Saw this making its rounds here with some real loser titles and misinformation. Thought I'd post what I had and clear it up. Man had nothing to do with the home owners and (obviously) was suffering severe mental issues. He said he could hear people inside the house screaming so he approached. He even made his way into the house
The owner of the home was communicating through ring and was already racing home. He popped the intruder in the head with a shovel and de escalated the situation until police arrived and took the invader away
TrentonTye
I can in fact verify that is the sound of an aluminum shovel striking a person. Dont ask how I know the sound of that sweet sweet TWANG!

Thank you for posting the context

"Made his way into the house" ... broke in... he is lucky the guy wasn't home yet (or so it seems). After his behavior and threats outside, if he then broke into the house, there wouldn't be much room for descalation, especially if kids were home. That could have been a lot worse.

Glad this was handled without any loss of life. Not going to lie if I was in this man's situation I most likely would have shot the intruder.

Looks/sounds like PTSD

Ah, the owner wasn't home that adds quite a lot of context. And yes the shovel ending is expected.
Quizz25S
Good for the home owner. I know probably 50% of the population would've shot him on sight.

Note to others: do not "race home" to "pop' someone in the head with a shovel unless someone helpless is there. This isn't looney toons, and that can kill or damage them severely. Civil suits are a thing
cdlong
That shovel is far less harmful than a regular spade. It's light, short, and there's so much air resistance, you can't really swing it with any speed or momentum.
TheMurderousCricket
I'm totally amazed how the owner handled this situation with such resilience and self-control, avoiding any (serious) bodily harm and life loss...
If I were in his place, I'd probably just shit myself and cower in the backyard or would outright attack and draw the soul out of the intruder - not because of aggression but out of utter horror of encountering such an uncontrollable mess of a human being.
Well handled... Gee, that's one crazy shit... Truly...

Pepper spray. Very, >very< effective. Non-lethal in case of misunderstanding or like someone you don't want to hurt.
Comet260
Pepper spray doesn't work on people out of their mind.

I'm 53. What is up with black trench coats? They were popular with wanna-be badasses in 1989 for crying out loud. Guys carried butterfly knives and num-chuks around in the pockets and couldn't use either.
m6514309
It's not just the trench coat- the anime merch (shirt in this case) and sandals complete the look.
circlebreaker
I still see plenty of businesspeople wearing them alongside the high end peacoats. I thought that trenchies only got that reputation because of the Matrix/Columbine thing, they always make me think of Cold War spies and Inspector Gadget (please excuse the pulled pork spy, I accidentally saved over the original apparently).
TKpotato
I am curious about the pulled pork spy. Who does he work for? What is his mission?
circlebreaker
He only responded to a single very specific comment years ago, then went into retirement in upstate NY, and opened a nice little chip wagon.

All the way back to old westerns. Before the "Matrix trench coat" it was the "Cowboy leather duster", they just weren't exactly easy for most people to get their hands on.

I mean, this home owner's Batman cape is right there on the floor, so it checks out, I guess. Jokes aside, you should not approach a psychotic person. He thinks he is saving someone in captivity, and he may carry a knife. The situation could escalate really quick.

Well there are context clues that show that he didn't say anything racist but he did ask about the guys daughter and I believe he mentioned screaming. Doesn't prove he is or isn't racist but the video quite clearly shows a mentally unstable individual

I tend to agree, but it was either that or instagram. The Farifield police don't post their press releases elsewhere.

