I got a warm fuzzy feeling from other commenters also displeased with that shitty use of a bearded axe :3

Up-voting for your username.

At first I thought the first image was a sword wedged in a watermelon.

"It will KEEEL" - Forged in Fire. One of my favorite shows on TV.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Ah, all the weapon 'experts' are crawling out of the wood work.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Nah, just people exposed to proper use.

@op i watch this show with my dad. he always says "EET WHEEL KEEL"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Am I drunk or did the guy in #2 come relatively close to taking the rebound to the face?

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

You are drunk. It definitely looks that way at a glance but really watching it you see he has control.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I saw that too.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Nah, it looked like he had pretty good control of it. And I think the angle made it look closer than it really was.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Agreed

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some of these just don't cut it.

I love watching this show.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I happened to be watching the show when I saw this post. "Forged in Fire" for those who haven't experienced this TV gem.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I miss deadliest warrior :(

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

+1 But only the first few seasons

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It always bugged me how it was 20 minutes of cool weapon facts/knowledge and 40 minutes of filler and recaps

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah but for those 20 minutes it was totally worth it! Get that slitherin shit fired up to fuck saaaan

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh fuck yeah! I'd love to know how many pigs they destroyed throughout all the seasons

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pigs and pounds of ballistic dummy's. Bound to be a healthy amount!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait. Is #4 Ilya from Man at Arms Reforged?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, he's in season two of forged in fire, and is awesome

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ilya's usually pretty awesome, yeah. I might need to watch season 2 of Forged in Fire

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 226 Dislikes 5

It's becoming a lost art. I am pretty sure, however, that dad could manage #1 without the fancy scope and gun vise... at 25 yards.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

He split a bullet on a sword.. it's not that easy

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I know, I saw dad split a playing card at that range.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Gimli would approve!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same goes for katana it hurts me to see the guy hack like that

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

None of those is a katana, unless you mean the one getting shot at. What are you talking about?

Is this the part where all the SCA dorks show up and talk shit about the actual master blacksmiths?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

it's one thing to know how to make a weapon...it's another thing to know how to USE the weapon to it's full potential.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

So, yes? :)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

not sure. I'm not into SCA, just a combat vet.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Forged in Fire is an insult to real knifemakers and blacksmiths everywhere. The show has its moments but as a whole it's shit.

10 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 4

Really? I thought it was better than that.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So much misinformation spread by reality shows like this. They care not for accuracy or facts, only ratings.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The info rarely clashed with what I have read about forging mostly. But i have to ask what are some of the big red flags? so i can learn!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good thing i only watch it for the sexy bearded men

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is really too bad, because here in the US we have Arms & Armor out of Minnesota making exceptional weapons for years.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Exactly. There are a lot of great European weaponsmiths as well, and they're all being sidelined by History Channel garbage.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Reality tv. It's not renowned for the high quality...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now you know how we feel about all those gunsmith shows.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I never looked at it like that before. I now understand your pain.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

... But I also know people who could manage #1 at 10 yards without vise or scope, easy.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's allright, man. I only know the surface details about knives, but I know a good one won't be slapped together in 5 hours on reality TV.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Places that forge not so great or not so practical weapons I can forgive/ignore, but these guys are about sensationalism with no substance

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Just like Deadliest Warrior.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's American TV for you. Look at the US version of Kitchen Nightmares next to the UK version.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Being interested in smithing (with no experience), could you cite some examples? I want to know what they are doing wrong so I don't do it.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So much information I don't have enough space here. Pm me a question and we'll talk about it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#2 and #3 are either using really blunt tools or they're pathetic. Looking at their technique I'd go with the latter.

10 years ago | Likes 121 Dislikes 8

That's not how you use that sort of sword - you stab with it, and you slice with it, you don't hack with it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Clearly have no idea who Doug Marcaida is. To be fair its knives hes good with.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Doug Marcaida is not swinging the arming sword in #2, nor is he using proper technique in #3. His Kali technique is fantastic, though.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those had me wondering if they were trying to make blades not look as fantastic as they do in the movies.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Seeing that in#3 he is cutting towards himself I don't think they have great techniques. Seriously I've seen way too many ppl cut themselves

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#2 is an arming sword against thick beef bones. Arming swords are slicing weapons with not much weight towards the tip. They aren't 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Well why's it called that if it's not for taking off arms? Like a paring knife is for paring.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The term started being used when it became a secondary weapon so it literally means that it's for arming yourself if you lose your primary.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Designed to cut bone and its not surprising that it takes him a couple of swings. Arming swords are for doing damage to organs and flesh.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I'm more inclined to criticize the test itself as being poorly conceived.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Also what's with the gingers pussy facial expressions in #2! Probably thinks squashing a fly is senseless violence.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 9

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can't use that word. That's our word!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That was his sword that was getting "tested". He made it for the final challenge and was worried it would break

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

#2 is a light stabbing and slicing weapon doing a job of an axe. #3 those bones are fucking hard and the angle is a bit weird.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Any human bone would have gone to bits after the first strike. And I must repeat this: bones are fucking hard to cut.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why would you even wanna cut bones? You would leave yourself wide open for a counter attack while winding up for a bone crushing blow.

