This makes my back hurt

Millennials hell! I had to check it out. As a late Gen Xer this was for the Upper Class, we couldn't afford this, never saw it.

The hockey puck mouse those things shipped with made me feel old when they were brand new...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As much as the mouse sucked, the keyboard was great. I still use mine.

I saw a boxed copy of Windows 95 on display in the Edo Tokyo museum in Asakusa. I feel the pain.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Seems fair. I totally vote for having each generation of tech in some form of museum. Plus, transparent tech is rad and should return.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It reminds me of the time my family went to the Smithsonian and saw the exact camera my dad was currently holding in one of the exhibits

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

n it has a very Demolition Man feel to it

I used to sell those when I was in college. Time to go put some Bengay on my shoulders.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This makes me rationally angry.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

G4.. I used to use one of those.. fuck

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When I was 10 I peaked my "girlfriends" dad had a room of 4 of these, and we'd play diabolo 2 was nice

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Man i remember seeing these at my dad's job.

same

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s not even that old man. I know time has passed but fuck it’s what 20 years old?…. Shit

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I work in a museum. It is legitimately hard to ‘actively collect’ modern material culture because people don’t think it’s significant. But it will be, and then we won’t have it.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My mom saved everything including software boxes and even manuals. Worthless things that no one keeps which is exactly what I love about it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I miss playing the OG Marathon in my schools computer lab after school on those

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The files are in the computer! It’s so simple!

Got one upstairs.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those things were only good for showing off to guests anyway. If you wanted to run any actual software, you had to boot up a PC

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Truth!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It's Iowa, so it's a Museum of the Future.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

There are a lot of opportunities to make fun of Iowa (especially with the current idiots in charge) but their tech ain't it

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A few weeks ago I read an article about Zoomers beginning to feel old because they don’t understand “Gen-Alpha” memes about people popping out of toilets(?), “skibidi toilet.” The realization that Gen-Z aren’t the kids anymore really drove my Millennial age home for me, and born in ‘84 I barely even qualify. T_T

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those stupid hockey puck mice were the worst.

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

You just brought back a memory I was sure I had forgotten!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. Goddamnit fuck those idiotic things.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Their whole concept of single button mice was horrible, they still kept it up when everyone else had 3 button scroll mice.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's apple, they stand for wanna be high end redesigns of things that don't need a redesign. Gotta lie to the customer somehow about being innovative pioneers while not being innovative at all. Luckily EU slapped them hard and told them to sit the fuck down and install USB C ports.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I have one, the highest it can run is OSX 10.4 Tiger

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Time to take that ibuprofen for your back pains, if you relate.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

this is what I learned on in high school. Brand new when I was a junior.

They still had these in my RadioShack in the Navy when I was in, largely unused but there was a time when they had a dozen running 24x7

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

we took typing courses on these horrible little portable keyboards (not my pic but same model)

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure if that's a typewriter or a teletype machine.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Same

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So . . .what was Jesus like, you know, in person?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It looks loud

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

the punch tape reader on the left of that thing sounds like a machine gun: https://youtu.be/qv5b1Xowxdk?si=SoaVea88c78XKx_g&t=248

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Fascinating video. Hard to believe the high tech things we use now will some day be looked at the same way we look at that machine

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would rather die than watch that again tbh

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I could fall asleep to that clip on loop

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It doesn't hit so bad, they were obsolete pretty much before anyone saw one.

2 years ago | Likes 180 Dislikes 6

Lol a couple of US Senate offices had them as well

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"obsolete pretty"...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The iMac G3 came out in 1998, the iMac G4 flat panel didn’t come out until 2001…

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

G4 Cube is my Apple nostalgia of choice

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The good ol’ iLamp!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

My family had an Apple 2c for my entire childhood. We had some pretty cool games for it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not really - the original G3 ones were very fast compared to the Intel machines at the time. The G4 really fell behind though.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

The Power Mac G5 however was a beast

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Imac G3? I know the Powermac G3 was a monster but the Imac never seemed that fast.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The G3 CPU was 2-3 times faster than the Pentium 2 clock for clock. The PowerMac ofc was even more powerful, but the iMac was still a very fast computer at the time. As I said though, by the time the G4 rolled around, the Pentium 3 was very respectable in terms of performance per clock, and scaled much much better than it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

try telling that to every middle school computer lab across the US

2 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 1

They still had a few in a couple computer labs at University of Arizona circa 2013. They were awful.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah brah, when I was in middle school we were playing DOS games in computer lab. In high school somehow our Computer Maintenance classroom got fifteen PCs with GeForce 2s in them. Obsolete at the time, but amazing for school PCs.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Surely you can't be implying that we would make poor investment decisions for our education system...

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well government IT procurement processes are not always the most logical.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

My middle school from 97 to 00 and high school to 04 never had anything that nice

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Being subjected to those plastic pieces of shit through elementary and middle school is a big reason why I will never buy an Apple computer. The OS was stupid and illogical (still is), they were unstable and prone to crashing (which would cause you to lose everything), and files were often incompatible with Windows computers. Ugh.