Normally I would agree, but when it's a post from the verified account of the police department that made the arrest, I think it probably stands.
Colbar68
I watched the video. He initially wanted to see the man's daughter. He lives next door. Feel sorry for people this deep in mental illness.
Jamesstin
Neighbor of mine discovered I was queer.Literally the next day she is banging on the door making accusations that I have cameras on top of my house and within a vent. She believed a transwoman that likes men is spying into her restroom in order to record her in the nude. What she was seeing is that our attic has a vent with a temperature activated fan so randomly that vent will open and close. Shed see this occur at night and it evidently meant I was in the attic jerking off to her from 100’ away

Yep. They're alcoholics too. The husband flips me off every time he sees me and it's been a year. Wish I could own firearm

Cps picked me up on a Friday night and instead of placing me somewhere, I was taken to a crisis center and apparently that is an involuntary hold. Happened when I was 12/13
Comet260
Jesus. There is so much untreated mental illness and I'm sorry you had to put up with that.
Jamesstin
What really upset me is how they found out I was gay. Her brother is absolutely a closeted older gay man. Like DEEPLY in closeted. we were always friendly but he was a drinker/addict and later I discovered he has a pretty extensive criminal record and just repeatedly relapses. Well several times I saw his phone screen while chatting and I saw that he had Grindr on his phone. Dude was drunk as shit and had a rave pacifier in his mouth and all this. Lmao so I ask him about it. Later he tells me 1/
Jamesstin
That he is bi or whatever but nobody knows. Dudes a grandparent, and his whole family are racist homophobic Christians. We had talked about addiction in the past because I've dealt with it but I told him that i only stopped having issues with addiction once I accepted the genuine me, that I like men, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if his issues are similar but anyhow, it was a day or two when his sister came banging on our door with the accusations so he definitely told her about me being queer.2/
Jamesstin
What's wild is that I actually spoke with the lady once recently and she told me that she thought her brother was gay. So I told her the same damn thing. Her family not being accepting and his inability to be his genuine self is likely the biggest factor for why he has had a difficult life with crime and addiction, and she acknowledged that I was probably right. Idk if it changed anything but I did notice that she has a little bike lawn decoration out front now that has rainbow spokes? Maybe 3

I've thought about buying a shotgun and keeping it loaded with rock salt.
I WAS completely anti-gun, but salt is a good de-icing agent. ;)
IDontKnowWhatToDoAnymoreAndImTired
That's actually a bad idea. Discharging a firearm is always considered "lethal force" no matter what it's loaded with. Using nonlethal rounds, if you ever actually had to shoot someone, could be considered by a DA as evidence that you were not actually in fear of your life, which is the usual standard for self defense.
xantous4201
Shame that we live in a "kill them because 1 story is better than 2" kind of justice system. Leaving them alive can actually get you in trouble even though they were the instigator.
rezexelon
This.... I'll help train a lot of first time shooters and one of the things that I have to say is that there is no "shoot to injure". The way the "justice" system is setup, if you whip that gun out it better be with lethal intent or it can come right back at you.
EnderKing567
So you're saying every time a cop fired on rioters in the past with rubbers. By law it's intent to kill?
TacticalSpoon
Lets just say that the cops no longer call that equipment "nonlethal" and instead use the term "less lethal".
Jimthebutler
Man handled the situation perfectly ( obviously the homeowner, not the lunatic)

as apparently no one was home the perfect handling would have been to wait for the cops to do their fucken job and not escalate the situation themselves...wild that the owner arrived home before the cops anyways...fucken shitshow...
selfishsarah
cops kill people with mental illness on the regular.
RecurringNightmare
yeah but hitting people with mental illness on the head with a shovel can also kill them on the regular...puts yourself in danger and makes you potentially liable...
Comet260
The homeowner's WIFE was home, that's why he raced to the house and grabbed Mr. shovel.
RecurringNightmare
okay, that changes things a bit, but still, alert the wife so she can flee the scene or barricade herself and then let the cops do their jobs...dont wanna know how many traffic laws the dude broke on his way home and how many almost-accidents he had...
Comet260
She was barricaded in another room.
xmorpheus42
Can we not insult someone for a mental break? There is probably a dozen nicer things you could have called him.
THUB
Lunatic is a legitimate, ancient descriptor. And frankly perfectly accurate here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunatic
xmorpheus42
You really wanna go there? Saying that a word is fine cause of its historical meaning? Shall we bring back the N word then as it’s only describing the color of one’s skin?
A word may just be a word but the usage of its intent speaks on the behalf of its user just as much as the person it’s referring to. You used a word that downplays mental illness as a thing that makes someone an animal who howls at the moon for no reason. You know its history. Don’t twist your words.
Rosenaa
Wikipedia are a boatfull of shit. Dond't use words to label someone ! - Not Ever !!
CriminallyMysophobic
Right? I could never. That man clearly coild have destroyed that intruder and had every right to but he chose a road I could never blaze in the situation

