Honestly, white Christians are the group with the most power in the nation by far. They make up the majority of the elected government - and we've had exactly one president who wasn't white, and exactly one who wasn't Protestant Christian, and both of them caused immense conservative backlash. (People actually suggested Kennedy was going to hand over control of the nation to the Pope because he was Catholic.) If you're not at least proclaiming loyalty to some church, say goodbye to your chances.

Western people look at violent religio-cultural customs like the Aztec sacrifices and tut-tut at how excessive and barbaric it all was, and it never occurs to them that their own religion wasn't much different throughout history. Labeling the victims witches or heretics doesn't change the fact that these were all involuntary, gruesome human sacrifices.
