I love the “play it out to its idiotic end” strategy. It works well on my dad who can never think past the first paragraph but thinks he is always correct and that he has a superpower. Sometimes it just takes a few follow up questions like “at what point does it stop?” Or “Who decides that?” are enough to stop him.
I also like the slight hyperbole method too. It’s kind of the same, but a little extra for emphasis.