The road of bashing a guy in the head with a shovel?
CriminallyMysophobic
The road of jot taking too far and killing or maiming. Dude hit hom because he was aggressive and then walked him out once he was less so.
gronzilla
Wait. There are people who think "destroying an intruder" is an easier choice? In any circumstance?
CriminallyMysophobic
Well, we have people who can't read for sure.
Nephytis
If your safety..the safety of your family...etc.. Wouldn't even think about it. Assume most people with this response are non American... Some of us live in places where shooting someone trespassing on your property its fully within your rights (not that I agree with it).
OverwhelmingSurplusOfDiggity
You may be able to justify it, but even so there’s “I could justify it while typing on my phone” and then there’s “I will aim a gun at a person and pull the trigger until they are dead”.
I agree btw; ethically speaking self defense feels 100% reasonable to me.
OverwhelmingSurplusOfDiggity
You got downvoted by someone who thinks killing a living human is the same as playing Call of Duty.
If the weirdo isn’t threatening your life, it should be hard to justify beating them to death or shooting them. If you feel differently, something is wrong with you.
SmergBlaerghl
I'm very impressed with the homeowner. Glad he didn't, as so many Americans seem to gleefully do in situations like this, take it as an opportunity to legally murder someone.
wadatahmydamie
The vast majority of handgun owners buy one so they can secretly fantasize about shooting a stranger or defending someone or whatever, but most people aren’t internally dead sociopaths and wouldn’t even know which end of the gun to point at someone in the moment.
theshinobi23
Someone breaks into my home, screaming about how he's gonna kill me and asking where my daughter is...idk if he's carrying a weapon in that coat or might have a gun tucked into the back of his pants, or anything about him...my reaction would be to pull out the shotgun and hope he doesn't have a weapon and backs down at the sight of it. I seriously do not want to actually use it, but if I honestly think it's kill or be killed, I fear I might. There are many here who dream of this, but I fear it.
StillNotYouTube
If you were already home, sure. But what if you see someone break into your house on your cameras while you are away, which was the case here. I think you're inviting legal trouble if you go to confront this person, even if it's your own home.
wadatahmydamie
You wouldn’t be able to pull the trigger by the time they reach you. I don’t mean that as a bad thing, most people don’t have the complete lack of empathy it requires to pull the trigger on a stranger.
theshinobi23
I honestly don't know how I'd react in the moment, since I've never been in that type of situation and I haven't trained extensively for it to the point of muscle memory. I really do hope that if I ever am in that type of situation, it deescalates easily, because I do not want to kill and also don't want to be killed. Idek if I'd have the wherewithal to load the shotgun before coming out to use it as a deterrent. Fear is a hell of a drug.
Felberin
"Idk if he's carrying a weapon", had he had a weapon, it would have been out and about being flailed wildly, while he's threathening the Ring cam and door. Man clearly isn't in mindset to conceal the weapon for last minute plot twist. So, homeowner in question could be pretty confident there isn't weapon in this situation. That being said, I probably would not have engaged myself and instead waited for cops to come by and probably shoot the agitated man driving himself further in frenzy,so props
Emjayen
You know what you could also do is simply run away? Why do Americans seem hell-bent on getting into shoot-outs as if they're in a fucking John Wayne film.
The outcome is either you die or you murder someone, and that's really the best case because what often happens in these peabrained scenarios is innocent bystander casualities.
The reality is most people don't want to kill others; someone mugging you with a gun just wants to threaten, but if you pull a gun now the situation is volatile.
