his pain meds stolen. He had it noted on the police report. He was able to get a script for the number of pills that were stolen until his normal refill would have been due. Doc has to cover his butt with the DEA. Insurance refused to cover it, fuckers that they are, but we made it work paying cash.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

You're assuming they were pain meds. I had a bottle of Adderall stolen, and the cops (in California) didn't give a shit. They were downright pissy about filing a police report, and I had a new prescription waiting at the desk of my provider that same day (before the police report was filed).

2 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

Yeah, go to urgent care, make an appointment, bring the police report if you have it. Ration whatever pills you have on you if you have any until you can get more meds. If you won't have meds before you run out, pick days where you can afford to be in a med - less state and go from there.

I've lost my Clonazepam and gabapentin before

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Only users lose drugs

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 11

People who don't use (take) drugs, obviously don't lose them. FAIL at being mean and condescending. If sarcasm, bigger Fail.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My husband has left his ADHD meds in my car before, they are a controlled substance and calling him or anyone else like him a user like this is incredibly short-sighted and hurtful

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

^This. If you're in Canada, they *should* once you have a police report # listing them as amongst the lost goods.

2 years ago | Likes 122 Dislikes 0

I'm worried op may get some crap for keeping a controlled medication in the vehicle. It could be considered not secure if you're not with it. depends on the level of control on the substance, keeping in a car is never a good idea regardless.

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Usually your perscribed medicine is OK to have on person, and people can 'forget' and leave it in vehicle, but I guess it depends on the law in your area.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

On person is fine. This is about leaving in the vehicle unattended. Forgetting is an excuse, but it's a terrible excuse. "Oops I forgot my meds on the kitchen table and the kids ate some." not a good excuse.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Of course- just seems like it should depend on context re- the refil. If you lose your meds due to theft and its the only replacement on file that they should get at least one pass.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not being able to fill my adhd meds during the recent shortage made me so worried about losing my job. Not being able to replace your meds while dealing with an extremely stressful life situation is a nightmare. Take it one step at a time and be kind to yourself @op.

2 years ago | Likes 157 Dislikes 1

That’s happened to me and the idea that I can’t operate without corporate drugs scares the shit out of me at this point.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The shortage is still happening. I found out today that no pharmacy in my town has any of my meds. I've got 1 pill left. I'm saving it for my job interview on Monday. :(

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I used to take xr but IR generics are actually pretty plentiful. Just a pain in the ass to remember to take

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same meds too. going to be a rough time, but I just have to get it out there so I dont lose my mind. I am expected to be stoic and function as if nothing happened, but I honestly would not wish this on anyone.

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

That's terrible, my husband has ADHD and his psychiatrist left without any warning so he was weeks without his meds trying desperately to get more, sending virtual hugs to you

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm so paranoid about this I keep my meds at home or on me. I had a coworker steal all my ADHD meds when I worked as a contractor at Raytheon, and then I got fired because I couldn't complete any work.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you’re in the US, ADA standards state that ‘reasonable accommodations’ must be made for a recognized disability. ADHD counts. If you are worried at all that you might lose your job, feel free to message me and I’ll give you any info I can. Otherwise, caffeinate! And make lists if you find you’re losing focus on work priorities. I’m cheering for you! It’s gonna suck for a minute, but you got this and will come out stronger in the end! Hang in there!

Notifying HR and getting that paperwork filed was strangely the first line of business in my mind. Thank you for the guidance, it means a lot

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Personally, I notified my direct mangers first. I explained the situation, let them know it was temporary (but I didn’t fully know a timeline it would resolved in) and that I appreciated their understanding. I hate to say it, but the stereotype of HR looking out for the company first is often true. That doesn’t mean you don’t still have a reasonable ask (and if they give pushback you should know your rights), but having backup from people you work with if HR gives you a hard time time is helpful

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We were reduced from a team of 9 to a team of 3 and I am the one who gets fancy with the spices. My boss, his boss, and the CIO were all pretty understanding when I asked them to have a bit more relaxed expectations for the next month. So rather than a 7 day task being done in 2 hours, maybe 2 days.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would look into talking to a different doctor to see if they could help you get a refill. I don’t think the doctor you’re seeing is a very good doctor if they are not willing to help you especially if you have a good history of being reliable with taking your meds as prescribed. My son takes ADHD meds and there was a time awhile back they got left at his Nanas house who lives a couple hours away and I wasn’t going to have time to get them because before he went back to school and his doctor…

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Isn’t*

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

was very understanding of the situation and helped us. Because she understands that it’s not his fault and that it’s better he is consistent with his meds especially when he has to go to school. It’s worth a shot to try. I’m so sorry what’s happening to you.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It’s not always about how understanding the doctor is. They can literally lose their license for for making exceptions like this. It’s not right, but it’s reality.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

And as I understand it the rules have really been tightened up in recent years in a misguided attempt to curb the number of people using ADHD meds recreationally. Just because it was possible a few years ago doesn't mean it's possible now.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

When trying to get ADHD meds, I get treated like a drug seeking criminal at every new pharmacy, and half the time when I switch doctors.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I’m treated that way for 3-6 months when seeing a new doctor. It’s ridiculous, but technically what they are told to do for their job. Once I pass that timeline, my doctors have always treated like a human. I always dread finding a new doctor though.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s awful:( I know how that feels. I’m in recovery and I got on a Suboxone prescription from my doctor. I had already been going to a methadone clinic for about a year but I hated going there and dealing with all of that. My doctor was amazing helping me get a Suboxone prescription and but trying to find a pharmacy was a nightmare. Some chain places straight turned me away. I was able to find a small mom and pop type pharmacy and finally they treated me with respect and decency and made…

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

getting my prescription so easy. I even stayed with that pharmacy when I moved the next town over because their service was worth it to me. I’m not on Suboxone anymore but my son is on a low dose methylphenidate and they always make sure to let me know in advance if there may be a shortage, or if they can’t get the full amount for the month they give me what they have and then call me when they can fill the rest. I just appreciate them so much.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ugh. I need to start a prescription. So hard to find a provider and then I’m afraid of shortages.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don’t let shortages stop you from finding the correct med. Finding the right medicine is hard enough, but if you can find it, THEN you can start thinking about whether it will be a challenge to get refills. I know anxiety about med availability can be overwhelming, but trust me, find the meds that work for you. Then figure out how to fill that prescription consistently.