10 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

Maybe you're arm is caught in a rocky crevice miles away from help. You'd wanna cut bone then.. and quickly

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

+1

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't know. I combat your swings might actually look more like that in order to keep the attack fast and not lose grip of your weapon.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No, in combat you would be likely to be stabbing with a sword, or slicing, than chopping. Chopping is a big motion, leaves you vulnerable

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't speak for the axe, but even with that in mind their cuts with the katana are shit. It's a slicing weapon, not a chopping one. /1

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There should be a slight pull or push with each cut, similar to how you'd cut a turkey or thick block of cheese (bad example, but still). /2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The axe would have worked much better if they knew how to fucking swing it

10 years ago | Likes 624 Dislikes 14

Yea, he swings like a 2 year old would, put your fucking back into man....the fuck is he even holding the thing for

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Word.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I went back to rewatch it, and yeah, the way he's swinging has very little power behind it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

But it will kill!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right? You're not chopping logs you twit. Also aren't they on the wrong side of the ribs?

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Even if he was chopping logs that would be the wrong way to do it

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hey guys just want to point out a big part of using a weapon is retaining it. Swinging at would is very different than a person.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

Do you fail to retain your axe when swinging at would?

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Well if you watch the show you'll know that safety comes first. They use the same technique for both weapon so it's judge fairly.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was coming down to comment just this. Even a 10 year old who cuts firewood knows how to swing a damn axe.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Cue the armchair warriors.

10 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 12

Sword canes are great practice.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

More like literally anybody whose used a pickaxe or sledgehammer.....

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I've split several cords of wood in my day, and could easily put any reasonable axe through those ribs.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

For real his swing was stupid, and anyone who has handled a large tool knows that. You have to move your hand to generate any force.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

True but if you have ever done as much as knocked a stake in the ground you would know that that is a wrong way to use a large weapon.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Looks like he isn't proficient with Martial Weapons.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You guys do realize that this guy is a Martial art expert right?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 7

He's a blade specialist. He has a YouTube channel as well

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He didn't slide his lead hand at all like you would with a fully committed swing.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

he couldn't because the handle was to rounded for him to do that without the blade flipping from side to side.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In combat it doesn't make sense to fully commit to a swing anyways, if they Dodge you are far too vulnerable, first hack bits out of them

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's why one handed axes were far more common for war: no one really used huge barbarian / dwarf battle axes, that's a fantasy art thing.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the episode the guy mentions that the handle was too rounded so he couldn't keep his grip as it would twist on impact 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 0

They have the meat set up pretty high, too. He does a better job once the cuts get lower.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Which is why he kept his hands further apart instead of sliding the upper hand all the way down and swinging properly 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 0

Try getting a reservation at Dorsia now you fucking stupid bastard!

10 years ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 2

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

I don't even know what Dorsia is, but it doesn't change how many times I've swung an axe.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

Ha, classic

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a resteraunt in American Psycho, that has the reputation to be packed. Getting a reservation is a privilege at the place.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You wanna learn the first rule? You never open your mouth till you know what the shot is.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a reference to America Psycho. It was rather graphic in the book, less so in the movie.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Main character kills someone with an axe.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do you like Huey Lewis?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

And the news.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, they call these people "Experts" but I would say they are enthusiasts at most

10 years ago | Likes 232 Dislikes 6

honestly you don't need to be an expert or enthusiast to know how to swing an axe

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

HIs name's Doug Marcaida. He's good with knives, but that looks like about it.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

"I know everything about Japanese swords!!" *holds katana like a baseball bat* *head+desk*

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Junpei? Is that you?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I fear I do not get the reference

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Character from a game called Persona 3. He uses two-handed swords as weapons, but swings them like baseball bats.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

An "expert" is a 70-year-old who has been swinging one for a living since the age of 10.

10 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 6

That would be Ron Swanson

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

As with any other art, it takes roughly seven years under a competent instructor in the fence to acquire a minimum level of mastery.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

10,000 hour.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Someone who has spent their life chopping wood would have no idea how to competently swing an axe at a human who wants to kill them back.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There goes my dream of surviving the zombie apocalypse :<

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bullshit

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wood chopping is an entirely different motion. You don't need to worry about the wood stabbing you back if you don't recover fast enough.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Though there's a different technique between chopping wood and cutting trees and using it for attacking and wounding/killing someone

10 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

Although the 70 year old would be better at using the axe than an enthusiast.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

"Technique" XD Swing the axe, hit the target. Whatever their "technique" was, I have personally done more damage than they did, so it sucks.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 39

If you watch the episode-the grip slips due to construction.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

have you really, have you actually taken an axe to what I'm assuming a cows ribcage. You wouldn't lie to me, over the internet?