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 4

And remember the fucking mouse?

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Fuck kind of middle school had iMacs? Our district had kids using floppy discs until 2010.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The same ones installing new Apple ][ in 1988 and then replacing them with equally out of date macs in 1996?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Mmmm. Mouse practice

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sounds about right... lol

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree with @TotallyNotVillain. Those things being in EVERY single computer lab when I was in middle and high school is what made me hate Apple. In retrospect, the hockey puck mouse is charmingly cute, but what asshole decided that was a usable, functional idea? And with a 12-inch cord, too! I don't care that it plugged into the keyboard, it's still too goddamn short!

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I have a steelseries keyboard that was a USB hub and two ports built in, it still needs 2 USB ports on the machine it's plugged into. You still want the keyboard to have a seperate connector independant of a built in USB hub.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hot take, though: keyboards with USB ports are a good idea and I'm baffled why no one else has done it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I don't disagree. It's a pretty boss feature.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty much every Kerouac keyboard I've owned for the past ten years has had that feature. It's pretty universal.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are plenty of such devises. Both my brothers have gaming keyboards that are wireless yet with their own USB ports.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What model?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yeah, just because you operate in a circle where people haven't spent money on the feature does not mean they aren't available at every single electronics store; I've been using a cheap Logitech keyboard with 2 USB ports for over a decade.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I miss the days of translucent neon plastic. We should make more things out of that.

2 years ago | Likes 544 Dislikes 2

Especially Nintendoes.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My translucent-purple Gameboy Color still works!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 82 Dislikes 1

Sent this to a friend, "Atomic purple was pretty badass tho"

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Your cellphone would be a pinky sized PCB and all battery. Not very fun like an old analogue telephone.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hell I had a translucent GameBoy Color. I remember looking at the internal circuitry and all the chips and thinking, "wow, I can get into this." Took a bunch of tech electives in high school, got a Comp Engineering degree, and now I'm doing the enlightening job of...checking transformer serial numbers and yelling at my techs to lock the damn roadside cabinets.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only a couple more years and you'll be saying "I miss days.".

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean they arent generally colored, but all the electronics in prisons are clear.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They can make my hip replacement out of it so you can watch it work!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Someone suggested car bodies, but I feel it's impractical. Any scuff, scratch, stain, whatever, inside and out... more a for-show car. And before anyone makes the assumption that I'm a terrible driver because I'm worried about scuffs and scratches on a nice car, other people exist and also drive.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Coffins would be cool. Our microplastics in our gut could return to its maker.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It'll come back eventually.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey, in the Matrix, they did say that 1999 was the peak of human civilization right? I'm starting to believe it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ayn Odin 2, coming out soon, has two different translucent plastic shell options. A neat purple and a blue I want way more than I should.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I miss it also. My first phone was a Nokia and I went to a booth in the mall that sold phone stuff and got a neon lemon colored phone cover and a set of new buttons. Modern phones haven't got anything on customization.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like I'm the only one who hates the see through plastic stuff on electronics from the 2000s. It looks hideous on everything.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You're not alone, see-through plastic looks very cheap.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

>:(

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can mod your steamdeck with it now! So at least someone out there cares as much as us about it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Man just reading you say that brought back memories

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mad Cat controllers

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Translucent colored plastics are my primary material of choice when 3d printing parts. Partly because it's fun, but mostly because it's cheap.

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

So you could 3D print a computer? Can it run Doom?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Bitch please, the damn 3d printer could run doom.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I'm curious, why is it cheap?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Coincidence. It's what the cheap brands are offering at the minute.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ah, got it. I really couldn't think of any reason why it might be. Thanks!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you remember the clear plastic phones with all the brightly-colored components in them? I always wanted one of those.

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Buy one then. They are still about on ebay.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes! Swatch phone! My sister and I had one. The bottom part was also a second receiver, so we could both talk to our friend (or a boy!!!) at the same time. Fun stuff.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I know the exact phone. I had one found at a garage sale, worked great, but haven’t had a landline in years now. No clue where the phone went

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I miss them too, I loved being able to see the insides of my electronics.

2 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 0

That's what the glass panel rgb pc crowd is all about and yet they get so much hate sometimes

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Gameboy color

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can probably order a clear case online I know they atleast have them for Steam Deck and Switch I don't know for certain but they probably have them for every console.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're 3rd party but they still exist. There's even such casing for modern stuff like the Nintendo switch

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

they make electronics with clear plastic cases, for prisoners to buy. but yea, in the 90s i had a radio/cassette player with a clear case.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Aren't we all prisoners in this hellscape we call society.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That N64 controller. You know the one.

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

I got one the exact same color as the pictured computer in my closet.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mmmmmmmm atomic purple.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

That's pretty much the only thing with translucent materials these days. Gamepads and retro handheld emulation... Well not counting prison electronics.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Puberty in the 90s was equal parts weird and wild
